This week's topic: QuickTime and YouTube Movies in Web Area

The Web Area is a powerful tool that allows you to view local or remote HTML pages all conveniently within the confines of your 4D Solution. There have been a slew of Web Area-related Technical Notes that have highlighted how to do web mashups, how to extend the area as a 4D form, and how to inject JavaScript into live web pages.

This Technical Note refines the last aforementioned example by showing how to control Quicktime and YouTube videos via the Web Area's JavaScript injection functions. 1. 4D Plug-in SDK is Now Open Source

To the delight of 4D plug-in developers in the audience and beyond, Christophe Keromen announced during the Welcome keynote at 4D Summit 2009 the open source availability of 4D Plug-in SDK.

"Now, sources will be publicly hosted at sources.4d.com," said Keromen. "All the documentation will be available there. And all of the source code will be available through Subversion Client. You can use free clients like Tortoise on Windows and svnX on Mac OS X."

This week's topic: Calling 4D Methods From SQL Statements

Calling 4D project methods from SQL statements allows developers to use 4D code that already works to improve their searches. This option does not alter the structure of the SQL statement and any project method can be called from within SQL. In this way developers can have the benefit of reusing 4D code from within a SQL statement to perform more complex tasks. Developers more familiar with SQL can implement the functionality of the 4D language without worrying about syntax details so long as they understand the method’s input and expected output.

Apple's latest operating system release, Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" is now available.

For 4D v11 SQL Users

4D v11 SQL is optimized for the latest hardware and software, including Mac OS X. That means the speed and stability improvements coming in Snow Leopard will soon be felt in 4D. We're working hard with Apple to ensure that the entire 4D v11 SQL product line and the solutions you create with it will be Snow Leopard certified. We'll inform you as soon as the certification is complete.

For 4D 2004 Users

The 4D 2004 product line has entered its "Sunset" phase. This means that there will be no further development, nor any new OS testing and certification. While 4D 2004-based solutions may continue to work with future OS updates, possibly in compatibility mode, 4D cannot certify their performance.

If you have 4D 2004 systems in production that you cannot quickly upgrade to 4D v11 SQL, we advise that you perform testing before installing any new OS versions. As previously announced, we also recommend purchasing additional licenses as soon as possible as prices will increase on September 15th.

To ensure the performance and stability you've come to expect with each new release, we have committed our resources to the development of current and future versions of 4D.

Triggers are methods attached to a table whose execution depends on database events; when a record is being created, modified or deleted. Because of this, they can be used for a variety of reasons like data control, relational integrity, encrypting and decrypting data and so on.

These actions can be done outside triggers but the developer needs to take into consideration that records can be created, modified and deleted not only from 4D forms but also from web connections, ODBC connections, SQL Pass-through and so on. In cases like these, triggers can be used to track for any record changes.
