Hello all,

I noticed some non-blocking errors in the code of chatterbean, which make it GTK-dependant even in console mode. Also, it doesn't work with Gnu Classpath rather than sun JDK.
Therefore i add to make some adjustments in the code which now seems to work properly. How can I submit these fixes to the community, and have them integrated in a new version of chatterbean ?

Regards,

This is very misleading. Actually, it is not what the guy asked for. I think he was asking for a "stand-alone" integration into WordPress, not a widget that connects directly to your web site.

I agree with the other guy. It would be cool to have a "stand-alone" widget that would connect to Program-O or Alice on a our own server.

As much as I appreciate tulerpeton's work (it's outstanding, kudos to you), it would be great to have a WordPress integration to our own "stand-alone" install on "our own server". :)
> Hi Brian, what can you do with the bot in wordpress?

WordPress, as many of you no doubt know, started as a blog system, but

It uses "widgets" to plug in extra functionality, from displaying the
WordPress' ease of use, I think an AIML chatterbot widget that is
stupidly simple to install would be great to increase the number of
people aware of AIML, and hopefully get a few people interested in
making better and better chatterbots.

My idea is to provide a basic bot package that is easy to use, easy to
modify, and free.

Of course, it doesn't take much to embed a basic bot into WordPress if
you know a little PHP, and I've done exactly that here:

http://sandbox.datasquire.net/wordpress/

What I'd be interested in working on is integrating the bot into
WordPress on the back end. The plugin would utilize WordPress' paths,
SQL settings, etc. A simple web based control panel would allow the
botmaster to set the usual variables. Ultimately, an integrated AIML
editor would be nice, but that's a lot more work. A way to upload AIML
files and get the bot to learn them would be sufficient for now.

At the moment, my sandbox installation is just an iframe with a
variation of ProgramE's talk.php reformatted for the tiny space.

Something as simple to install as a WordPress widget that is also free
would be an excellent introduction to people unfamiliar with
chatterbots, and could easily be used as both a starting platform and a
teaser for the commercial bots out there. Putting links to commercial
bot makers in the admin interface would be very easy to do and could
boost sales for the providers.

Have you ever wanted to create your own totally unique custom bot
character, as smart as ALICE, but with a completely different
personality? Where do you start? It took us over ten years to build up
the contents of the ALICE brain, but now your creative team can do it
in about two weeks. We've put together a bot brain with blank
templates. You fill in the answers.

The ALICE A. I. Foundation is offering a completely upgraded product,
the Superbot 2.0, that helps you create a totally unique custom bot
personality for your web site or application. The Superbot 2.0 offers
you the following:

 1. Top 10K AIML Categories with blank responses: We've created an
AIML set with input patterns and blank responses. Use this AIML set if
you want to create a totally custom bot from scratch.
 2. 20K Safe AIML Reductions: AIML uses "reductions" to divide up
and simplify inputs, and to link synonyms together. The "Safe" AIML
reductions are designed to work with any bot. The Safe AIML Reductions
save you from having to write thousands of AIML catgeories.
 3. Top 10K AIML Categories with ALICE responses: The Top 10K most
activated AIML categories with the original ALICE bot responses. This
set can be modified easily to quickly create a new bot personality.
 4. Top 10K AIML Categories split into "Atomic", "Wild" and
"Reductions": "Atomic" categories are ones with no wild cards in the
patterns, and no reductions in the response. "Wild" categories are
ones with one or more wildcards in the pattern, and no reductions in
the response. "Reduction" categories are all the ones with AIML
reductions. This set helps you divide up the work of creating your
custom chat bot.
 5. Free Riot Software SAE AIML Spreadsheet Editor: The Simple AIML
Editor is a spreadsheet-oriented AIML editor for Windows that provides
all the capabilities you need to create your bot with the Superbot
AIML files.

The Superbot 2.0 is available now for $999.

"an interesting resource...a decent value for such data."--Andrew
of the Superbot for only $199, if you previously purchased the
Superbot-10K from the ALICE A.I. Foundation.

I have a strange and unusual problem!

I've inherited an AIML based chatbot which I've poked, prodded and generally cajoled into interfacing with one of the browser-based games I frequent. She can read chat and respond, and she can perform a few functions within the game. It's a handy thing to have :)

The problem is that one of the items in the game generates a code string when you're wearing it which looks *exactly* like AIML comment code - <!--viva-->. When the bot encounters someone wearing this item, she ignores them completely and doesn't parse any of their messages due to this comment code. She sees it in her logfile as:

Denarius: <!--viva--> Robot, are you awake?

and so completely ignores it, since the comment code breaks up the chat into fragments she's designed to ignore for robustness. Without the item she sees:

Denarius: Robot, are you awake?

and responds accordingly. Is there any way I can bypass comment coding and have her recognise and disregard the item's code, or am I going to have to find a different language to code her brains in?
> Hi
>
> Cyc has a super comprehensive Nth order predicate logic reasoning engine.
> that
> if you want to build it yourself
> it will cost you more than 20 years of work of 80 high salary computer
> scientists and cognitive experts, etc. you work out the cost
>
> thanks the killers (pentagon) who paid for it and Dr. Lenat who organized
> it.
>
>
> this is free
> he is giving it away free
> ================================
>
> also it has a database of several million statements
> he is not giving away this free
>
> he is giving away several thousands sentences free (i guess 60,000)
>
> this is also very costly if you want to build yourself
> =================================
>
>
> but the good part is that
> you can fill it with what ever you want yourself
> so
>
> you are ALREADY a multi millionaire having that software
>
> Although i do not think any dairy will give you a bag of popcorn with
> those POTENTIAL millions.
> ==================================
>
> have a LISP day (i mean CycL)
> Shahin
>

Shahin,

So assuming that the Cyc engine and several million statements are as
valuable as suggest.

Where are the commercial applications that have been developed on top of
them?

I imagine that there are a few black ops applications that the government
has spent a great deal of our tax dollars on but where are the commercial
applications.

I have heard that Cyc has had several corporate sponsors in the past but
what was the return on their investment?

Why not create something like what Wolfram is releasing in Alpha but based
on Cycs several million fact knowledge base?

This is what I am unable to understand.

At one time everyone was patient and hopeful about what Cyc would produce.
Myself included.

But years later we still do not even see a rudimentary chatbot based on it
surpassing single creator entries like Alice in the Turing competition.

Gary

My understanding was that the Cyc that is made available to the public in
this format is just a small subset of the total Cyc knowledge base.

So what's the point if they're if they're only giving away the real Cyc's
mentally challenged little brother?

It seems to me they are just giving away enough to drum up additional
financial sponsors instead of going Open Source and creating a Cyc community
which could further the project's goals without sucking off the government
and corporate teat.

Hi Eric,

Many thanks for your reply, and glad someone alerted you to this thread. Also thanks for the advice on your experiences with AIML etc. Someone emailed me a copy with your article that he had. The version he sent me was 29 pages long so I have no idea if that was the full one. I spent some time trying to find it online to no avail. Dr Wallace (ALICE) has a defunct link on his website to this article too, so I'm sure he would appreciate a copy.

While things may have moved on a little in computing power since your work, your findings re AIML and DB's are very interesting and relevant. Have you come across this site: http://www.texai.org/blog/about/texai-project ?

The aim is to release this on 23rd June (Turing's birthday). It combines Wikipedia on top of Cyc with a chatbot on top of that. There are of course a lot of claims for what it is supposed to achieve, but this is somwhat near what I had in mind. In fact as it is open source, the databases are released as RDF so could be quite useful.

However, my idea was to use AIML and OpenCyc - probably as separate databases to power a chatbot. I or rather we, need all related software to be installed in one computer, but like you are doing, pull in info not stored as required from the internet.

The idea behind this approach is that it should make the chatbot more responsive, and also we are not held hostage by the vagaries of the internet if a website or server goes down etc.

Can I ask you if the conversion you undertook from OWL -RDF - AIML was in fact automatic, or did you do this manually? Do you have any advice on how to do this automatically, or indeed what software would you recommend? I looked at Protege to convert from OWL to RDF to XML, but I have no idea if it can be set up to run a script to format it as AIML. Any ideas?

Also, here is a link to Adamus 1.08 alpha which I think uses both AIML and .mdb databases: http://www.charctercreationsanddesignworks.us/ProjectDownloads.html. This is getting nearer to our concept but we don't like the idea of .mdb databases, so we are not tied to one companies products.

Regards,
Jules

<quote author="efreese">
I just saw a twitter message from someone alerting me to this discussion. Sorry to join late.

I'm a little surprised that the conference papers don't seem to be available any more. I'll have to see if I can locate a distributable version, if you're interested. I'm not sure how much of it is still useful. In the paper I was looking at general RDF/OWL, focusing on ontologies like FOAF and Dublin Core and creating categories based on the resources and properties within them. With limited ontologies and data sets the concept seemed to work quite well. As I progressed with the work, I discovered that trying to create large numbers of categories was going to bring most bots to their knees, even with a DB backend. So I've backed away from trying to force all the information into a set of AIML.

I did look at the Cyc information as a possible source, but at the time they hadn't released everything yet and there were still too many holes. It might be worth looking at again, if you were trying to do some reasoning. But again there are many places where the knowledge is very shallow.

I'm now using Program O and using PHP calls to datasets like dbPedia and web services like weather and stocks to give the bot the appearance that everything is stored, when, in fact, it is being retrieved on the fly. The initial results look promising and I'm working on adding additional categories to do more complex queries.

I hope this gives you a little bit of background.

Hi all,

In the context of giving a sense of meaning to AI systems and as an example
of the dynamics of generic meaning generation I have written a book covering
the manifestation of our basic categories formation capabilities and the
specialist symbolisation of such.

As such I cover the capability of our brains, through oscillations, to
translate emotional, fight/flight, assessments of a context (intuitive,
parallel processing) into a corresponding yang/yin assessment (reasoned,
serial processing) and elicit associated imagery and finer details of that
situation. The book, the Emotional I Ching, covers the theory behind it all
(IDM is summarised in the appendix) and presents a practical example of the
application of that theory.

The ISBN distribution is not complete yet and so, as I understand it, one
can only get the book from Lulu (link below) but the distribution once done
will have it available from Amazon etc etc and so on to local bookshops if
they see it and decide to market it.

The link below has a review capability focused on the first 20+ pages and
hexagram 01 details - the ground of it all being in Jung's concept of the
Collective Unconscious that equates with the AI focus on an "upper ontology"
(aka meta-ontology, the is-ness of is-ness).

My last message was blocked, so I'll post it again:

The way I do this is to use conditions. For example, I get many visitors who
swear at my bot (as do we all I imagine) and so I use <think><set
name="personality">abusive</set></think> in each of my categories where the
user says, "F** off", "I hate you" and so on to set how the bot feels about
them.
Then if the user says, "I love you", "Do you like me" or similar, I check
for their personality property and reply accordingly. eg:

<category>
<pattern>DO YOU LIKE ME</pattern>
<template>
<condition name="personality">
 <li value="abusive">No not really<get name="name"/>. You are a mean and
rude person.</li>
 <li>Sure,<get name="name"/>. I like you very much.</li>
</condition>
</template>
</category>

<category>
<pattern>I LOVE YOU</pattern>
<template>
> Subject: Re: [alicebot-general] AIML and finite state machines
>
> Like Richard says, there are a number of ways that you can
> alter the response depending on the internal state of a person.
>
> In earlier discussions (recommend searching the mailing list
> for this) we have often talked about a mechanism to display
> emotion depending upon the type of inputs a person would send
> to your bot. Often this system would incorporate some kind of
> quadrant of different emotional states and use a counter to
> keep track of the internal state.
>

The Emotional I Ching is currently on line
(http://members.iimetro.com.au/~lofting/Emotional/homep.html ). It allows
for accessing emotional assessments of a situation and conversion to some
other form of assessment - all through the use of questions. It is an
example of a "Language of the Vague". How it works is covered in the FAQ on
the site, more formal perspective is covered in the Abstract Domain Model
page http://members.iimetro.com.au/~lofting/myweb/AbstractDomain.html with a
focus on an upper ontology. The EIC book will be out soon.

I am converting the EIC format into an AIML model as a set of tags to be
plugged-in - the issue is in refinements differentiating primary from
secondary emotions. The IDM abstract domain focus in on differentiating the
neural hierarchy where BENEATH the layer of symbol creation and so multiple
context identifications is a level of meaning that is label-free in that it
covers a SINGLE context. Since the labels levels are dependent upon this
base level for their operation so we can translate a set of labels from one
specialist domain to those of another by exploiting the sameness present in
the pre-labels layer.

The IDM abstract domain model identifies the classes of meaning derived in
this single context realm where all labels will point to these classes. Thus
we take specialist labels, convert them to the sameness level classes and
the back up into a different set of specialist labels. In the EIC we use
fight/flight derived classes to translate into yang/yin derived classes.

At this level of no labels, and so single context, it is the HIERARCHY that
elicits meaning where this is in the form of applying a class of dichotomy
recursively and so moving from general to particular and creating classes of
possible meanings. Selection of elements of the dichotomy, through
questions, then maps out a path of actuals through the set of potentials to
give us the specific current meaning.

There are three classes of dichotomy - symmetric (Equivalence focus),
anti-symmetric (traditional Aristotle XOR focus), and asymmetric (Part/whole
processing, also IMP focus). What is of interest is that the initial
recursive process is mechanistic but given some depth (at least 6 levels) we
see emerge the organic in the form of literal categories suddenly being able
to be used figuratively (efficiently so, less levels lack such) and so as
sources of analogy that is 'hard coded' into the methodology of recursion.
At this level we can get each class to have its properties and methods
described by analogy to all of the other classes - as such we have here the
beginnings of languages.

Chris

Hello, some people use the AIML <topic> tag to vary the responses
based on the state of the <topic> value.

You can also make the responses dependent on AIML predicates with
Hello everybody!

I installed ProgramD on Windows Vista. But I can't make the <system> test
succeed. I tried with the prefix cmd /C but all I can get is these answer:

[YourBot] user> testsystem
[2009-01-25 22:36:29,322] WARN: Error executing <system> command "cmd \C
echo Test passed."
CreateProcess: "cmd \C echo Test passed." error=2

I noticed that in the output the command that seems to be executing is *cmd
\C* while in the core.xml file I used the forward slash *<entry
key="programd.system-interpreter.prefix">cmd /C</entry>
*
I tried also changing this entry: *<entry
key="programd.system-interpreter.directory">C:\Windows\System32\</entry>*using
*.. *instead of the directory where cmd.exe is...

In windows xp it runs perfectly... but I don't understand what is happening
in Vista.

Please I would appreciate any help

Hello, some people use the AIML <topic> tag to vary the responses
based on the state of the <topic> value.

You can also make the responses dependent on AIML predicates with
<get> and <set>:
> I'm new to AIML, so please be patient if my question has a obvious answer or
> so on.
>
> I'm doing a little research to discover if there's a way of incorporate the
> concept of the finite state machines in AIML, in order to create a
> bot/character who answers in different ways depending on his internal state.
>
> Is there a way to define this states directly with AIML, or another language
> is needed to define the states along with a different/hybrid parser?
> Thank you!
