Re: ALT.NET group in PortugalRodrigo:
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your opinion), ALT.NET lacks a centralized formal structure, a secret handshake, or any other trappings of a coherent 'organization' with anything approaching a defined hierarchy to it. To my knowledge, nobody has (yet) sought out an 'errant' group calling itself ALT.NET and sent cease-and-desist letters to them admonishing them for not adhering to 'ALT.NET principles and practices' even as they call themselves 'ALT.NET' :) My advice would be to find several more like-minded people in your region/area and begin the conversation about what interests you. Note that by 'like-minded' I actually mean "with a similar predilection for open-mindedness and an openness to new ideas and a commitment to continuous improvement of themselves and others" rather than "thinks just like me about all things". ALT.NET has (for better or for worse -- the jury is still out IMO) heretofore resisted most efforts to better define itself either in terms of technology, principles, beliefs, values, or otherwise so there is little anyone here can tell to either TO or NOT TO do in order to be 'ALT.NET'. For some history about the way the NYC ALT.NET group got started, a call went out (on this very list, IIRC) for anyone in the area interested in forming such a group. Several people responded, this small core of people met initially at one of our places of work to get to know each other and discuss our various backgrounds (including strengths and weaknesses) and then we began digging into boring logistics issues like "where will we meet?", "how will we determine topics?", and "how will we communicate to our attendees about these things?". None of that, of course is any different probably than forming any other kind of professional user group but that's sort of the point -- organizing such a thing is really no different in re: the logistics issues you would have to deal with in any other meet-regularly-and-keep-in-touch-with-our-members kind of situation. Re: ALT.NET group in PortugalI'd be +1 for that also. Living in Libon ATM.
I don't think a special handshake is required. The mostly a group of people willing to follow the principle set forth by this great group.
