Invalid Parameters in an execute command

I found the problem.

I was passing a session item value to a 4D method that required a numeric
parameter. The session item was not net initialized so it was passing a
string.

When running source code this error does not appear.

I've read the docs on On Web Connection in the 4D LRM and in A4D's
Reference.

I seem to remember working through this problem in the past. It may have to
do with calling 4D methods which may or may not return a $0.

I've tried many things.

If you have insight, please share it with me.

Using 4D as the web server

Copied the "On Web Connection" method from the A4D Shell for 4D

Installed all the core groups

Everything else works fine in source code.

Compiled I get "Invalid Parameter in an execute command, On Web Connection."

Using 4D's trace debug log I can see that the very first line shows
something is undefined:

-- Startup on Friday, November 13, 2009 02:01:08 PM (192430205) --

5 [15] Log level: 2

5 [15] cmd: Undefined (* ON WEB CONNECTION).

5 [15] cmd: MESSAGES OFF (* ON WEB CONNECTION).

5 [15] cmd: READ ONLY (* ON WEB CONNECTION).

5 [15] cmd: ON ERR CALL (* ON WEB CONNECTION).

Nothing else in the debug trace log for OWC shows an error.

This seems like it should be really simple.

Extra file in R7 Active 4D folder

Saw that R7 was posted and did a compare on the Active4D folder to
merge changes into our applications. There is an extra file in there
(Archive.zip) that contains an additional debug and json libs when
exploded. I imagine it was not intended for that to be in there in
the release.

Bug Report, a4d.json.a4l addSelection Method

I attempted to enter this via in the Issue Tracker, but I get an error when
signing in anonymously.

In a4d.json.a4l, method addSelection, line 239

$inMap{field name($tableNum; $i)} := field($tableNum; $i)

The "field name" command returns a blank if the field has been deleted, and
a blank is not a valid key for $inMap.

Suggested fix, replace line 239 with:

if(length(field name($tableNum; $i))>0)
$inMap{field name($tableNum; $i)} := field($tableNum; $i)
end if

Installation instructions for db method On Web Connection

Thought I'd post here before reporting it in the bug tracker.

Maybe I'm missing something, but following the 5.0mc1 instructions for
a4d installation to a new and existing database, I see no reference to
calling the A4D_OnWebConnection method from the database method On Web
Connection. I see the comment explaining what to do in the
A4D_OnWebConnectionmethod, but it is not in the docs (I don't think).

I knew what to do cause we're upgrading a db, but new users may be
confused as to why A4D doesn't work.

Did I miss something? Or should I report it to Mantis?

periodic task library

Hi,

I had the occasion to need periodic tasks for a project I'm working
on, and came up with a generic a4d.tasks library. Here is the current
design:

create(inMethodToExecute; inPeriodInMinutes {; inData {; inLimit}}) ->
longint
- inMethodToExecute must be a globally accessible Active4D library
method with the following signature:

method "myTask"($inId; $inAction; $ioData)
- inId is the task id
- inAction is "init", "exec", or "deinit"
- ioData is the data that was passed into 'create task'
- you may call 'delete($inId)' within this method to cause the task to
be deleted on the next run

- inPeriodInMinutes is how long between calls, >= 1. No guarantee the
task will be run that often, it is actually the minimum number of
minutes between calls, since the queue is only checked every 10 seconds
- inData if passed and non-zero must be a *global* collection, it will
be cleared with 'deep clear collection' when the task is deleted
- inLimit if passed is the number of times you want the task to be
executed, after which it will be removed, < 0 means unlimited

delete(inId)
- remove the task and deep clear its data
- if called from a currently running task, marks it for deletion on
the next run

dump
- Dumps the task list to the A4D console

I would like any comments or suggestions before I release it as part
of the Active4D standard libs. The task runner will be a 4D method
running in a separate process that calls a4d.tasks.execute every 10
seconds.

Typically in one of your libraries, you would do something like this:

4D/A4D Crashing

There has been an ongoing problem crashing 4D in the SSL component, related
to MS IE 7 & 8.

Has anyone found a way to solve this problem other than migrating to Windows
for the A4D server?

Simple json parse

Here goes Steve again with another piece of hare-brained code. I have
a use for it, maybe someone else could use it.

Several weeks ago I asked about a json parse routine - something that
would convert json to a collection. I wrote one several years ago, but
since I don't use json with javascript, I'm not sure it had a use
outside of mine. I was also not very happy with the complexity of the
converted code.

My use of json is to serialize some form data and I didn't need every
possible type(text!). I had done the serialization before with tagged
text(xml) and collection or object tools blobs, but was looking for
something more generic and better than xml.

jsonParseSimple is an Active4D method that will convert a json object
to a collection. It's big limitation is that it will only handle
objects/collections and text arrays. Again, for me, that is not a
limitation - that's all I need. Code below and more meaningless
comments below that;

Several years ago I was pressured into developing an on-line job
application for our customers. This happened when our 4D structure was
in the middle of a major change and I could not get the structure
changed. I had a couple blob and text fields available to me, so I
wrote the application and stored the data in the blobs. This was
supposed to be temporary because someone else was going to develop a
RoR application.

The RoR application never made it. After I retired, I experiment with
the RoR application and got it working using some tables. It turns out
that the major part of the job application process is asking a bunch
of multiple choice question: "How many years of welding experience do
you have?". Since those questions were different for every job, I
still ended up using json to store the raw input data . Only the
Assessments(questions and answers) and the scoring results use a table
structure.

Since they are still not ready to convert to RoR, I replicated my
experiment in Active4D. The above json object is an example of what I
created using the form data and some results from processing the data
(how they scored on the assessment, etc). It is just a bunch of ids
pointing to the questions and answers. In case you have not noticed,
this will serialize nested collections, something "collection to blob"
will not do.

Memory leaks

Hi,

I am now doing extensive leak testing of Active4D. While there are
some leaks in Active4D, unfortunately I am finding far more leaks in
4D. I am informing them of the leaks and hopefully they will be fixed
in the next hotfix release.

I probably won't release a v5.0b4 until this weekend, I would like to
finish the leak testing before I do.

Important warnings

Hi,

This was not mentioned in the current documentation addendum:

- Do not attempt to save a collection or session in v5 to a blob or
document and then load it in v4.5. Saved collections are not backwards
compatible.

Also, until b3 is released, do NOT flush the Active4D library with the
A4D FLUSH LIBRARY plugin command.

Activ4d used memory in Active4D 5

Hello Aparajita

I'm looking to the memory which is used from 4D. (I had a lot of
problems in 4D 2004, that to much memory was eating each request).
Is there a way to find out, how much memory Active4D uses?
Size of current request Collections
Size of global Collections
Size of total Active4D Memory used

And could it be, that Active4D still leaves collection in memory,
which are not used

And if I do this:

$cTest:=new collection

$cTest:=new collection
....

Is the first collection deleted from memory? The same in global
collections?

App Crashing on 4D Init during startup

HI,

So I seem to be having an out of the ordinary experience so I have
been trying to sort it out on my own but without luck.

When my application executes the command A4d Init during startup it
crashes. I have traced the entire A4D_Startup method and it's while in
A4D_Init and it calls A4D Init that it crashes.

I have downloaded Hot Fix 6 and am using Internet Commands from that
DMG as well. I am using 5.0B2 of A4D. I have replaced my Active4D
folder with the latest A4D folder (unmodified). I have just
downloaded the latest copy of the Shell as of 10/4/09. In installing
the shell I actually deleted the existing folders from my application
and then copied them from the shell.

I do have one question about the hot fix versions. While I am sure I
am running the application copied from that DMG I don't see any
reference to the hotfix when getting info about the application.
Should I see this and if so where?

I am not sure what I am missing or what might be causing this
behavior. I can only assume it's something in my app. but I am not
sure where to be looking at this point. Any ideas?

CUD Problem

I implement a cud process similar to what is in the documentation
describing cud using a local method as the processor and think I found
a minor problem or I don't understand something.

My incomplete local method with some debugging:

What I noticed is that my record was not being updated, (action =
update) but it was returning "success". I put the writebr in and saw
that it only did the query phase and the cleanup phase. That pointed
out that I had an error in my query as it reported missing out of
query. It then it fell through to the cleanup phase, which was
successful and the overall result was success.

Looking at the code for cud, that is exactly what will happen if your
processor does not respond to the cleanup phase.

" If you are not using transactions, most of the time you will ignore
this phase."

That leads me to believe that:

1 - You can't ignore the cleanup phase since any error would be
overwritten in the cleanup phase if not handled.
2 - If the status is not success before calling the cleanup phase, it
should report that result.

A4D v5 & Safari - multiple sessions being created for each .a4d call

Just wanted to check whether anyone else has come across this before I
register it as a bug.

The problem:

When using Safari 4.x (mac) and Active4D v5ß2, every call to an .a4d
page creates a new session.

I've tried Firefox 3.5.3 (mac) and everything works properly i.e only
1 session is created.

Let me know if anyone has seen this and if you have any suggestions.
As it is, its a show stopper for me.

Accessing custom constants

Hi,

One thing I did not document in the Addendum -- you cannot access
custom 4DK# constants directly in Active4D v5. However, I have written
a 4D method that will convert custom constants to an Active4D library
that you can import, which allows you to use your custom constants
with no code changes.

If you download the plugin again, you will see a PDF document called
"convert_constants.pdf" and an export of the method called
"convert_constants.c4d". Please read the documentation, it's very
simple to use.

Summit demo

Due to unavoidable and very unfortunate circumstances, I will not be
able to attend the Summit this year.

4D has very kindly given me a slot to do a 1 hour Summit session on
Active4D on Tuesday, October 6th at 5pm. I would be very grateful if
