2004.8 install problems - OS X multi-user

We've been running 4D 2004.7r3 without any problems in a mixed Win XP and OS X environment.  I tried upgrade to 2004.8 today.  The server (OS X tiger ppc) and Windows client upgrades were successful. However, I have run into problems installing 2004.8 client on our OSX tiger clients.

I have always installed 4D client as a local administrator, using a drag and drop install into the Applications folder. Other network users (portable home directories) on the same computer have always have had correct permissions to launch 4D with past versions.  With 2008.4, only the user who originally installed 4D Client is able to launch the application.  I have tried to change permissions on 4D Client and then the program will not launch at all.  I have gone back and re-installed 2004.7r3 and once again all users are able to launch 4D Client.  Any ideas?  Is this a bug?

Thanks,

Yes, we're having the same problem. Saw the same thing with v11.4
which was fixed in 11.4hf2 so I'm assuming it is a permissions bug.
For as long as Network Accounts have been around, you would think
these kinds of issues would have gone away by now.

The client app installs with read & write permissions set for the
current user only. Anyone else has no access. I modified the
permissions on the app and also the package contents to allow anyone
read & write. No problems copying that file to other machines.
However, we run with network home folders (ldap) and even though
permissions are set for everyone, the app will not launch when the
user is logged into the network account. The only way to fix this was
to copy the Client app to the User's Home Applications folder.

Unfortunately, we also have a large number of clients that Netboot and
obviously, this is a deal killer for them. When the client tries to
launch on a Netboot machine, the machine asks for an administrator
password and freezes. There's obviously some permissions problem that
runs a little deeper. Will do more digging... or wait for 2004.8r2...
if it comes.

You can create an Applications folder in each /Users/{UserX} folder
and put your application in there. Makes for multiple copies of your
app on the machine, but at least you should be able to use the version
of 4D that you want to use.

I had to do this in a couple situations to avoid  -5000 errors on OS X
when putting our 4D Client in the system Applications folder.

Putting 4D in the local user Applications folder isn't a great alternative for us.  It would involve changing our MCX settings and could create user confusion.

Right now were running 2004.7r3 with the 2004.8 server and everything seems fine so far.  Any gotchas with this approach?

Yes, let's hope for 2004.8r2 ;)

Yes, that is what we have had to do, and although an annoyance, it's
fine for our small number of machines that boot their own OS. However,
it is not practical for our Netboot systems. There is a reason we set
them up in a Netboot configuration in the first place. We have run up
against this issue so many times with 4D. It would certainly be nice
if 4D (and many other vendors) ensured their software worked with
network accounts before releasing. Again, it's not like this is brand
new technology.

Console shows that permissions are being denied when trying to execute
4D Client/Contents/Mac OS/4D Client
even though permissions for that particular file show full access.
Must be something internal to that particular executable. I too have
experienced the -5000 errors in the past which have been corrected by
modifying the package content permissions, but this definitely goes
outside of that. 4D needs to fix this.

In my experience you need to use a Folder to get Finder to Apply To
Enclosed:
- put Client 2004.8 in Folder
- Get Info on the Folder
- Unlock and set Permissions to Read Write
- Choose Apply To Enclosed Items from the pulldown with the app-gear icon

Or you can use a utility like BatchMod...

mixing version is a very good approach for producing problems.
And when problems appear, people are very good in blaming 4D for that.
tiring ...
