I live at 4300 ft elev most of the places I use my generator are 4000 ft or above. The spark plug is black, I have cleaned it a couple of times. I think I need to lean it out a little. The manual says the main jet is a #101.3 I have found a #98.8 main jet. Is that 1 step or several steps leaner? Do I need to change or adjust any thing else? Any and all suggestions welcome.

That appears to be one step of change, or at least the amount of change you'll need with your black sparkplug insulator and 4000+ ft elevation. You'll also need to run adjust the pilot screw toward leaner, if there is one (hidden or not).
A too high float level (if adjustable) will also cause a too rich condition. This can also happen with the float needle cone and seat wearing from a zillion hours runtime.

Thanks for the help Rob. I have recently acquired a service manual, now all I have to do is get the generator, manual, new spark plug, and tiny jet in the same location.
