A serious noob question about getting started... iPhone

Hello,

I have followed the roadmap list serve for a month now.  I am still confused on how to get the files compiled and working on an iPhone.  I am aware that there are people out there running it - I am just uncertain on where I need to go to begin - Truth be told - I cannot even locate the files to place them on the file for compiling...

Any assistance the group could provide would be greatly appreciated.

hi seth -- i'm not at all surprised a noob is confused.

firstly, the current roadmap source isn't in a downloadable
tarball, because we haven't done an "official" release in about a
year.  so the source is saved under CVS.  until we do a release
of some sort, you'll need a CVS client to get at it -- most linux
distributions make it easy to get ("apt-get install cvs" or "yum
install cvs") but on windows or a mac you'll have to get guidance
from someone other than me.  once you have the cvs program,
follow the "Newer" link from
    http://roadmap.sourceforge.net/download.html
and follow the instructions you find there.

second, once you have the source, you'll want to look in the
src/doc directory in the file called Platforms.  (someday when we
do a real release, this info will be on the web.) there's a
section in there on the iPhone.

lastly, iPhone support is pretty new.  i've never built it, or seen
it run.  morten bek has contributed the patches to roadmap to make
it work, so i hope he'll have more to say -- like where to get the
compiler, how to do the build, how to install the result on the iphone,
etc.  (morten -- maybe some more of this could go into the Platforms
file?)

hope i haven't scared you off too badly, seth!

Hi Seth,
It's no easy feat to get the crosscompiler toolchain up and running for iPhone firmware 2.x.
I used the guidelines from the following page:
http://www.saurik.com/id/4
by one of the great open toolchain contributors, Saurik.

But even with these guidelines there was quite a bit trial and error to get the thing to work.

My hope is that it will be possible to distribute such a toolchain in the future, but right now I think that it's not possible to distribute it due to legal issues - while it's perfectly fine to build your own.

BUT if you are just interested in running the app - as opposed to hack along on the code yourself - you are very welcome to get a binary version from me. You'll need to unpack and install it on your device through scp/ssh, so you need to be familiar with that.

My plan is that when the next release of Roadmap is out, I'll make a nice iPhone package and see if I can get anyone to include it in 'Installer' or 'Cydia'.

Sincerely,
/morten

Morten,

I am very familiar with SCP / SSH and general binary use.  I would really appreciate an opportunity to look at that binary.  Can you send it to me directly???  Thank you to the group at large for answering my question.  With a binary in hand - I may be able to make some progress...  Roadmap looks like such a promising app for the iPhone platform...

I am interested in the app. Where can I get it? And do you have any
install instructions?

Can you make a package now? It would be great to have a usable
navigation program on the iphone as opposed to the limited stuff they
have now.

Thanks,

Hi Morten,
I just acquired a new iPhone and am jailbroken now - would love to try
roadmap out on it, but do not yet have a build environment set up to build
from source.  Would you mind either sending the .deb (I assume) to me
directly or ?maybe? we could host it on sourceforge?  (that could of course
be a support nightmare for you.... ;P)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Josh,
The last environment I ran RoadMap in on the iPhone was 2.2.1. I'm
afraid the code does not work well with 3.0 yet.
Are you on 2.2.x? If so I can send you a binary. If not I'm afraid
you'll have to wait until I or someone else get time to update the
code.

For almost a year I've been real busy on another iPhone project, so I
haven't been active wrt RoadMap. My hopes are that I'll soon get time
to make an official app store release - since now they accept
navigational apps - but those are just my hopes.

Sincerely,
/morten

Hi Morten,
Thanks for the quick reply.  I am on 3.0, so... bummer :)
Is all of your code checked into CVS or in the process of trying to use the
formal apple process, are you forking/porting (porking? somehow I don't
think that term will be accepted by the OSS community :P)

I also intend to screw around with building iphone apps - undecided whether
I will go the app store or cydia route...

Are you building on linux or mac?  I have linux boxes a-plenty, but if I
need a mac to do the development, that means a purchase :( (or :),
depending on frugal or gadget-happy perspective)

thanks in advance,
Josh

:-) All the code is in CVS along with the rest of the roadmap. The
port is basically a 'cocoa touch'/objective-c wrapper - similar to how
the gtk/qt/win32 frontends are implemented - so no reason to fork or
port the project for that.

Right now it is ok to use open source projects in the app store - at
least if they are still 2.x-compatible -'cause apple lifted the NDA on
2.x. They will do so on 3.x too at some point - but until then it
should be no problem to keep the code 2.x-compatible.

It would really be cool to have RoadMap in the app store. There are
some limitations, however. Only one process, so the plugin
architecture is not compatible with that - and neither is gpsd. But
the rest of the project ought to work.

The roadmap iphone frontend was made on linux with the unofficial SDK/toolchain.
Now that it's possible to use the official SDK (and since I've had a
lot of experience with xcode and iPhone development the past year) I'd
go for trying to make the project build in xcode.

But it should definitely also be possible to get the current project
up and running using the unofficial SDK.
If you don't already have a mac I'd say you should try and get a small
program to run using the unofficial SDK (and I'm afraid I don't know
the current state of that right now. the latest version I tried was
made from a description made by Jay 'Saurik' Freeman).

Sincerely,
/morten
