A Tip on Using Bluetooth with Late-Model VX10000 (Voyager)

In March, I had to trade in my original Voyager that I first got last
July, 2008, because several rows of the keyboard illumination lights
had gone intermittent. That phone otherwise seemed to work
flawlessly, including bluetooth; it would always connect with my LG
MGB-100 stereo bluetooth speakers, for example. At the time, that was
the only bluetooth equipment I had.

The replacement phone that I received in early March also connected
to the MGB-100 with no problems and never had a problem connecting to
the speakers whenever I fired them up.

But the USB connector on that 2nd phone came loose from the PC board
and about a month ago, I turned it in. Other than that loose USB
connector, I don't think the phone ever had a problem.

I realized that because I plugged in the USB cable every night to
download using Bitpim, I was putting unnecessary wear and tear on the
USB connector so I soon ordered a cheap bluetooth dongle from e-bay.
However, before it arrived, I discovered that 3rd phone would NOT
connect to my LG MGB-100 stereo speakers, no matter what. When the
dongle finally arrived, I found that my computer easily connected to
the stereo speakers via bluetooth, but it could not find my Voyager;
and my Voyager could not find either the computer nor the speakers.
It appeared something was wrong with the bluetooth on that phone. So
I went back to Verizon and they ordered me still another replacement
phone, which I received last week.

This one initially connected with both the stereo speakers and the
computer with no problem and I happily downloaded my SMS messages for
several nights with no drama. However...

I had also found the "extended life battery" on still another e-pay
website and bought one. Once it came, the problem was to decide which
battery to keep charged each night: my original, or the new extended
life one. That meant I was swapping batteries into and out of my
Voyager as much as several times a day. Normally, I NEVER turn my
phone off... and had never even removed the battery from my first two
phones after first putting it in.

Several nights ago, I found that my computer could not connect to my
4th phone via bluetooth; the error message on Bitpim was that while
the bluetooth port was there (assigned to COM 13), it was not
available until I MADE it available. But my computer said the port
was not only there but available. I couldn't figure it out and
couldn't get Bitpim to connect to COM 13.

Tonight, I remembered an earlier trial I'd conducted with my 3rd
phone, the one that seemed to have NO bluetooth connectivity at all.
While I still had my 2nd phone (with the bad USB connector), I'd had
no trouble getting it to connect to my computer via bluetooth, so I
knew bluetooth was working on my computer. I swapped a fresh battery
into my "new" 3rd phone then tried bluetooth discovery and whaddaya
know.... it found both the computer and the stereo speakers.

But the next night, it was back to its old trix: it couldn't connect
to either the speakers nor the computer.

Well... tonight, I remembered that, as I puzzled over not being able
to get this 4th Voyager to work on bluetooth... so I turned it off,
turned it back on, then ERASED the original computer connection. And
I erased the computer's original connection to the Voyager. Then I
started all over again, having each search for the other. And they
were successful, and I transferred all my SMS files (and more besides).

Moral: I think Verizon, or LG, whichever, has changed something in
the firmware that makes the Voyager extra finicky when it comes to
bluetooth. But for some reason, it is beginning to appear that if you
shut the phone completely off (or remove the battery), it'll reset
it. You might have to erase your old bluetooth connections and start
again, to get it to find the other instruments.

All this has nothing to do with Bitpim but to some, it may appear to,
that's why I thought I'd bring it up here.
