Bought a 98 Virago 5 days ago. I have ordered all new tune-up parts and such. This bike did a lot of sitting. It only had 9700 miles on it. I had ridden it for about 3 days. It's only about 4 miles to work. I discovered when I came out to go home as it was getting dusk that the right rear running light was out. I noted that the other three were on along with the instrument lights. I tried all the turn signals & they worked. Then I realized the instrument lights had gone out. As it got darker I saw that the headlight was out also. The neutral light, the 3 other running lights, all 4 blinkers, and the stop/brake lights all still work.

I checked the fuses under the instrument panel & all appear good. Is this by chance a common issue with this bike or have I experienced something specific about this one. I figure it to be a short unless there is a relayu somewhere. I was hoping this might be a common issue so someone would know the cure without me spending a lot of time duplicating someone else's work. Any answers would be appreciated. I want to ride!

Check your wiring connnections first and then check the bulbs if the fuses are OK.

Just read the post, hope you have fixed the problem by now.  I had the same problem and it was in the right switches on the handlebars in the start switch.  carl

The running light is, most likely, a bad bulb or socket. The headlight and instrument lights turn off when you push the start button and come back on when you release it. The start switch is probably sticking and not returning all the way when released. Try gently pulling out on the button and see if the lights come back on. If they do, get some contact cleaner or WD40 and spray into the switch while working it in and out to free it up.
