1G optical NIC for 6501

Hi All,

Looking for a 1G optical NIC for 6501. Most NICs I can find on ebay
look too big to fit the tiny PCI Express socket on the soekris.

Any recommendations?

I plan to use it on OpenBSD 5.1.

Best regards,
Dan

agreed, the PCIe connector should have been the "open" type, so as to be
able to fit PCIe 4x cards

I've on rare occasion had to resort to an external copper-to-optical
media converter.  Not pretty, but they do seem to work.  But be careful
about how they manage link state signals.

They keep changing models under me, but the ones I used were similar to
this one.  I kinda like having SFP modules as it let's me pick the short
or long haul optics.

I've had good success with the tplink offering.

google search says:

allied telesys has

http://www.alliedtelesis.com/p-1856.html

which for better or worse is a broadcom and is available dual port if
you're so inclined.

Hi Dan and list,

for using PCIe GB LAN cards with the Soekris net6501 I found only some vendors, the cards from them will fits in the box by the length.
The first and more expensive one is Allied Telesis; the second is less expensive and called out TP-Link.

As an example what I found out on <http://eu.startech.com>
<http://eu.startech.com/Networking-IO/Adapter-Cards/1000Base-SX-SC-Multi-Mode-Fiber-Gigabit-PCI-Express-550m~PEX1000MMSC> ~160 €
<http://eu.startech.com/Networking-IO/Adapter-Cards/1000-Mbps-Gigabit-Ethernet-Multi-Mode-ST-Fiber-PCI-Express-Card-550m~PEX1000MMST> ~150 €

<http://shop.bizsyscon.com/planet-enw-9701-pci-express-gigabit-fiber-optic-adapter/> ~ $85

That you find them cheap on ebay I don´t really know.
That the cards are supported by OpenBSD I can´t answer you, but OpenBSD is standing for:

Very secure, very stable and with many code auditing, but that means on the other side also, that not every driver will join the OS/code to be set up.
Perhaps you try a backside search! Have a look what kind of adapters OpenBSD are supported and then you do a search with the exact card or chipset name
and find perhaps faster what you want and need.

Since we have here in Germany growing up FTTH (fiber to the Home) from several ISP´s an very popular solution is the Speed modem from the vendor Pan DaCom Direkt.
So you can save the free PCIe port in the box for other cards ;). If you need the fiber card as a WAN port solution it will also perhaps fit your needs.
It will be enough for a FTTH Internet connection with 200 MBit/s download and 100 MBit/s upload speed. (200 MBit/s : 8 = 25 MB/s) also the 100 MB/s ports
are enough for the connection, if you plan to set up this card as a WAN port!!!!! If not a Plain media converter from Allied Telesis MC1000 Series will be also
interesting for you, because you don´t need to search something to be compatible and driver or OS supported, this solution is driver and OS independent !!!!!!!!!

If all searches will fail, perhaps you will have a short look at the <http://www.pandacomdirekt.com/en/products/modems/fiber-optic-modems/universal-fo-modem.html>
This modem named "speed modem" is a very interesting solution:
LC input port (LC/LC - SX over MMF) = WAN Port
Copper uplink network - 100 MB/s
Copper uplink telephone
RJ45 console port

Best regards and good luck

Frank

PS:

@Soren ;)

For future upcoming Soekris boards, boxes and spare parts,
if those wishes or needs become more popular I mean.
