This is the same text in Open Document Format

http://146.red-88-2-131.staticip.rima-tde.net/javier.odt

There are two options: install OOo ActiveX control to view it in the Browser
or to not install it and open or save the file with Write or Word.

This is the pdf to compare with

Hi Javier,

Should these be the same document? The second one gives me 3 blank
pages with just headers. Or is it me?

Hi Tim:
They are the same document, if you see the three pages with
no text, perhaps you are using Linux.
The blue stripe at top of pages is not a header, the matter is
that TCPDF made this example with blue background on text.
I didn't have time to see the issues with Linux apps. Maybe
they have no CID support. I saw this in Evince 0.6.0 for Linux
(the viewer I'm using) and PDFedit 0.3.2 for Linux (an editor
that only have used 5 minutes).

With Acrobat for Windows, the normal behaviour is that Acrobat
ask the user to install Japanese support.
(This is because the CID map is a Japanese one)
The Japanese support consists in the font and cmap.
With Acrobat this is just one click in a lifetime, but with other
readers this could be different. I only have tested with
Acrobat Standard 8 for Windows.

We may begin to test different clients. The following is the same
pdf with a Core Font. The 3 apps do right but as font is ANSI
it doesn't support Turkish and other languages (it shows ? bullets).

Hi Javier,

You are right I'm using Linux. I dont have a machine handy. What are
the file sizes that the two formats produce? Is that a fair test?

Hi Tim,

> Hi Javier,

Windows tests are done, it's time to Linux.

> What are the file sizes that the two formats produce?

The saved files are
odt = 12771 bytes in OOo 2.3.0 (Linux); 13496 in OOo v3.1.0 (Windows)
pdf = 29940 bytes in both Linux and Windows

> Is that a fair test?

Nope, pdf has TCPDF Logo, header, footer, blue background, etc. that
weights.
I was looking at characters only, fonts are from clients in both cases, .

Please try again, I took away Logo and Title and now pdf is

pdf = 6738 bytes and it has footer with page number and header line.

Despite the above,
pdf has lot of data like index, fields and it's an Autoedition file
(Pagemaker, Publisher, InDesign, etc.) it has info about how fonts must
be rendered, while odt is a word processor file, it has a little more than
the text.

Reports a more like tables; that should be tested.

Me to - I'm using linux I am using epdfview - I also have foxit installed.

I expected this to be a mine-field but WOW!!! I know why we never headed
down this route before. However, with your guidance and knowledge I am
still hopeful you will come up with a way the rest of the world can use
webERP...

Silly question - can fpdf produce pdf reports using CID fonts and not
embed them?

 >The need of a font not delivered with Acrobat has the
 >the disadvantage that it must be installed on client computers

Well if this turns out to be the solution we could provide a download
that would need to be installed on client machines. It's not as ideal as
we have things now but ....

Will such a font be open-source or are we into copyrights and licensing
problems etc?

Fantastic research and knowledge you have on this Javier....

Hi Phil,

> Me to - I'm using linux I am using epdfview - I also have foxit installed.

I use CentOS, SL and any member of the RHEL family, hence I tested
the pre-installed pdf apps like Evince and pdfedit; later, at time to select
another app to install I selected Adobe Reader first and found its behaviour
to be exactly the same that Acrobat Reader for Windows, very easy to
install both the main app and the CJK support. I like apps that have
versions
for Linux and Windows like Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.

Must I give a try to epdfview and foxit?

To write in many languages at the same time, i.e., to have a report with
many (all)
languages in it, it's something that goes one step beyond i18n; webERP is
i18n
compliant already except for some languages like Turkish that have some
issues.
(The worst is that pdf gives blank pages not the lack of its six characters)
TCPDF solves Turkish and maybe others, but we are going to the North Pole,
just because we are testing both things at the same time: Turkish and ...
how might we call it? global multi-language? or worse, global simultaneous
multi-language?

More or less, it's the same test.

> Silly question - can fpdf produce pdf reports using CID fonts and not
> embed them?

I don't know fpdf at all, this is waiting yet.
I only believe ISO is 1 byte, CID 2 bytes and UTF-8
variable. Think on mp3, constant bitrate (like iso and cid) and variable
bitrate (like utf-8). Did you notice that there is no player that shows
correct track duration of variable bitrate mp3s? the same occurs with
utf-8 strings (worse because they are not files so there is no index, no
header;
utf8 strings must be readed in secuence from beginning to know what they
say,
the meaning of a byte may depend on previous; string lenght is like track
duration).

ASCII =  128
ANSI, ISO = 256
CID = 65536
UTF-8 = more than 100000 (almost double than CID)

I made a mistake to test with Acrobat Standard, better said, to think that
Reader would have the same minimal font collection; Reader has one font
less, the one I like, Kozuka Gothic (I prefer sans-serif). The same occurs
with Bitstream, serif is free and sans-serif no. If you don't dislike Kozuka
Mincho (the serif Kozuka), this is delivered with Reader, it's not free but
it's
no-cost. Also, I made the CID versions (CJK) of Bitstream Cyberbit (another
serif, freely donated) with fontforge; it must be installed (well, just
copied) to
Acrobat CID fonts folder and not be installed in the system fonts. This last
is
the main problem with Arial, if the user has a recent Office, Arial Unicode
MS
is installed on the system by default (in my old Office 2000 it's not
installed by
default). Briefing, it cannot be an ambiguous 2 fonts with the same name,
one
CID and the other no, because Acrobat searches in the system first. This is
the reason I tested Bitstream Vera and Deja Vu: they are the same font with
different names, but they are not Unicode.

The language selection will turn in a font choice because CID fonts are
not global multi-language and font for the selected language/s must be
properly selected. If user only wants the most common languages like
english, german, french, spanish, portuguese, italian, danish, etc. he
could always select any font, core or not.

Kozuka Mincho is delivered and allowed to be used ...
Bitstream cyberbit is free ...
All other free fonts are not Unicode and most are "artistic" ...
Arial has more disadvantages than the above ...
One question is: may I copy Kozuka Gothic from my Acrobat Standard
to my Acrobat Reader without legal punishment? I think the answer is no,
because they charge fonts at 20-30$ each, and Kozuka Gothic is not the
good one (it's not regular but medium); that (the regular) will be the one
in
Acrobat Professional (insert coin :-)

What I dislike from Adobe and Microsoft is that they let us use one thing
today but we cannot rely on them for tomorrow.

Many thanks Phil; next days I'll remake the TCPDF example 8 variations
with the ¿conclusions? and a link to download the bitstream cyberbit CID
version/s. Then you can test with epdf and Foxit and we will have more
shared info.
