Ads in Nabble posts

Now days the first message in a thread has an ad appended to it. Seems it needs to be a little less in your face as it looks like it is from the poster. There is a centered ad at the bottom of the page. Maybe ads could show up on the right side or under the first post in a special place a little different color, light gray, with an advertisement message sort of like the one at the bottom of the page. I have had users start complaining. I understand that Nabble needs to make money to fund this service, and I completely agree with that. I'm just suggesting it be a little more out of the post and clearly an ad from Nabble.

I might suggest putting a horizontal rule between posts and ads.

Wade, if you want an ad-free option, I might recommend migrating to Nabble 2. Have you considered this yet? Nabble 2 is superior in most ways. The only real drawback that comes to mind is that child forums can't have multiple parent forums anymore. That's not really so bad, though—it's just a different style.

I don't know if they're planning ads in Nabble 2, but they're not there now. Maybe this is to encourage everyone to migrate.

Okay, I guess that I'm so new to this that I have to ask....I did see the link ads at the bottom of your above post.  And yet, when I visit any of the embedded site examples on here, I didn't see any ad links on any of those sites.

And just for giggles I went to another site (where I'd first seen Nabble in use, which is what got me here) and nowhere in any of their forum threads or messages do I see ads regardless of whether the message is the first in a thread or otherwise.

So are there in fact ads but they are somehow turned-off on these sites?

The fact you saw the ad should be proof there are ads. Whether they are generated when posts are generated from other sites or not I have no idea. The first post in this thread was created directly on Nabble.

After further study, here is the way it is working. If you view a thread in threaded or chronological view then each message has the ad at the bottom. If you view it in the "All Messages" view then you will only see the ad after the first message.

There is then the ad at the very bottom of Nabble pages.

As it relates to the ads within messages, it seems those ads should be targeted to the audience. For instance, hair treatment sounds more appropriate for medical forums or something like that. Programming and development environments, computers, etc would seemingly fit better in the NetBeans, Java, etc forums.

Too, the ads should not look as if the message poster submitted the ad. It should be clear that is an ad generated by Nabble. What if the ad looking like it came from the poster contains subjective material or some competing companies products and folks think the person posting the message sent the content? That can cause some problems, and should be addressed.

The new ads on the Nabble website are just an experiment -- soon we will change them to look more like ads instead of text from posts. Only the ads at the very bottom of pages are stable (those that point to the LightInTheBox website).

If you want to get rid of ads, just go to Nabble2. Nabble2 is faster, better and much more supported than Nabble 1 (this server).

You are right, Cordilow, Nabble2 is the right place for new forums. We don't plan to have ads on Nabble2 any time soon (maybe never, if we can make money using other ideas that we have).

Also, see my answer to Wade for the ads details.

Can we move current forums to Nabble2? If so will they show up in Nabble1, or will there be some link remaining?

Thanks,

Wade

You have to let us know if you want your forums migrated to Nabble2. After the migration, links on Nabble1 will redirect to the right URL on Nabble2. For example, visit:
http://www.nabble.com/OSGeo.org-f18127.html
http://www.nabble.com/-OSGeo---304%3A-Usermap-for-OSGeo-wiki-tp20146107p20146107.html
Note that you will end up on the n2.nabble.com server (not www.nabble.com).

For now, big migrations must wait a little bit because we are finishing the distributed code on Nabble2, which will be scalable and all servers will behave a just one system. We don't want too much load on the n2 server for now.

I suppose the NetBeans.org forums fit into that large migration. Is that so? Anyways, I'll check out Nabble2 and if we are able to move them over maybe we'll do it then. I don't have time to check them out today though, but will very soon. Thank you for your help. Nabble is just great.

Hugo,

What do I need to do to move the netbeans.org forums to n2? Is it good enough to just write you here? Will my account be moved there too or also, or do I need to create one first? Anyways, I would like to move them to n2 as the n2 forums are the default ones searched from the main page now, so it seems to make sense they be in nabble2 now.

Thanks,

Wade

Hi Wade. Sorry, we have to wait a little bit more until we release the n3 server. But people can still find the netbeans mailing list archive from google. I will let you know when we are ready.
