amcheck kills running amvault?

I run amanda 2.6.1p2 on Scientific Linux 5.4, x86_64.

My main amanda config uses a physical tape changer.
This basic setup has been working fine for many years.

Now I've been experimenting with using amvault to archive tapes to chg-disk
vtapes.

Relevent amanda.conf lines:

tpchanger "chg-zd-mtx" # the tape-changer glue script
tapedev "tape:/dev/nst1"
changerdev "/dev/changer"
changerfile "/usr/local/etc/amanda/PhysicsSet/changer"

I vault like this:
amvault PhysicsSet latest vault PhysicsSet_Vault-%%%

Everything runs fine.

But then one day the amvault failed with error:
<XferSourceDevice@0x8c4a160> failed: error reading from /dev/nst1: Error
reading from tape device: Input/output error

Looking at the timing I see that that was exactly when the regularly scheduled
amcheck started. I've since verified that I can crash a running amvault by
running amcheck.

I was surprised by this behavior, because I thought that reservations would
take care of it. If amdump or amflush is running, amcheck will simply skip
the tape check. That is all very polite and what I would have expected. It
seems that amcheck does not respect amvault's changer reservation. Is that a
bug, or should I just be careful to cancel any scheduled amcheck when I'm
running amvault?

I'm trying to configure amanda server 2.6p2 on ubuntu server 8.04 with NEO (2 drives). I have configured with chg-zd-mtx it is working but trying to configure two drives with chg-robot changer I get this errrors:

The file is generated by flex, so if flex fails it *should* fail with
a nonzero exit status, which should cause 'make' to fail. You
weren't, by any chance, doing a parallel make, were you?

Well, there's your problem. Any idea how it got that way? If you
remove it and run 'make uscan.c', what happens? Do you have flex
installed?

By the way, I'm glad to see you're building from Subversion! It can
be tough, though - there are a lot of tools required for developers
that are not required for those compiling from distribution tarballs.
The requirements are detailed here:

On the other hand, flex *is* required to build from a tarball, so I'm
not sure what's going on here.

connection timed out

Hi Amanda users,

I have gotten rid of most of the file changes message by
using exclude lists, I'm a little baffled that /devices
or "." change but this may be a side effect of running an
amanda client in an "ldom" (Logical Domain) and then running
zones of top of it (Solaris 10x86 base system).

I am seeing "Connection timed out" messages... before this
most recent run I increased "dtimeout" up to 3600 (default
is 1200, I had previously set it to 2400).

The sc1beaz1 structure was hit and miss, the dorldom1z1 was
recently added back into the disklist (zone for oracle that
was in testing for an extended period, we are moving towards
production).

Happy and able to include log files but needed to know what
was needed, client or server side, of if there was another
config switch I should try first.

Server is a FW system running Solaris 9 and amanda 2.4.4
this client is Solaris 10x86 with amanda 2.6.1p1.

The dumps certainly start, they just done finish...

Those functions are both defined by the output of flex, uscan.c, which
is generated from uscan.l and is the source for uscan.o. What's in
the .c file?

That particular piece of functionality didn't make it into 2.6.1. It
is in 3.1, though. Not being able to communicate config overrides was
a major problem with the old Changer API.

If you just want to build the barcode database, you can temporarily
edit your amanda.conf.

On the other hand, if you're building from source, why not build 3.1?
If you build from the 3_1 branch, you'll have the latest. We'll be
doing a beta in a few days.

P.S. I've got my stuff squared away for 3.1, so I'm working on
upgrading amvault. If I can manage to stay away from #amanda and
amanda-users for long enough, I'll have a new-and-improved amvault in
3.1 :)

How do you build the barcode database for a changer being used to vault from disk to tape?

Hey, progress! You're right, glib-2.1.x is not going to work, but
glib-2.13 will. By the way, glib version numbers are a bit confusing.
Versions are implicitly qualified with .* as necessary, so glib2 is
glib2.*.*, glib-2.0 is glib-2.0.*, and so on. The numbers are full
integers, like Linux kernel versions, so glib-2.13.0 is newer than
glib-2.2.

I'm not sure how you've managed to have so many versions of glib
installed, but I think your hunch is correct. The config.log may give
you some idea how to sort it out. If you have trouble, please attach
the log in a private email and I'll take a look.

Well, shoot, that should be adequate!

Have you re-run autogen since installing the -devel packages? What do
you see from

rpm -qlp glib2-devel | grep '\.m4$'

(my 'rpm' syntax may need some adjustment .. I'd like to see if there
are any .m4 files in the glib2-devel packages)

This really does work! We just haven't found which part isn't connecting.

which would be absolute from the root of the file system.

Thanks for the report!

It looks like you don't have glib installed. That string
(AM_PATH_GLIB_2_0) is a macro that is defined by a .m4 file that's
installed alongside glib.

And this is one of the bugs. An 'amvault' run counts as a taper run,
so when you specify "latest" the next time, you're asking it to vault
the previous vaulting run. If you give an explicit timestamp, it will
work.

Interesting that fixing the tape check fixed the changer problem.. I'm
not sure why that would happen.

Well, I can give a little more detail. I encrypted a backup with
amcryptsimple, then changed the passphrase and tried to decrypt it. I
got:

didn't get much more love in the upcoming release (which has already
branched -- we'll have a beta release shortly). It's certainly ripe
for hacking, though!

Hmm, so the first thing to figure out is, does an incorrect passphrase
generate that error? If so, then I suspect that you've been
encrypting with a different passphrase than you're using for
decryption. That this works for other systems points strongly in this
direction.

One thing you might do is amfetchdump's -l option, and then try
various manual invocations of gpg to decrypt it. Maybe there are
other passphrases available? You might also try stracing the gpg run.
If it reads most of the way to the end before bailing out, then it is
more likely to be a corrupt file. If it bails out at the very
beginning, then it's more likely to be a settings problem.

content is the same. We did change a few things: for example, we got
rid of the "patches" link in the menu, since it was patches for

something that we need to highlight for newcomers.

So I tried to retrieve an older version using amfetchdump - so

Since it's happened on almost every backup I've tried, I'm assuming I'm missing a very important piece of information - so I do think it's a bad key or I'm missing the public key. I have another computer that is backed up the exact same way and I've had no problems recovering files for that one.

That makes sense, then. I've been thinking that we should put a test
in ./configure to catch the hang earlier.
