All-

If you had not heard the rumors - the Boy Scout Handbook has gone
digital and is now online.  The handbook is the latest of several recent
initiatives to modernize scouting including podcasts, an online scouting
community, and online presence on social networking sites and a YouTube
Channel.

Not exactly what I thought it would be.  This looks more like a
supplement to the handbook.  I was thinking that it would be a PDF or
something in HTML.  I doubt youth will really use it; way too
complicated.  IMO.

Ditto.  I kept clicking and clicking and wondering where the BOOK  was.  I
can handle online if it's easily readable. I don't want to keep  clicking to
find what I want.  In this case, I'll take a printed book,  thank you very
much!

Take this to Boy-Scout-Talk it has nothing to do with Troopmaster software so it doesn't belong here.

Actually, it does - you can expect a major revision of the troopmaster
requirements in December.

BSA would go a long way to hire someone who could really design internet content to load quickly and smoothly, focusing on the actual content not the bells and whistles of a feel good web site. Who wants to wait while flash video loads? To be quite honest I'm sure the on-line book probably does have some great stuff for the kids like the behind the scenes look at the two year process to make a web page. I freely admit I could not watch the video of a bunch of old people sitting around a table "planning" the online handbook.  I do have a high speed internet connection and in the first thirty seconds figured out this site will have limited serviceability to the normal boy scout.

I'm sorry for the rant, let us get back to what this forum is about.

David,

I agree.  Back on topic.  When the new requirements come out, everyone
is supposed to be going to the new req's.  When Troopmaster comes out
with the update, I hope that they have both requirements (pre-2010 for
those working on the badge before the change) and post 2010, that has
the new requirements.

And I have high speed and everything is based in super sized jpg.  They
would have been better off making a flash version, allowing the dialup
folks to get a little at a time.

Let us remember that  this group specifically for Troopmaster product discussions.

We need to keep or discussions not only on topic but we need to remember the Scout oath and law while communicating to others.

We will from time to time have a post that does not directly tie into Troopmaster issues. We should politly direct that person to the appropriate users group.

We should not be making snide comments.

If after commenting on a off topic issue and directing them to the appropriate location, send a email to the moderator, and let me take care of it.

Sadly though, they're charging $9.99.  You can get the same online for free at their new website.  BSA seems out of touch at ~$10, since it is a supplement to a physical handbook.  Perhaps $0.99 would have been a better play.

That's not true.  What you get in the download for $9.99 is the complete
handbook.  The same handbook that you pay $9.99 for in paperback.  What you
get on the Web at www.bsahandbook.org is a companion site which provides
additional material for each chapter and links to outside resources related
to the material in that chapter.

I have no idea whether $10 for an iPhone application is a reasonable price
or not, but it is the price for the electronic version of the paper
handbook, not the companion Web site.

Sadly though, they're charging $9.99.  You can get the same online for free
at their new website.  BSA seems out of touch at ~$10, since it is a
supplement to a physical handbook.  Perhaps $0.99 would have been a better
play.
