83 yamaha midnight virago 750???

Hey, I need some help, I recently purchased a 83 yamaha midnight virago 750, and the fellow I bought from said the motor had been changed....I can't find out the year/make,model of the swapped motor.....the engine number is 5E3-001471, and the VIN number from registration is 20Y000516 (which I guess indicates yamaha 750)...however...I don't know for sure if my engine is the one the reg. says it is....doesn't seem to be........also, would this affect the kind of TCI unit I have under the tank....(metal one with pigtail wires, or plastic with plugs and no wires)???.... which on should I need on the 83 yamaha midnight virago 750???......any help would be great.

On an '83 you need the plastic one with plugs and no pigtails.

thanx bill,,,it's me shawn....don't know if you can see it on there...you are invaluable as always....any idea what the engine number matches to?....the bike is still working like a dream...just off of your spark plug suggestion...thanx again.

I am still checking, but it seems the engine was not sold in the USA. Where are you located?
