It is true that the word 'centesimus'
is not restricted to the counted objects.
It simply means the hunderdth and not the zeroth.
I see no hint that Gregory knew
chronological centuries with a
fixed beginning. But if we assume this
we must accept that 1601 was considered
as the first year of the 17th century.
