1GB Trash. Permission denied.

I have almost 1GB Trash in Gnome 'Trash' (Desktop Trash)
I am not allowed to delete it.

I got this Location-info:
trash:///
Location: trash:///_RIKA-DELETE-OK%3F  (a folder in Trash)
          trash:///_RIKA-DELETE-OK%3F/070614 (a file)

I tried to do something about it via the terminal (cmd-line).
But I cant locate 'Trash' (or it's contents).

--how do I delete this trash?

... or how do I find the Trash (and contents)
on the command-line, so I can do something about it.

If I delete via the GUI I get:
Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting PC222481.JPG.
Show more details:
Error removing file: Permission denied
    CANCEL    SKIP-ALL   SKIP

And:
Sorry, could not change the permissions of "P6141423.JPG": Operation not
supported by backend

Herman, I'm not home right now to check, but look in ~/.config for the
Trash. I think it's there.

On my system it appears to be in ~/.local/share/Trash

None found. I checked ~/.config manually.
In my HOME dir: No 'Trash' folder or file found by 'Search for files'.

Out of curiosity I just looked at ~/.config and see things pertaining to
apps that I deleted long ago and others pertaining to apps currently
installed (but no trash). What is the function of this directory?

It is used to store configuration information by those applications
which use it. Essentially .config is preferable to every app using
their own .app file (which can become very disorganized). These files
are not removed when you remove an application because they are not
created by the package itself. If there is an app in there you no
longer have installed, you can also remove its configuration if you
like, same for an app which you would like to have reset to an
unconfigured state.

That clears it up for me. Thanks.

Thanks Tony!
That did it. Found Trash and contents and (after a little struggle for
the right cmd) deleted the contents of Trash.

...Thank NoOp for: (the GUI 'Find Files' does not show it)
n0jn@bsw:~$ locate Trash
/home/n0jn/.local/share/Trash
/home/n0jn/.local/share/Trash/files
/usr/lib/bonobo/servers/GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet.server
/usr/share/gnome-2.0/ui/GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet.xml
n0jn@bsw:~$
(I added it to my 'Find Files' folder ...)

And Thanks again Dotan.
.. and some others.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

You need to purge the applications, not remove them, to erase those
files. From TFM for apt-get:

remove
remove is identical to install except that packages are removed
instead of installed. Note the removing a package leaves its
configuration files in system. If a plus sign is appended to the
package name (with no intervening space), the identified package  will
be installed instead of removed.

purge
purge is identical to remove except that packages are removed and
purged (any configuration files are deleted too).

I hate to tell you, but when I remove an app, I always use purge.

Actually, purge does not remove ~/.config directories or files.  Neither
apt-get nor aptitude will remove any files from a user's home directory.
Purge (as opposed to remove) will delete system config directories and
files for the package being purged; remove (as opposed to purge) will
not.  Whichever method you use, you will still be left with any config
files in your user's home.  Delete them manually if you don't want them
anymore.

That's misleading - by "any configuration files" it means "the ones we know
about".  Purging never does anything about the files in ~/, only the ones in
/etc/.

I might be wrong about purge, but I think even files in ~/.config would
stay behind.  Keep in mind that configuration files stored in the user
home directory are not installed with the package (those are in /etc
directory) but are instead created on the fly when the user runs the
application.  If purge were to try to remove those files, the package
would need to include a "search and destroy" script in post-uninstall,
which would probably be considered somewhat dangerous.

Have you checked that the schelling converter? If it is leaking
chlorocarbonates, even a little, then the config files might not purge
properly.

Purge removes system wide configuration, not the users' configuration in his or her home directory.

i had several users ask that they not be quoted such, for fear that
their email addresses would get harvested. Apparently TFA obfuscate
email addresses in the header, but not in the bodies.
