Active4D v5.0r11 has just been released. This is an important bug fix
release. All Windows users using non-English systems should
immediately upgrade, as previous versions were preventing the 4D Num()
command from properly parsing real numbers.

[ANN]Restful Active4D

Restful Active4D is a set of libraries that provides yet another way of developing web applications using Active4D.

It can almost be considered a plug-in to Active4D/fusebox in that it uses Active4D and fusebox libraries to create an application and development environment patterned after Ruby on Rails.

I make this announcement with the caveat that this approach may not be useful to many in the community! I have made a conclusion that the majority of the Active4D users are just adding a web presence to a 4D client/server environment. My assumption is that the web presence is mainly shopping-cart type applications and that most of the management of the database is done in the client/server environment. Restful Active4D deals mainly with management type applications. If you have not tried to put management applications on the web, Restful Active4D may provide you a shortcut way of implementing those applications.

If you have not tried fusebox, Restful Active4D provides a "generation" application that will create restful fusebox circuits for existing database tables. The requirements are: Active4D 4.5, 4D 2004, and tables must have a unique long integer ID.

The demo is just another version of Aparajita's Active4D demo and is available at:

Don't be alarmed by the domain name! There is a short explanation on the demo home page. The demo is running on my laptop, but should be available most of the time. The demo provides more details of what Restful Active4D is and how it works. There is also a screen cast that shows the generation of Active4D's vendors/ingredients/units demo application from scratch - in about 5 minutes!

QUERY BY FORMULA

Hello,

In v4.5 QUERY BY FORMULA was implemented internally and allowed you to
use Active4D variables and methods in the expression. In v5 QUERY BY
FORMULA is now executed within 4D's context, which means it will
execute on the server at full speed.

For those who have existing code that used QUERY BY FORMULA with
Active4D variables and/or methods, I have written the equivalent of
the v4.5 version as a library method:

Add that method to a4d.utils, it will be included in the next release.
You can then change your QUERY BY FORMULA calls if necessary to
a4d.utils.queryByFormula. The first parameter has to change to a
pointer to the table, and the expression has to be made into a string.
If you need to reference local variables, you have to put them in a
collection and pass that as the third parameter.

So this:

$maxLength := 7
QUERY BY FORMULA([mytable]; length([mytable]name) <= $maxLength)

becomes this:

$c := new collection("maxLength"; 7)
a4d.utils.queryByFormula(->[mytable]; "length([mytable]name) <=
$context{\"maxLength\"}"; $c)

Note that within the expression, you always refer to the passed
collection as $context.

Virtual Host Problem

I'm updating my database to V11 and A4D V5 and am having a problem
getting the virtual host file to work. I noticed the default web path
has changed from just "<default>" to "<default>web", but otherwise the
virtual host file appears work exactly the same as the previous
versions. My actual virtual hosts file has several different sites, but
for trouble shooting purposes, I'm using the VirtualHosts.ini file
included with the download, and adding just one line:

//IP Address Hostname[:port] Language Root
Default
* * *
* test.html

If I manually add test.html to the end of my domain name the page loads
fine, but otherwise I get a 404. If I update Active4d.ini to include
test.html as a default page, the page loads by just using the domain
name. It seems to me the virtualhosts.ini file isn't being used.

Is there an easy way I can confirm A4D is using my virtualhosts.ini
file? What stupid thing did I forget to do to cause this problem!?

V11.5 Server running on XPsp3, just download latest A4D files this morning.

utf-8 project

Hello

I have changed my whole project to utf-8.
On IE 6 then I had a problem, with javascript. There was a (very old) js-file which was mac os roman encoded with a view special chars in it. TThere were no problems until today.
Now after change the webpage to utf-8, I think the browser thought, this file is utf-8 too, and did stop with java-script alerts.
After change the file to utf-8, all did work.

So be careful, when change your projects. Try with IE 6 even if you hate it.

Upload files - wrong date

Using 4D 2003, 4D Client as server, A4D 4.0.2... Mac OS X... Safari & Firefox... I have searched the archives for an answer already and came up blank.

I would like to upload a file (which I can do now) and have the created & modified dates and times remain the same as the original files. The files have the time and date of the upload.

I have tried using Copy Upload and the contents of the A4D_Upload blob and the file A4D saves in Active4D Uploads briefly (upload_00000001.suffix). Nothing seems to work.

Since this project is for a law office, it would be nice to have the dates correct when stored and retrieved... they are kind of funny that way.

Problem with character en dash

Hello

I am a little bit confused.
With this example the character äöü are ok, but the – or en dash or – or key [alt -] are not ok.
The browser sends cont=%E4%96
And in A4D_GetHttpBodyCallback the blob has the same value.

On Active4D 4.5 and 4D 2004 all was OK.
Now in Active4D 5 and 4D11 I have a problem with en dash.

When write to the response buffer it's ok ("–")
But if a save this value to database or write it to the Active4D console, the character has a total wrong value.

New Global Collection, Get Collection Array

In need of a "persistent" array in my A4D application, in the Active4D.4dl
library in the method "On Application Start", I create a new global
collection into which I store 9 arrays. The handle for this collection I
keep in a inter-process variable <>nGCRef.

Later in the application I use <>nGCRef to Get Collection Array.

The handle is invalid. The array is inaccessible.

The documentation reads: Be sure to store the handle in a place where you
can retrieve it later, such

as in the globals collection.

I did 1 better by storing the handle in a 4D IP Var. Since I do not
understand how storing a reference to a global collection in the global
collection is accessible without knowing the reference, I did not store the
reference to the global collection in a global collection.

What's wrong with this picture?

Please advise!

JSON, UK Pound Symbol and ISO-8859-1

Hi Folks,

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I'm using a combination of Active 4D 4.5r1, JSON and the ExtJS library.

I'm having a little problem with the UK pound symbol, specifically the
encoding of the symbol in the AJAX request.

On normal HTML forms with Active4D, if I specify the encoding method
as ISO-8859-1, the HTML form displays the UK pound symbol properly,
and also when the form is submitted it is received into 4D as a pound
symbol. All good :)

However when I'm using AJAX and JSON I have problems with the
encoding. Specifically it's encoding the £ (Uk pound sybmol) as
£ I've played around with calling:

set content charset("ISO-8859-1")

In my script which calls the JSON library, and using firebug I can see
that the right character set is used, however is the JSON library is
still encoding the pound as £

I've also tried editing the JSON library, but I'm really just shooting
in the dark there ;)

I found the problem.

I was passing a session item value to a 4D method that required a numeric
parameter. The session item was not net initialized so it was passing a
string.

When running source code this error does not appear.

I've read the docs on On Web Connection in the 4D LRM and in A4D's
Reference.

I seem to remember working through this problem in the past. It may have to
do with calling 4D methods which may or may not return a $0.

I've tried many things.

If you have insight, please share it with me.

On Web Connection, Invalid Parameter in an execute command

Using 4D as the web server

Copied the "On Web Connection" method from the A4D Shell for 4D

Installed all the core groups

Everything else works fine in source code.

Compiled I get "Invalid Parameter in an execute command, On Web Connection."

Using 4D's trace debug log I can see that the very first line shows
something is undefined:

Nothing else in the debug trace log for OWC shows an error.

This seems like it should be really simple.

Extra file in R7 Active 4D folder

Saw that R7 was posted and did a compare on the Active4D folder to
merge changes into our applications. There is an extra file in there
(Archive.zip) that contains an additional debug and json libs when
exploded. I imagine it was not intended for that to be in there in
the release.

I attempted to enter this via in the Issue Tracker, but I get an error when
signing in anonymously.

In a4d.json.a4l, method addSelection, line 239

$inMap{field name($tableNum; $i)} := field($tableNum; $i)

The "field name" command returns a blank if the field has been deleted, and
a blank is not a valid key for $inMap.

Suggested fix, replace line 239 with:

if(length(field name($tableNum; $i))>0)
$inMap{field name($tableNum; $i)} := field($tableNum; $i)
end if

For those of you who want to put a (*cough*) real web server in front

Installation instructions for db method On Web Connection

Thought I'd post here before reporting it in the bug tracker.

Maybe I'm missing something, but following the 5.0mc1 instructions for
a4d installation to a new and existing database, I see no reference to
calling the A4D_OnWebConnection method from the database method On Web
Connection. I see the comment explaining what to do in the
A4D_OnWebConnectionmethod, but it is not in the docs (I don't think).

I knew what to do cause we're upgrading a db, but new users may be
confused as to why A4D doesn't work.

Did I miss something? Or should I report it to Mantis?

periodic task library

Hi,

I had the occasion to need periodic tasks for a project I'm working
on, and came up with a generic a4d.tasks library. Here is the current
design:

create(inMethodToExecute; inPeriodInMinutes {; inData {; inLimit}}) ->
longint
- inMethodToExecute must be a globally accessible Active4D library
method with the following signature:

method "myTask"($inId; $inAction; $ioData)
- inId is the task id
- inAction is "init", "exec", or "deinit"
- ioData is the data that was passed into 'create task'
- you may call 'delete($inId)' within this method to cause the task to
be deleted on the next run

- inPeriodInMinutes is how long between calls, >= 1. No guarantee the
task will be run that often, it is actually the minimum number of
minutes between calls, since the queue is only checked every 10 seconds
- inData if passed and non-zero must be a *global* collection, it will
be cleared with 'deep clear collection' when the task is deleted
- inLimit if passed is the number of times you want the task to be
executed, after which it will be removed, < 0 means unlimited

delete(inId)
- remove the task and deep clear its data
- if called from a currently running task, marks it for deletion on
the next run

dump
- Dumps the task list to the A4D console

I would like any comments or suggestions before I release it as part
of the Active4D standard libs. The task runner will be a 4D method
running in a separate process that calls a4d.tasks.execute every 10
seconds.

Typically in one of your libraries, you would do something like this:

4D/A4D Crashing

There has been an ongoing problem crashing 4D in the SSL component, related
to MS IE 7 & 8.

Has anyone found a way to solve this problem other than migrating to Windows
for the A4D server?

Simple json parse

Here goes Steve again with another piece of hare-brained code. I have
a use for it, maybe someone else could use it.

Several weeks ago I asked about a json parse routine - something that
would convert json to a collection. I wrote one several years ago, but
since I don't use json with javascript, I'm not sure it had a use
outside of mine. I was also not very happy with the complexity of the
converted code.

My use of json is to serialize some form data and I didn't need every
possible type(text!). I had done the serialization before with tagged
text(xml) and collection or object tools blobs, but was looking for
something more generic and better than xml.

jsonParseSimple is an Active4D method that will convert a json object
to a collection. It's big limitation is that it will only handle
objects/collections and text arrays. Again, for me, that is not a
limitation - that's all I need. Code below and more meaningless
comments below that;

Several years ago I was pressured into developing an on-line job
application for our customers. This happened when our 4D structure was
in the middle of a major change and I could not get the structure
changed. I had a couple blob and text fields available to me, so I
wrote the application and stored the data in the blobs. This was
supposed to be temporary because someone else was going to develop a
RoR application.

The RoR application never made it. After I retired, I experiment with
the RoR application and got it working using some tables. It turns out
that the major part of the job application process is asking a bunch
of multiple choice question: "How many years of welding experience do
you have?". Since those questions were different for every job, I
still ended up using json to store the raw input data . Only the
Assessments(questions and answers) and the scoring results use a table
structure.

Since they are still not ready to convert to RoR, I replicated my
experiment in Active4D. The above json object is an example of what I
created using the form data and some results from processing the data
(how they scored on the assessment, etc). It is just a bunch of ids
pointing to the questions and answers. In case you have not noticed,
this will serialize nested collections, something "collection to blob"
will not do.
