ASEDrive IIIe SC Reader

Hi guys,

I'm new witht his technology, and I'd like to identify a good model of SC reader that I could use for securing some Linux workstations; I'd like to use the Smart Cards in the login process at the workstations, and I'm looking for an unexpensive one that is compatible with the OpenSC software.
After some searches on the web, I've found a model at a good price: ASEDrive IIIe USB V2 Smart Card Reader. From the website, it seems that a Linux driver is available, but I'd like to be sure that it will be possible to use it with OpenSC: could you confirm this?
If it isn't good.. could you suggest me a good product with the same requirements?

About the smart cards, what have I to look for to ensure the compatibility with this reader, or generally, with a particular reader? Is the T=0 / T=1 protocol making the difference?

Thanks for your help and regards,

Livio

can you check with ludovic rousseau. if he lists it as working for his ccid
driver for pcsc-lite, then it should work fine. ccid is the most complete
package of drivers there is.

if not, but the vendor has a binary only driver: only buy
one and test it. myself I don't like binary only drivers and would avoid them
at all costs, but see for yourself.

all readers can do both as far as I know, so that shouldn't matter much.

if you are concerned about speed / user experience: collect some typical tasks
a user might do, setup a demo system and benchmark. different combinations
of card and reader can make a huge difference (e.g. wait 1 second vs. wait 20
seconds).

I already redirected him here :-)

The reader is not CCID compliant.

The manufacturer provides a driver using a BSD-like licence. The
driver is already packages for Debian [1].

I do not have enough experience with this reader/driver to know if it
is good or not. Maybe someone on the list is already using this reader
and can share his/her experience?

I use it => it should work

every standard smartcard should work (more important is the card os for opensc)

I used  asedriveiiie-usb-3.5.tar.bz2 [32 Kb] February 21, 2007 source
package from
http://www.athena-scs.com/downloads.asp with pcsc-lite v. 1.4.99. The
driver compiled and run fine with default options.

There is no official reader driver for OpenCT. Perhaps, if enough people
will demand it, the manufacturer may be able to provide one.

So, remember, that you will need pcscd to be able to use this reader
with OpenSC.

It is good and fast reader.

Thank you guys, I think that I'll go on with this model...
About the Smart Card, I've read in other posts that the Cryptoflex 32K card model should be good, but it's going to be discontinued. Do you know about other cards I could use at a reasonable price?

Thanks again for your great help and regards,

Livio

We switched from Cryptoflex 32K to STARCOS 2.3 without any issue; we didn't change a single line of code in our software project.

Thanks; is this model erasable?
I was looking for an erasable model for testing, and a not-erasable to be released to users...

I bought some cards from them:

http://www.usasmartcard.com/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.browse/category_id,22/Itemid,26/

They didn't have the StarcOS erasable at the time, tough.
