Dunno which page you got that information from but the front page of
the Wiki links to http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.8/schedule which
(hopefull) has all the information you're looking for.

Cheers,

Yeah, that was the one I was talking about. Bummer the other one's true :)
Thanks for the update.

You can expect development releases earlier than the final release date
for most of the components. The new thumbnailer service tumbler should
be ready in a few weeks, same goes for exo for which a release is
planned as well. A new development release of Thunar will be out
shortly after these two components have been released. So if you're ok
with compiling parts of Xfce on your own, you won't have to wait until
next April.

It's not the compiling, it's the fumbling the results into a deb package ;)
Ah, back then on Slackware...

You should still be able to use the actual debian/ folder for current
packages as a start point.

Ever since I migrated to debian and debian-like systems I wanted to learn how
to make debs myself, but everyone I ask keeps huring the debian package
maintainer guide at me which obliterates me with badly structured torrents of
info and is generally overblown for my needs as my goal is not to release
packages to a public mirror.
Pointers like "how to quickly create debs and skip the most common tripwires"
are welcome.

I think the packaging tools are (one of) the strength of Debian like ditros.
I think the same about Gentoo.

For easy packaging, I would suggest Slackware or Fedora.

I dont see one suitable to your needs, sorry.
But I would suggest talking about it on the debian-mentors list:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/

Things migth evolve when some have talk...

man dpkg-buildpackage

Start with that... it made my understanding easier.

I then went onto other pieces parts when I wanted something different.
