Active Directory Problems...

I recently sent a posting about accessing Active Directory home
directories on the Mac and trying to sync information from the Mac to a
shared server without user intervention, but saw nothing on the
list...am I missing messages, or am I trying to do something that most
people don't do with Macs on Windows networks?

Just curious if I'm venturing into unwise-practices territory here.

You can always check the list archives to see whether or not you're
missing messages:

I think no-one had an answer.

I think no-one had an answer.

We use Portable Home Directories with our desktop machines in a dual
directory (AD-OD aka Magic or Golden Triangle) setup. For more info on
this, check out afp548.com and search on those terms. But, for my Mac
portables on campus, I use rsync, shell scripts, public key auth, and
cron to back them up on a set schedule. The portables use mobile network
accounts, bound only to AD (802.1X at the loginwindow). Portables have a
tendency to sleep as they move about, but what doesn't get caught one
hour will eventually on the next run. Our OS X file server runs the
rsync script and my portable users never have to do anything (just know
that it occurs). The users can mount the sharepoint where their backup
folder resides and see what's getting backed up. The script will email
me if it doesn't reach a portable, but I only investigate if it
consistently misses backups (after I make sure the user isn't off-site
on vacation, travel or the like). The only problem I have with it is
when DHCP/DNS re-uses an IP address with another machine of my mine
within my pool of portable users. Then, I just edit .ssh/known_hosts
file on the server to clear it up. Lastly, I use an exclude items file
with rsync and only backup the user's desktop and documents folders. Let
me know if you want more info this. HTH
