With maintenance you are able to subscribe and get full version upgrades for the term of your maintenance contract. For example, if you purchase 4D Server v11 SQL with 2 users you with maintenance you will be able to upgrade that particular license to the newest version of 4D for 1 year. You can renew your maintenance program each year to keep that license under maintenance and then every time a new version comes out you will get the license for it at no additional charge.

Daniel:

When you move a form from one database to another in 4D v11, 4D will show all methods, interface objects like pictures from the picture library, and menus that need to be created or moved to the target. The menu bar shown is the attached menu bar for the form.

A word of caution here:

If your form has menu bar 2 attached, for instance it is moved by title to the receiving database (the target) but the actual menu ID will be the next available ID for the target database. So "Menu Bar 3" with an ID of 3 in the source database might be moved to the target database titled as "Menu Bar 3" with an ID of 2 for instance. This, of course, could have impact on methods you've written to enable and/or disable menus by menu number. You can edit the title but not the ID. The lack of copy and paste in the menu editor in 4D v11 is a glaring omission that has yet to be addressed by the engineers at 4D.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that tip. I've tried it and there seem to be limitations.
Cannot copy menus, for instance. Does anyone know of a way to get
around these limitations. My situation is that I want to merge a
Japanese and a Chinese database. Since 4D 2003 and 2004 were not
Unicode compliant, to have both languages working well I need to use
4D v11. Only catch is is that Insider is now gone. Thus, the strange
request.

I tried what you said, but I don't seem to be able to do that. I am
using the latest version of 4D SQL.

First of all, it seems you can only have one database open at a time.
So how will I drag from one structure menu to another.
Secondly, is there a way to search for items you want to transfer. For
example, with Insider you used to be able to search all methods that
used a certain field, or variable, or whatever. Then you could select
those items and drag them over.

Am I missing a special interface in vSQL? Thanks.

Problem on sequence with 4d SQL 11.4 server

Since October of last year we have the following problem, and now also
send this Email to this list, with the hope you can help us:

Problem 1) We send an Email with a problem, and following our Email we
received a revised database, which did not work either (see point 2):

1A) Problem: The above method is to give new invoice numbers. Works
okay with 4d SQL 11.2 mono-user, however, does not work with 4d SQL
11.2 server/client, due to the following error: when cancelling the
operation, a new number is added anyway.

2) Here also the revised structure that was sent by 4D was going
completely wrong as well: when we cancel the operation 4D Client
simply ignores cancel and adds a numer to the secuence. Then when you
again want to add a record, for example, an invoice, the secuence
number is not correct at all! This problem does not exist with 4D
Professional 11.3, and only with the Server solution!!! We need a
rapid solution for this all.

4D 2004 ODBC

Hi,
I am very new to 4D. A client of mine has an existing 4D 2004 database that they use regularly.

They have asked me if it would be possible to import some XML files directly into the database. These XML files need to be added every couple of days.

What would the best approach be:
1 - write a ruby/python script to parse the XML feed and INSERT it into the 4D database via an ODBC connection
2 - I had a look at the 4D.com website and it looked like 4D had some built in XML capability, is this in 2004 version ?
3 - Is there some other, better solution ?

They are running 4D 2004 on a Mac 10.4 server.

I have a combo box which will not accept interprocess variables, but
does accept $ variables.
I need interprocess because the combo box should reflect changes which
other processes have made.
Am I making a mistake or is this standard behaviour ?

I am pleased to announce the 'taint Rocket Science web site.

We feature podcasts on using 4D which are also available on iTunes for
both the beginner and the expert. An introductory episode is now
available for your viewing pleasure. We also have a blog to provide a
forum to discuss various design issues and concepts. Episode 2 is
already in the works and will be published soon where we'll get into
the database structure of our basic application shell, startup
methods, defaults, preferences, and how they work. In the future we'll
have guest developers who'll offer their tips on how we work with this
powerful tool, 4D.

I had exactly the same problem but I now solved it and here is how: I created a form with 5 file-upload fields in the form. Submitting the form to 4D, catch the body with 'Get http body($body) and execute the blob to picture command. The Blob can't be analyzed but the picture variable can. I saved the picture to disk (write picture file) and the opened the file in Text-edit. As I know the name of the web-form fields and discovered that directly at the end of every image in the variable there was a "-----WebKitFormBoundary..." (I use Safari maybe other things from other browsers) I then could get the position in the blob with 'AP Find in Blob' from the plug-in API pack (Shareware). Rest is easy. copy to blob(from start-original; to start-copy; tobefore position of "---...";number of bytes) blob to picture once again and you have the new image in the new picture variable. write picture file or whatever with the new variable. Delete from blob (the old blob) the bytes you already have in the new picture variable.

Put everything in a loop that loops as many times as there are pictures in the form.

This works fine for uploading one picture but seems to not work on
multiple pictures. I have identical code right after this code but
substituted picBLOB with picBLOB1. Using TRACE the picBLOB variable
gives the picture size but picBLOB1 variable always seems to display
the picture file name.

Anyone know how to get around this?

Session Spotlight - Web Reporting Systems

One of the mostly overlooked features of the 4D Ajax Framework is it's
out of the box reporting capabilities. This session will expand on a
topic covered last year, where the 4DAF was used as a reporting
mechanism for a 4D 2004 system. This session will show all the many
reporting capabilities of the 4DAF that are available through a point
and click interface.

Calling 4D project methods from SQL statements allows developers to use
4D code that already works to improve their searches. This option does
not alter the structure of the SQL statement and any project method can
be called from within SQL. In this way developers can have the benefit
of reusing 4D code from within a SQL statement to perform more complex
tasks. Developers more familiar with SQL can implement the functionality
of the 4D language without worrying about syntax details so long as they
understand the method’s input and expected output.
