ATP in EnglandGood Morning All,
I received an email from a family in England, in a small village called Upper Swanmore, near Bishops Waltham, near Portsmouth near Southampton. They have a family member with MS, that does not have any active movement of her arms or legs. She is very interested in getting on the computer and investigating other options to improve her quality of life. Does anyone know of an AT center that I could refer this family to? Thanks in advance, Holly Cohen, OTR/L, ATP NYU Langone Medical Center holly.cohen@... ------------------------------------------------------------ This email message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain information that is proprietary, confidential, and exempt from disclosure under applicable law. Re: ATP in EnglandHi,
The places I would start would be: AbilityNet - www.abilitynet.org.uk Communication Matters - www.communicationmatters.org.uk IT can Help - http://www.itcanhelp.org.uk/ Communication Aids Service Southampton General Hospital, Tremona Road, Shirley, Southampton SO16 6YD Tel: 02380 796455 If she has an Environmental Control she may be able to get funding through her local service. ECU systems are free to adults in the UK. St Mary's Hospital Disablement Services Centre Milton Road Portsmouth PO3 6AD Tel: 02392 866444 She might also try a few other local specialist centres (which may not cover her because of their remit) but would be able to give advice for Hampshire. Re: ATP in EnglandDitto to Neil's email. To reinforce: the family should try and pursue contact with services through their local OT or EC service in the first instance, provision of computer access is unfortunately patchy over here though.

Re: ATP in EnglandDear Holly
As suggested earlier, Abilitynet should be fine for impartial assessment of this clients needs for computer access. However, if there were other associated needs e.g AAC, environmental controls or powered wheelchair control, then a more holistic and comprehensive assessment of this client's needs may be beneficial. The NHS (National Health Service) does have a few services in various part of England (e.g. East Kent, Barnsley or Selly Oak) that can provide assessment for all of these aspects of AT under one roof. However, I am not aware of such a service around Portsmouth/Southampton. I do know of an independent AT consultancy based very close to where this client lives (Winchester) : http://at-cs.co.uk/default.aspx . They will ofcourse, charge for their services (unlike the NHS). The first port of call (as Simon et al have already emphasised) may be the OT service based within the clients Health or Social Service authorities. I'd also recommend putting the question to the equally popular British equivalent of this listserver ASSISTECH (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/assistech.html), where you might find an AT professional from the region where this client is based.
