The minute I clicked send, it dawned on my what I had done wrong... I defined the list box variable as a longint instead of a boolean. All is fine with the universe now.

Hi all,

Working in v11 R5. I had a list box on a form it that worked fine. Needed a new list box in the same form so I duplicated the existing one, changed it's Variable Name, Row Font Color Array, and pointed the columns to all new arrays.

The new list box is working fine except that I cannot select a row manually, Click on a row and nothing happens. The box indicates that it has the focus, but the row does not select. The original list box continues to work fine.

What have forgotten to do?

QUERY SELECTION WITH ARRAY

I'm getting an error I can't understand.

QUERY SELECTION WITH ARRAY([Inventory]Keywords;$keywordsRemove_at)
generates:

Error code: 54
Argument types are incompatible.
component: '4DRT'
component: '4DRT'
task 10, name: '•Inventory'

Field [Inventory]Keywords is typed as text and has a keyword index.
Array $keywordsRemove_at is specifically typed as text.

I've tried QSA on unindexed text fields and I've tried declaring
$keywordsRemove_at as a process variable and as type string. All
generate the Error 54. Regarding typing, the v11 LR says "This command
cannot be used with fields of the Picture, Subfield, or BLOB type."

Even though the error is thrown, array $keywordsRemove_at appears to
be correctly populated and program execution continues.

What am I not seeing here?

Foundation Win4DX Extension Needed

I'm converting a Foundation 3.7.1 application that I developed for a
client so that it works with 4D v2004 (on Windows), and I'm having
trouble with the various dialogs and Alerts used by the Foundation Shell.

It looks like the "US Count Lines" external call in the Win4DX "Extras"
module is not functioning correctly, causing the messages to be truncated
or cut off at the right or the bottom.

Does anyone have an updated "Extras" module for Foundation 3.7.1 that
will work with 4D v2004? I'd appreciate any help I can get in order to
obtain this updated module.

Document List oddness

Has anyone else noticed a problem with DOCUMENT LIST in 11.5 (can't say if problem was there before 11.5). I have a client finding that the document list misses some documents..(Max OS 10.6), we have checked that documents are not corrupt,locked etc and there are of the same time as other documents in the folder.

I am aware there is a reported bug with opening documents and wonder if there is some relation with this.

Using a command line LS they exist.

Is this a known issue or does anyone know a reason why some documents would get missed from the list?

Problem with WA SET PAGE CONTENT (Mac only)

I'm seeing a Mac OS 10.5 client freeze when a form window opens, the
form contains a Web Area and when WA SET PAGE CONTENT is executing
from the form method. This is with 4D v11 r4. Same code works OK on XP.

I've scanned the bug fixes in v11 r5 and didn't notice anything that
might have been fixed along these lines.

This is my first attempt using a WA, so I've probably overlooked
something...

The passwords are not to be used by the 4D login/password system, but stored with each contact record, needs to be unique, alpha numeric, with a mixture of upper and lowercase alphas.

Fields and variables no show

A client purchased one of the new 27" iMacs and is trying to use it with a 2004.8 client/server database. One table's Input form does not display any of the fields and variables in the form. All of the graphics and a hierarchical list display but no fields or variables.

All other input forms are displaying properly and all the older macs in the office continue to displaying this form without any problems.

Fortunately the main focus in the form is the hierarchical list so this is not a show stopper for him, but it does have me scratching my head.

Any thoughts of what the problem might be?

4D v2004 on Windows - Cosmetic Issues

I'm finishing up my conversion of a Foundation 3.7.1-based application
from 4D v6.7 to 4D v2004, and my testing has revealed some cosmetic
problems.

My main Windows box is running Windows XP, and everything looks pretty
good, with one exception: the fonts on scrollable arrays have the
character descenders (p, q, g, etc) cut off at the base line. I think
that we can live with this.

I installed Windows 7 under Parallels on my Mac Pro, and the above
problem also exists there. In addition, popup/dropdown objects and combo
box objects have their buttons distorted and truncated. In other words,
the little downward-pointing triangle on the right side is compressed
horizontally and cut in half, so that the clickable area is only about
30-50% as wide as it should be, with only half of the triangle displayed.

My client uses mostly Windows Vista, and I don't want to have to by Vista
and install it in order to test. The client has one XP machine and one
Windows 7 machine, and the rest are currently Vista.

QUESTION: Does Windows Vista display the popups and combo boxes like
Windows 7, or correctly like XP?

If it's like Windows 7, does anyone have a suggested technique for
correcting the display of the triangles? Do I need to build my own popups
and combo boxes?

parsing text into 4D keywords? I wonder if there are separate lists
for each language...

Params and prefs [WAS] How to Run Multiple Instances of 4D v11 Server?

I feel the same about the "I want all settings" thing, but the real
feature I'm lookng for is a change in thinking regarding how prefs are
managed. Combine all of the various configurations possible with 4D/4D
Servers with the need to develop, test and deploy usually in different
environments and, for some, add the complexities of a VM product, and
we really need to add a "suite" of possible prefs configurations to
our shell code.

What really would be cool would be "I want all settings" for both the
ui and the code. I could use the ui to build a specific config then I
could click the "Generate Parameters Method" button to build the code
equivalent.

Foundation 3.7.1-based app to 4D v2004

I'm currently updating my client's Foundation 3.7.1-based program to 4D
v2004, in order to provide a few new features and improve compatibility
with Windows Vista.

I plan to eventually move them to Foundation 5 and 4D v11, but their
current budget is limited, and some functional additions are needed now.
The same problem would prevent me from moving them to Foundation 4, since
so much of the interface would need to be changed, and also the client
doesn't want another learning curve at this time. I'm trying to save the
big effort for moving them to v11 and Foundation 5 when the time comes.

Most of the conversion has gone pretty well, but I'm finding that the
Foundation 3.7.1 keyboard shortcuts, which are used to trigger menus and
call methods, are being ignored under 4D v2004 on Windows XP.

Does anyone know of a technique that I can use to fix this?

Testing 'locked' status without locking the record

Hi Folks

A 'back to basics' issue I've come across and wanted to solicit
people's understanding of the 'LOCKED ATTRIBUTES' command.

Can I test for a record being locked (by another user) using this
command without actually locking it on the current client ?

In the past I've always used READ WRITE -> LOAD RECORD -> and 'locked'
for this since the only reason I needed to do this was to manage
regular concurrency. Now I have a need to test the 'locked' status of
a record without actually locking it - i.e. check the locked status
while the record is in READ ONLY mode.

Is it other peoples understanding of LOCKED ATTRIBUTES that you can do
this using this command ? The (2004) docs aren't specific about this.

SQL syntax

For the SQL experts...

I'm wondering if I can solve this problem more efficiently using a SQL
query. Given, say, a 5,000-record table with no pre-existing
selection, I need to find the key ID for the "previous" record with a
particular attribute value if the records were sorted by the "order by
field" and given that I wanted the query to originate from key ID =
2254 as shown below. The records below represent those "closest" in
sorted order to the starting point of the query--in reality these
won't exist as a selection, so they also wouldn't be in sorted order.

As an example, from the starting point, I'd like to find the Key ID of
the first "previous" blue record.

Key order by Attribute
1112 136 red
1134 261 blue
4454 400.3 violet
3333 1088 red
1233 1159 yellow
2254 1372 green <--Query "begins" here
1322 1441 blue
1422 1500.9 blue
1611 yellow
2093 red
2101 green
2128.3 violet
etc.

I know I can do it using 4D commands. This is for a 4D Server project,
so I wondered if there were a SQL approach that might be more elegant.

Ahhhh. I did do a search in the knowledgebase, but not from that search box staring at me on every page! I saw that search box but ignored it assuming it was for searching within the 4D Store as it looks like the search box belongs to the 4D store icon.

Something wrong with SENT HTML FILE (4D v11)

Dear folks,

on 4D 2004 we were using SEND HTML FILE to serve all kind of pages.

Now this doesn't work at all, on v11.

For example;

Given the following path to a document on my hard disk:

$path:="Macintosh HD:Users:rafa:Deskt
op:TREBALL_BS:SMP_3_x:Web:VirtualRoot:styles:styles.css"

we used SEND HTML FILE($path) and it was fine... (4D 2004)

on v11 the browser receives just an html - page not found - error:

(After painstakingly converting our flagship application to v11, i'm dismayed
to see the web serving part is not working...arrghh!)

Any ideas?

P.S.:
I know the docs for SEND HTML FILE state that the path must be on html
(slashes only) format
but I also know this has been wrong for years... and btw it doesn't work
also!)

Hi

Does any one know a way to have a macro put the cursor in the right place in my code?

I have a macro that runs on saving a method to insert some header comments. The only issue i have with this is that I also have a background process to force a save every 5 mins, if i have been editing the code the comment is updated so the method text reflows and my cursor pops to the bottom of the method.

Any ideas?

v11 hardware upgrade questions

I have a client that is upgrading from 2004 to v11. They are currently running 2004 server and clients on G4 processors. So I need to make some recommendations on hardware upgrades. The obvious recommendation is to upgrade all the computers to new intel macs, but for financial consideration I think I need to include a less aggressive option.

So a couple of questions.

1. Consequences of not upgrading the hardware... v11 running in leopard on G4 server and clients? Will they realize any of the performance benefits promised in v11.

2. Will moving server to an intel Mac running Snow Leopard but gradually replacing the g4 clients help? Will the mixed bag create any problems?

See 4D v11's EXECUTE FORMULA method, but it executes only a single line of
code. The down-side is that the code in text runs interpretively, it is not
checked by the compiler, it is not syntax checked at entry, and it is not
tokenized, so if you change a table or field name in the 4D structure, which
also occurs in that text, you have to remember to manually update that text
yourself.

One up-side that comes to mind, is if you are doing something like writing a
generic scheduler in which a scheduling method executes other methods at a
predetermined date/time. Without EXECUTE FORMULA, you would need a CASE
statement that takes each possibly scheduled method into account. Example:

case of
:($RunModule=1)
Report_A
:($RunModule=2)
Report_B
:($RunModule=3)
DeleteOldData

The above gets more complex if the method you are calling can accept
parameters, or a variable number of parameters, because you need a case for
each variant.

With EXECUTE FORMULA, you can store the specifics of the method you want to
call, in a schedule record's text field. Example::
"Report_A(False;False;Current date(*))"

"Backing up" web serving?

I'm looking for a simple and affordable way to make sure meaningful
content is available to the web during times when a 4D-based web
server is down. This is not a high-volume site, but reliability is an
important issue.

As it's now set up, the site is all-Mac and we're serving from a 4D
Client/remote machine from a dmz, 4D v11. It would be sufficient for
the time being if we could automagically roll over to a machine
running apache and serving static pages--as subset of the production
site.

Before looking into the details, my concept of "load balancing"
devices was that they were intended more for high-volume situations
(connections and $$ value of transactions). But it appears that some
of the functions they offer include server monitoring and alarms in
addition to directing requests. This site is increasingly supporting
the business and will eventually be hosting transactions. So, I want
to look ahead a bit, but I also don't want to propose something that's
scaled (including the initial expense) for what *might* be a level of
business that's still a couple of years away.

Any easy answers?

4D Server v11.4 hotfix 7 error in method TOOL_AlignButtons??

Eventually, 4D Server pops this error (and others TOOL_@ errors). None of my methods have that name. Anybody knows what's triggers this error.

List Box: pressing alt key on drag bug?

Mac OS; 4D v11

The Mac option key pressed while dragging is HIG for drag-copy as
opposed to drag-move.

Just wondered if anyone else has seen or can confirm that pressing the
alt/option key while dragging a row from one List Box to another
"breaks" the value of return parameter $srcElement_i in the command
DRAG AND DROP PROPERTIES ()?

At the on drop form event, calling DRAG AND DROP
PROPERTIES($srcObject_ptr;$srcElement_i;$srcProcess_i) will result in
srcElement_i=0 when a row from another List Box has been dragged in if
the Mac option key has been pressed.

(FWIW, I'm working around it at this point by calling GET LISTBOX CELL
POSITION(StopsList1_lb;$col_i;gSourceRowLB1_i) at the on begin drag
over form event of the source List Box. This functionality isn't
documented, as far as I can interpret.)

We currently use hmCal so the graphical representation of the schedule is already handled. Users can't be bothered to scroll forward 3 or 6 months into the future to view the schedule but want a button to tell the program to go out and find the hole for them.

A Different Scheduling Problem

I've enjoyed the thread started by David Adams on detecting overlapping events.

A common request we get from clients is "Can you find me the next available slot for an 15/30/45 minute appointment?"

What approaches do you take to find something that technically is not there?

Implicit Typing would be nice to have

It would sure be nice if we had a command like this:

C_REAL("r@")

and

C_TEXT("@_t")

which would implicitly type all variables whose names began with, or that
ended with a particular string.

30+ years ago, I could easily do this in Fortran:
