The first woman to become a capoeira mestre in Brazil, and the current president of the Rio de Janeiro Capoeira Federation, speaks about the difficulties she had to overcome to reach her goals.

Fatima Colombiana (43) was born in Rio de Janeiro and had appreciated capoeira rodas since childhood, but did not practice the art because her mother thought it wasn’t for girls. As a teenager, she went to Belem do Para and in 1970 she started capoeira with Mestre Bezerra, the only mestre in the city. In 1975, she met Mestre Canjiquinha in Sao Paulo and went with him to Salvador. After 5 years of training, she became a mestra.

Discover the benefits that capoeira offers to the bodies and minds of elderly people. Carlos Alberto Rosa (Mestre Rosa) of Grupo Barauna is working with older capoeira students in Mogi das Cruzes, Sao Paulo.

How did you get the idea to teach capoeira to the elderly?

It started because I had many parents of my students who would come and watch the classes, wanting to take up some physical activity – but they thought they could never do capoeira. We had a meeting and agreed that capoeira would be very good for older people, because it could be taught as recreation. So we began a capoeira group with this goal in mind. Today, it has 20 members.
Time you started filling in these questions: 918am
1. What drew you to capoeira? I saw the movie Only the Strong with Mark Dacascos

2. What do you hope you will achieve and have achieved from capoeira? Over the years I have acheived unbelievable flexibility lol. Some would say I have the spine of a shark. but more so I have made unbreakable bonds with some of the greatest people. Family.

3. Can you describe to me how your experience is with capoeira while training? I try to keep an open mind while im training. lately Ive been training alot at home due to monetary and time constraints but its always been positive. Sometimes it can be frustrating though in a group setting but if you keep your head up and realize your all there for eachother then you will always continue to progress.

4. What aspects of capoeira do you enjoy the most? I love all aspects of the art. The flashy acrobatics, the songs and resonating berimbaus...its all bliss to me.

5. What aspects do you dislike the most about capoeira.
This is hard for me to answer. I will think about this and come back to it

6. How do you value capoeira?
Everyone is told that capoeira is life. This is fact. everything in capoeira corresponds to everything outside of capoeira. You never know what to expect. It lives and breathes inside you and everyone you meet. You act and react, you call and respond. You move too quick, you will slip and fall. If you move too slow you or are unsure of yourself in your decision, you will get hit. All just as life.

7. How long will you keep practicing capoeira? Do you consider it a part of your life?
I havent quit yet so I suppose for the rest of my life lol. Very much so...I have a lot that I can thank Capoeira for. More so what I can thank ADB for hehe.

8. What kept you practicing capoeira?
Its a drug. plain and simple.

9. Over the time you’ve practiced, how has capoeira affected your life?
Oddly enough I was quite surprised by capoeira on my 18th birthday. My parents had just separated and as luck would have it I got invited...to my own birthday party! that was the best weekend capoeira gave me. I went to the hills to Mestre Geraldos batizado at his very nice secluded house. Was Pants'd by one of his new Verde students and all around had a great time. This is how my family in capoeira was developed and since then has never let me down.

10. Can you describe to me your experience with capoeira?
Other then the above? Well its nice to know that wherever you go in your travels you will always have a place to stay if you need to. Capoeira is spreading so fast and with everyone knowing everyone...its like one international family. Its different for everybody but to me... It gives you strength and courage to do things that seem out of your reach. It inspires and flows. its really something you have to experience to understand fully.

11. In your opinion what makes a good capoerista? (qualities)
Dedication, the willingness to learn, strength to do, understanding to teach and the ability to sing and play the instruments.

12. What is your approach to learning capoeira? (do you go with it or learn it intuitively?)
good question...I guess i just go with it. Sometimes I try different things I thought of and turn or compare it to capoeira.

13. Can you describe to me how you felt when you first started capoeira?
Very Frustrated lol. when I started there was not a school in sacramento. so everything I learned was from the internet or books...ok and watching Only the strong upteen million times and copying what I saw. there was also a set of videos by Nelson Reis and Joselito Santos made by Panther in the early 80s that I found and worked off that. the history and language I just put 2 and 2 together and wa-lah. It wasnt until mid 90s where a group of us found a willing teacher. He was one of the guys from Fogo na ropa. Studied under Aceituno (rip) followed after his few visits. Tigre, relampago, Angola, Tornado and myself found Galego and there you have it.

14. Do you think you have improved? How much have you improved in capoeira now, compared to when you first started.
Not being in a focused class I think has hindered me alot. Theres also been some life choices I have made that have kept me from progressing further. but from when i first started to now...Oh yeah I have greatly improved.

15. What role do you think capoeira play in the community?
Adds a positive sense of community. Inspires the kids to get out of gangs and into whites lol. It helps by adding something new to express yourself with.

16. What kind of group dynamics does capoeira play in life?
Teamwork and fellowship

Time you stopped: 953am

very cool suggestions, it would be cool if everyone gets a nickname before the batizado. yours should be "scholar", reading these epic novels and such. thats "acadêmico", freetranslation.com helps me out a lot in learning portuguese, spanish, and french. keep the nicknames coming, they might strike a chord with CMG.

So after our discussion about nicknames the other day...

I'm reading a Chinese epic for fun right now, one of the classic greats of eastern literature called "Shui hu zhuan" aka "The Water Margin" or "Suikoden". Think the "Iliad" but asian. This 14th century book became really popular in Japan in the 1800's and inspired a lot of woodblock art which you see often in traditional-style Japanese tattoos.

There are 108 heroes in this book who are the reincarnations of heavenly spirits or earthly fiends...all rogues or criminals or free spirits who are rebelling against a corrupt government and form a renegade band. Most of them have nicknames, some of these types seem to fit with our nickless capoeiristas. Just some suggestions:

1) "tattooed monk" aka Sagacious Lu. Ex-military who kills a criminal with his bare hands, then shaves his head and becomes a buddhist monk to disguise himself from police. This guy reminds me of Jeremy. He's got the monk beads, shaved head, military experience, and his friends call him "killer"...

2) "Flea on a drum" aka Shi Qian. A stealthy burglar who can jump onto roofs. Something about Rigoberto's characteristic ginga...

3) "10 feet of steel" aka Hu San. Female warrior who beats ass with 2 swords on horseback. Siobhan's pretty tall...

4) "Black whirlwind" aka Li Kui. Crude but loyal, a beserker in the battlefield who wields an axe in each hand and essentially goes nuts whenever he's in a fight...

5) "Stumpy Tiger" Wang. This hero wishes he was a ladies man but really just can't get a date...

6) "Marvellous Traveller" or "Magic Messenger" aka Dai Zong. This hero can run amazingly fast...

7) "Timely Rain" or Song Jiang. The humble leader of all 108 heroes, he was a petty clerk at a jail always bailing out wrongly accused people...has magical visions...

8) "Dragon in the clouds" or Gongsun Sheng. Taoist priest able to control the weather...

There are a lot more nicks like "twin-tailed scorpion", "blue-faced beast", "turbulent river dragon", "the hairy pilgrim", "9 dragons", "little whirlwind", "the featherless arrow"...

If anyone's interested in hearing more nicks or suggestions let me know!

I don't want to add to the pile of group emails circulating, but just wanted to say that I support the academy. Sometimes we all need to be reminded just how dreary life would be without things like capoeira and our school.

I really do believe this academy is a unique and shining jewel in the Sacramento area, and we are lucky to have something like this so closeby.

I gladly pay my tuition, and for that very reasonable fee I have something to look forward to on all my days off. In comparison, i have spent that same amount on, and gotten much less enjoyment from:

1) 7 beers in NYC
2) 2 bad haircuts
3) 1/3 of a board exam "study guide"
4) 16 pints of Ben and Jerry's (actually the enjoyment factor is pretty close but capoeira is clearly hella better for me)

Just for perspective, argentine tango festivals-- which include demonstrations and workshops and milongas (the equivalent of our rodas)-- can easily cost twice as much.

I think we should all do our best to support something which adds so much to what sometimes can be a mundane daily existence.

Is Capoeira an "art" opposed to a martial art? Who ever said it was only ritualized combat? Is kung-fu non-martial because it has forms? The forms do not stray from kung-fu but rather focuses on elements that are essential. Make no mistake, a well trained student of kung-fu will utilize movements from those forms to grant you a beat down. Apply the same analogy Capoeira.

example:

I haven't seen Mestre Barrao's son in years. Lets just say he has grown quite a bit since the last time I saw him which ironically was at Berkeley. The last time I saw him play, he was a fairly scrawny teenager and I saw him have the most off the hook game with Mestre Beicoila's son who was also a scrawny teenager at the time. I must be getting old.

nice find.. but however awesome it is watching a capoeirista do well in MMA, i can't help but wonder if it's straying too far from the art, going from ritualized combat to actual combat. then again, during beginners class last night CM Galego while talking about the martial arts aspect of capoeira said that MMA is the future of martial arts..

i'll give it more thought, and it's still a sweet vid, gotta look this guy up..
The movie tracks the brief history of the favelas of Rio and the grass roots effort to combat the violence through organized cultural activities aimed at the youth (batucada, dance, capoeira etc).

This film was just the "tip of the iceberg", when it comes to showing the depth of the issues surrounding poverty in Brazil...but it had great music and I would recommend it to all of my fellow capoeirista's.
