Hi, maybe someone can give me some insight... I just purchased 2 viragos a 95-1100 and an 87-700. The 700 is is all stock, the 1100 has aftermarket pipes and a "reworked stock carb". Here's my question, both bikes run excellent, but, the 700 seems to have more power . I don't much about yamaha's, but I know something about bikes and the 1100 should have more omphf than it does. Any ideas. The 1100 has Jardine pipes I'm told they look like harley drag pipes... Thanks. Jack

It sounds like it is running very lean. That is a condition that happens when you go to straight pipes or sometimes other aftermarket pipes. There is a rejetting kit from K & L supply that you can get. If you can find the model of the Jardine pipes, Jardine can tell you what jets to use. You can tell if it is running lean by looking at the spark plugs. Plug charts are available on the internet.

That's what I was thinking, the plugs are new and clean so I can't tell yet. But the pipes are loaded with carbon, at first glance I thought maybe just over choked but the prevous owner disconnected the choke cable. I'll contact Jardine and rework the carb after the riding season is over. also, I'll pull the plugs in a week or so and check the condition....

thanks,
Jack

If you have a lot of carbon in the exhaust, that could indicate you have a lot of carbon on the valves as well. If so that could be your loss of power. Lots of carbon in the exhaust is more an indication of running rich. The color of your plugs will tell you after only running a few hours. Do the Jardines have a cross-over pipe or are they just two straight pipes? Does the bike smoke at all?

The plugs aren't that bad after 200+ miles they seem normal. But, I think I found the culprit, the front cyl.started to pop and backfire, spitting out flames. On the way home the bike died, no juice, when I got it home I tried jumping it and started right up still popping. I'll check the voltage just to be sure it's not the battery. My gut tells me it's the voltage regulator, now to find out where it is and then check that, along the way I'll check all the connections to see that there secure. Is there any thing I should know or watch for....

The Jardines are 2 seperate pipes

Take a volt meter and put it across the battery posts with the bike running. Check the out put of the alternator. You should read 13.6 to 14 volts at 3000 RPM. If you are reading that or close, the regulator is OK, check your ground connection to the frame and other wiring connections. Also, make sure your battery is OK. Batteries in Viragos don't do well if they are more than 2 years old.

Ok, voltage regulator is fried... Blistered and ozzing goo...
I checked the resisance to the alt. and I'm getting 0.09 ohms, I think that's within range. Is there another option other than a stock regulator.
Thanks for all the help, this forum has proven to be invaluable.

In the wind...soon

Go to www.bikebandit.com and click on Aftermarket parts. There are two rectifier/regulators available to replace the stock unit.

Problem still persists and reg/rec is overheating. Burns to the touch.

Any ideas

Thanks Jack

Ok, here's what I've got.

Resistance @ alt. wiring is 0.05 ohms, at idle alt puts out 30+/- AC volts, @ 3000 RPMs 60+/- volts, I'll assume it's working fine...

So far I've cleaned up all connections under seat and sprayed wd-40 at all connections. At 2500 rpms battery is getting 14+/- volts, so the system is charging. R/R is still overheating, I tried changing location to get better ground, no difference. Frt. cyl still popping and spitting flames.

Any Ideas...

Jack
