11.1 RC1 installation on Mac G3 Powerbook

I'm pleased to report a considerable degree of success with 11.1 RC1 on
a 1999 Mac Powerbook G3 (Lombard), also on an iMac of the same era
(which behaves very similarly).

Installer ran smoothly and quickly, apart from:

1. suggesting formatting of the small hfs (boot?) partition, which will
fail with error -3023 setting partition label. Bug
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=447782, but work-around is
not to agree to formatting, it seems to work OK thus far...

2. Boot loader ignores other bootable systems on HD. This is bug
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=396361 - reported in June
2008 against 11.0 RC1 and present in all subsequent builds. Again, an
easy work-around.

Post - installation, a few more problems:

3. Sound works, but volume controls / mixers / mute don't

4. Openoffice isn't available to install (don't know the bug ID but it's
well reported).

Not looking *too* bad for GM whenever that will be - still on 16th maybe...?

Glad to hear it.  I just haven't had time to do any real testing on my
machines.  I plan to get RC1 on my B&W G3 with a G3/400 and a G4/400
sometime this week.

IIRC, 11.0 does the same thing.  I just did a re-install on my
Wallstreet and used a 100MB HFS directory as /boot.  YaST gave me an
error message, but it worked ok and I had the kernels available to me
on OS 9, which is something I have struggled with on Old World Macs.
I'm working on a writeup for Old World Machines, and I think this will
work well on these machines that can't directly boot Linux.  If I run
into a problem with it on RC1, I will post a bug about it.  Not the
same thing, but a similar type issue.

Couldn't tell you there cause I don't install it.  I do know that
Peter has a thread open about it.

I didn't see this with 11.0 but it was a blocker for me on beta5 and RC1
until I found this work-around. I couldn't get the installation going at
all prior to RC5 but I imagine it was there too :-(

I have some text on this on my personal site, if you want I can give you
a link off-list (it's not really a work to be too proud of!)

Some progress on this bug with active input from Takashi Iwai at Novell
/ SuSE, I am optimistic of a fix. I'm sure he'll be interested to know
status on other PPC32 platforms?
