Hi all,

waiting for the final 3.0 release, you can download the new 3.0-beta2
from the 64 Studio mirrors:

http://www.64studio.com/download

some of them are still syncing, but most have the ISO images already
in place, for example:

http://64studio.hivelocity.net/installer/

You can get an overview of the changes by looking at the timeline:

http://trac.64studio.com/64studio/timeline?from=02%2F24%2F09&daysback=54&ticket=on&update=Update

the main news is the we ship with kernel 2.6.29-rc4-rt2, which
supports newer hardware like SATA2.

Enjoy :)

Ciao!

In addition to the things Dave saw (except the hanging 1st shutdown)
There are a couple of packages missing, to complete the 64 Studio feel...

thunderbird rosegarden nautilus-open-terminal totem gftp gnotime patch
pppoe samba smb-client sound-juicer ssh

to name a few.  We need to get a list of the appications we had in 2.1
and check which we still need, and cary those over.

The server for downloads in Synaptic is set to Italy... Is there a way
to set it to the country selected in the installer?

That's it for now.  Some more testing to do!

Thanks,
Quentin

Hi Free,

the new kernel 2.6.29-rc4-rt2 boots, run and perform very well for my
laptop but if I'm not wrong it has been built with new firewire stack
and both freebob and ffado wants the pld stable one.
The timer frequency is set at 250Hz, in the old times this setting lead
to complaints from some midi software asking for a timer set to 1000Hz.
Maybe it's not more a problem?

All the best,
Joël

I've added these to the makefile for beta 3. Cinepaint will need a
backport, as it's been dropped from Debian.

Cheers!

It's very important we fix that, we need FFADO to work out of the box.

We'll look at that too.

Cheers!

I downloaded and installed 64studio_3.0-beta2_amd64.iso and apart from
the problems below beta 2 looks and feels good so far, as usual with
64Studio. I have Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 motherboard with ATI RD790
chipset and a Phenom CPU. My system works well and pretty much out of
the box with 64studio 2.1,Debian Etch and Lenny, Gentoo, Arch, Fedora,
and even windows. The first 2 problems below also occur in Ubuntu Hardy
and Intrepid so I think are not 64studio problems.

- I didn't see/notice any option to choose where grub installed and it
installed grub into my MBR overwriting my previous grub menu. I know how
to fix this but unless I missed something obvious (this is quite likely
:) ) I think it would be good to make the grub configuration options a
bit more obvious if possible.

- Drive ordering during install is different to ordering on installed
system, leaving me with none of the options on the installer generated
grub menu working. I have a PATA drive which contains all my boot
partitions, and two SATA drives on which all my data is stored. In CMOS
my PATA drive is configured as 1st drive. The PATA drive was configured
as (hd2,5) by the installer but is in fact (hd0,5). I understand the
reasons for this problem and will fix it on my system, but for a newbie
I think it could be very difficult and is definitely not a good first
impression of a newly installed OS.

- I got errors checking md5sum and found I had to change
images/64studio_3.0-beta2_amd64.iso to 64studio_3.0-beta2_amd64.iso in
64studio_3.0-beta2_amd64.iso.md5sum file before it would check correctly
(I guess moving the iso into an images sub-directory would have worked too).

- My system will not complete shutdown or reboot, last message on screen
on reboot is [252.256466] restarting system. I have to power cycle or
use hardware reboot as CAD doesn't work here.

Regards,
Ross.

Maybe some of you recall that I reported a problem with the 2.1
installer on my laptop:
http://www.64studio.com/node/865

I was still having the same problem with the 3.0 alpha installer
(posted on the mailing list in January).

I'm sorry I have to report that installation still fails with this
3.0-beta2 with apparently the same symptom.

I would like to know if there are some tricks to dig out this issue
(e.g. a magic key to switch between consoles or to get a prompt
through which I could check some logs, etc.).

Thank you!

Best regards,
Philippe.
