Accept Credit Cards?

Today I was told by a new Federal Government (NIH) client that it would
be much easier for them to pay me for custom development if I accepted
credit card payments. Something about recent changes in how they process
small procurements.

Do any of you currently accept credit card payments? What card companies
offer small vendors the best deals?

PayPal should work for you George. Kind of nice in that you can send a
payment request and it's pretty easy for the end-user.

Beware of PayPal chargeback rules.. they can be pretty arbitrary and
harsh, and I've read some horror stories..

Even worse, ho much do they charge for processing transfers to your
account?

I did accept PayPal for EBay sales and in total it did cost me about
6-7% of the total value.

I like PayPal from the byer side, as seller I do mot accept it anymore.

I do ot know for the US, but here in Germany most large ISPs offer
Payment processing services, or else ust ask your bank!

Cheers

We've used PayPal for 5 years and have never had any issues. For low
volume transactions over the past 12 months, it looks like we pay
around 3.1 to 3.3% in transaction fees. So, for example, if you
collected $150, PayPal would get $4.65.

Officially, PayPal charges 1.9% to 2.9% + .30 USD per transaction. The
more transactions per month and bigger overall balance, the less
PayPal charges.
We wrote a payment gateway in 4D that bypasses PayPal's rather
confusing generic payment screens for a high-volume customer that
accepts around 300 transactions per month. They consistently pay 2.3%
to 2.4% total per transaction. Plus, if they leave a minimum balance
in PayPal's account, they get a little back through a money market
fund - I think it yields around .32%.

Paypal is a little on the expensive side.  We provide merchant accounts at
very low rates, have our own gateway, have 4D code available for easy
integration into your database (you can download the code for review here -
http://wwww.transaxdevelopers.com/4d) and have 4D developers on staff to
help with integration.

If you're interested e-mail me and I can share some info with you and show

George, your bank can likely set you up as a CC "merchant." If that's
impractical (due to low volume), you might check into an EFT setup
into your account. It's pretty straightforward and not much different
to your client than a cc payment. Being the government, they may be
setup to do that as well already.

Thanks Bill, actually, I've been set up for EFT for years, and this is
the way I've been paid by other departments. The new client is in a group
that currently has nobody in the position of procurement, so the
scientists are saddled with this work as well as their other duties. They
can, however, make small purchases with the funds they have available.
For some reason, they are allowed to submit a list of the small purchases
to be paid for with their Government credit cards. I don't fully
understand it, since my other clients just went through the normal
process and I eventually got paid for everything.

Walt,

We are located in Schaumburg, IL (outside of Chicago) and are registered
with Visa/MC through BancorpSouth Bank, Tupelo, MS.  We typically, but not
always use the First Data platform for our merchant accounts.  Keep in mind,
you are not required to have your merchant account through us to use our
gateway.  The gateway is certified with most US processors and a number of
international processors.  As long as your merchant account is on one of the
processors we're certified with, we can plug it into the gateway.  I'd be
happy to provide a demo account if you are interested or answer any
questions.

BTW, Looks like I had an extra "w" in my link - it should be
http://www.transaxdevelopers.com/4d.

Sincerely,
Matt Schwartz

Lyn,

Paypal's discount rate starts at 2.9 and then goes down based on volume.
Our standard rate starts at 2.37%.  However, if a merchant already has a
processing history, we can usually do better than that (and of course,
volume impacts pricing with us as well).  Paypal's pricing structures are
very rigid.  We have the ability to bring in other types of payment
structures (i.e. Cost Plus and ERR programs), which, while slightly more
complicated, usually ends up giving the merchant a significant price
benefit.

In other words, for new merchants, we start at 2.37%, but for merchants who
have a processing history, we customize a pricing plan that will be the most
advantageous to them.

Sincerely,
Matt Schwartz

Matthew,

I have seen your ads on 4DToday, and they look interesting. It would
help if existing 4D customers chimed in here as references.

Thanks.

Mehboob,

I'm glad you liked the 4D Today Ad :-)

I have been a 4D developer since 1991, and grew organically into the payment
processing industry as my clients needed payment solutions.  Most of our
customers are end merchants, and we've only recently made our example code
publicly available and reached out to developers.  I'm not sure how many, if
any, of our current customers are on the 4d_biz list.

If you e-mail me off list (matt@...), I'll be happy to provide you
with references, a demo of our technology, info on our partner program, fill
you in on our background, etc.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Matt Schwartz

Credit card merchant rates are not cheap.  There are ALSO fees all over-
application fee.  Processing fees.  Per-transaction fees.  Monthly
minimums.  Statement fees.  Franchise fees.  Network fees.

Even for vendors that "waive" some or most of the fees, if you were to
compare a universe of vendors for merchant services, when it all settles
down, you'll find out that your total cost of using the service is about the
same in total.

Also, be prepared to have your credit history, your bank history, etc.
scrutinized because the merchant services institution is providing you
credit as well since your customer could issue a chargeback.  There are no
credit card/p-card/GSA cards that do not have this feature.

When it's all said and done, paypal might be cheaper after all.

However, many, many companies now can pay you via ACH - it's a direct
bank-to-bank transaction, which takes care of the whole "small payments"
concern.

Call Visa or Mastercard and find out the merchant processors that they have
on their list.  Local banks can't compete with clearing houses.  They're not
even close.

Good luck, and remember to mark up your future projects with this cutomer to
cover the credit card fees.

Mikey,

You make a great point.  ACH is in most cases significantly less expensive
than credit card processing.  In addition, it is also less risky for the
merchant.  Consumers have a much smaller window of time to contest charges.
Most gateway providers have an ACH partner that they are integrated with.
It is a great option is available.

The only drawback is that many consumers are still weary of providing their
routing/account number.  If you can get through that concern, ACH is a great
way to go.

Sincerely,
Matt Schwartz
