They could try to separate Server to 32 bit frontend and 64-bit data
serving faceless processes communicating with frontend through IPC.

The word was that the Cocoa migration is certainly in the works, but much to
early to talk about when they think that might be done.

The reason why 4D is not 64-bit on Mac is because it is a Carbon app
and Apple decided to not port Carbon to 64-bit. To make 4D Server
support 64-bit on Mac there are two options:
1. Make it a faceless application that runs in the background.
2. Port 4D from Carbon to Cocoa. Which is a major undertaking.

Someone must be blogging this, BUT,
New store to come with new site, complete license management features
Single login for all 4D sites (KB, Store, Partner area I think?)

NO NEW FEATURES in v11 - yay! 11.5 ships in November. Word is 11.4hf6 is
pretty darn stable by all accounts.

V12 highlights so far:
- Hierarchical grouping in 4D list areas - very easy
- Method editor updates - Bookmarks (within a method), Line Continuation
(woo-hoo!), Marks updated code, saved and unsaved, display collapsed code on
hover, I'm sure some other things
- Duplicate Object command in language, so Dynamic Objects and Variables
- SQL->List variable creates fully functional fields that can then be
manipulated in language
- new Get Object Pointer function, selectors to get object by name, current
focus, more...
- Enhanced subforms - can use any form, including from a component

My favorites:
- "PHP Execute" command - can call any native 4D function, as well as custom
functions
- PDO (PHP Data Object) native for 4D - just define the DSN from PHP

Still another hour or so to go. Brendan was quick to point out that the V12
features are PLANNED rather than promised, but we saw PHP functionality
working, and it will be used in the backend of the new store.

Next slide is "64 Bit Support" - we shall see...

Well, I hate NOT being there - especially since Atlanta is only two
hours away. But, I hope you all (y'all) enjoy some good southern
hospitality while your here.

My hope is that you'll discover that a few of your preconceptions of
the south were wrong:

• Atlanta is not representative of the south in general. We're much
more laid back.
• We often don't use blinkers in the south. In the rest of the south,
it's because we don't usually have anyone behind us anyway. In
Atlanta, it's because people don't want to give you forewarning that
they're about to cut you off.
• As inferred by the previous statement, hospitality does not occur on
our interstate highways. You might spot it in one of our rest stops or
on less-traveled roads, however.
• The south is NOT full of rednecks. We have _some_ of them. We try to
hide them in trailer parks, but they occasionally escape.
• For the most part, we don't hate black people. Some of them don't
hate us, either. Racism is everywhere, but somehow we're stuck with
that moniker, here.
• I didn't vote for Jimmy Carter. Do I deserve credit for not being
biased toward the candidate from the south? For a "peacekeeper", he
sure knows how to start a fight.
• NASCAR is popular, but not everyone here loves it. I once thought
"pole position" was a slanderous term.
• Most of us DO like SEC football. Unfortunately, my wife is not most people.
• Just because we speak slowly does not mean we're stupid. Sometimes
it works to our advantage, though. We often allow people to think
we're stupid so they won't move here -- but what do I know?
• Most of us do not attend family reunions in order to pick up girls.
Besides, the pretty cousins were too stuck up to go out with me.
• If you spot someone with few teeth, it's more likely because they
got into a fight than for hygienic reasons.
• We laugh at ourselves all the time. You can smile - but don't join in.

Sorry darlin' not coming this year. First time I've missed one in, I
think, 17 years. It's mainly because Rob and Cliff aren't going.

I finished the Summit Cartoon for the Summit before last, but the DSL
modem/router that this rinky-dink phone company has me using is giving
me fits, so 4thDimension.com is not visibly to the outside world. <GRRR>

Y'all should give Jason Haley from Footprints here in Moab, a hard time.
He's a fairly new 4D developer, so he needs to be kept up out night. Yee
Haw!!!

QUESTION: Does anyone have a _complete_ list of every 4D Devcon and
Summit (including the 3rd party summits that were held at ski resorts)? I
can pretty much run down all that I've been to, but I sometimes get

API Record to Blob, BLOB to text and back = crash

I'm sending a record to a blob, compressing the blob, calling blob to
text, sticking the text in the body of an email, receiving the email
with a different app, and frequently crashing when pulling the record
out and saving it. Using 2004.8 on Mac OS 10.5.8 and Win XP. When it
works the records are received in perfect condition.

I bumped the process stack to 512K. The records tend to be around
350-450 bytes before compression, no pictures or subtables. i stuck in
some logging code and the crash happens at various points within the
method or just after the record is saved.

What am I doing wrong?
