4D-driven website

Not a plea for help this time:
An invitation to view the 4D-driven website that I've been building
the past several years. Probably not a technological marvel, but I am
enormously proud of it, and I'd love for y'all to take a look. Last
week I finally managed to "manage state" - and I want to show
somebody who'll care!

The site focuses on plants in the Carolinas and Georgia. As I've had
opportunities to present it to audiences I'm often asked "what
database did you use?" When I answer, the next question is why did I
use something they haven't heard of (there's not a huge 4D community
in this part of the world) and what will I do when I want to expand.

I've been working with 4D since 1990, so I'm not a newbie, but my
knowledge is limited. I tell them possibly they're not familiar with
4D because it's marketed primarily to developers? and that I'm not
likely to exceed its capabilities.

But I wondered to myself, would it even be possible to build this
kind of a website using another database? There's so much
"back-and-forth" between 4D and the browser. It serves pictures and
sound files and adds links etc on the fly. I'm not familiar with
other databases so I don't know.

The website is <http://www.namethatplant.net>www.namethatplant.net. I
haven't yet plugged in enough data for the "managed state" aspect to
go public, but the mechanism seems to work;
will put you on the path to where it can kick in.

The database is maintained in v2003.2 and serves in v2004.2, from an iMac.

Come see!

*Looks and functions great. Very snappy.  So the entire web site is powered
by 4D?  I have not tried that yet. How hard was it to master the web part.*

Looking good! Works well, effective interface- especially like the data
complexity in the left side allowing quick access to more and more details..

Thank you, Tom -

The "web part" went pretty smooth, if you mean the HTML. I used Dreamweaver.

If you mean getting the database and browser to start talking to one
another, that was difficult for me - and probably never would have
happened if a computer-savvy friend hadn't come over one evening and
loaned his expertise. As is the case with many things, the actual
doing was not as hard as figuring out what to do. David Adams' The 4D
Web Companion and associated WebCore were invaluable, and Paul
Carnine's AutoDoc plug-in made it easy to use Dreamweaver with 4D.
