I have been looking at many pdf files from my hdd and reading about pdf
fonts. I've seen all kinds:

1) fonts not embedded but substituted (the smallest), (it seems that early
pdf used 13 base fonts, or core fonts, always available on readers and
never
embedded, plus 2 master fonts for substitution, one serif and one
sans-serif)
2) embedded subsets (only those characters present in the doc) (smaller),
and
3) whole font embedded, (maybe the actual and oversized behaviour).

After reading this, I think there will be a way to get light utf-8 pdf
files. TCPDF says (in the link you sent to me) that it's possible not to
embed just setting to false $embedded

(the following is copied from the web, it seems a bit aged)

If certain fonts are missing from the PDF file, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe
Reader will automatically try to emulate the missing font by using one of
the Multiple Master fonts that are built into these programs. This way, the
document will not be represented exactly as the designer wanted it to, but
at least the text won't reflow.

>From Acrobat 4.x onwards, if the licensing policy of a TrueType forbids the
font to be included in a file, Distiller 4 and later will respect this
restriction and will not embed the font.

There are 2 advantages to subsetting fonts:

- It reduces the size of a PDF file and can be handy if file size is really
crucial, for instance for PDF files that will be downloaded from the web.
- RIPs will always use a subsetted font, even if the full font is already
available on the RIP. This way text reflows caused by differences between
fonts can be avoided.
(I don't know what RIP means here, after a search I found Raster Image
Processor and Remote Imaging Protocol )

There are two disadvantages to subsetting fonts:

- If you want to edit text in Acrobat and the character you need is not
included in the subset, it cannot be used in the correction.
- Merging two files that contain a different subset of the same font can
lead to missing characters.

*******
If the above works (not to embed any font), it will be all about selecting
the best font for compatibility, screen/print quality and print/screen
server/client matching. The webERP's pdfs will be smaller than actual are.

Am I missing somethig?

regards,
javier
