sometimes there could be some sticky residue from having a tape in there with the play button down (assuming its a manual play button) + different ambient temperatures. other times its just dirt caked on there. the roller pinches the shaft making it spin with the tape sandwiched in there pushing it along. this is what moves the tape at a steady speed. crucial parts!
get a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol and clean the pinch roller and shaft in side. you can do this without taking the deck apart. clean the heads while your at it. this is just to make sure there's nothing sticky in there. you can try this and see if it helps but if it persists, the main problem may be an old loose belt. sometimes tape decks use a main belt for the pinch roller and a secondary belt for the spindles. and ofcourse dont forget to make sure you tape rolls freely.
> Subject: [AH] cassette deck help
>
> hey. this might be a bit OT, but i had no idea where else to turn to:
>
> i have a Kenwood KX-7030 deck here and i just got a few cassettes that i'd
> love to listen to (if anyone's interested, it's Cliffsides Lucid Dreams -
> synth content!)
>
> so, the problem: side A plays fine, sounds perfect. but when i flip the tape
> (there's no auto-reverse), the mechanism somehow keeps garbling the tape,
> like crushing it.
> first the sound gets a bit muffled, then you start hearing the tape being
> crushed, the sound gets even worse and then it gets back to normal after a
> few seconds.
> after inspection, the tape is indeed crushed (i'm not really sure that's the
> correct word), maybe an inch of it is actually damaged. and then it repeats
> after maybe 10 seconds, sometimes more, sometimes less.
> and it only happens on one side!
>
> the cassette is position normal and it's quite short, maybe 20 minutes/side.
>
> does anyone have any ideas? it's not that i can't just get a new deck, this
> one really isn't anything special, but i'd really like to listen to this
> tape tonight.
> oh, and i don't have any kind of fancy tape-tech tools, like demagnetizers
> and such...
>
> thanks,
>> What we have in our workshop right now are two Matrix 12s, both with only
>> minor issues. One of the synths appears to be the early version as it does
>> not have the pressure (aftertouch) strip underneath the keyboard (the bed
>> of the synth does not have holes that hold the strip so it definitely has
>> not been taken out). Also, it sports a professionally mounted fan on the
>> right. The other M12 has aftertouch strip and original Oberheim 12 outputs
>> mod but no fan.
>>
>> Since they both belong to one owner and he suggested he will eventually be
>> getting rid of one, I need to suggets him something. Is there ANY reason
>> to
>> keep the first one (no aftertouch strip, with fan)?

Talk to the Roland service center and get a replacement power transformer. Replace the one in the unit with the new one. Don't mess with external boxes or stepdown xformers. Someone will plug it in without them and you may lose the unit. Big PITA. The replacement transformer will not cost that much. In fact a decent tech could just measure the secondary off a another 505 (or when yours is running off 100V) and find a off the shelf replacement. It all depends on weather you want to crack open the 505 to do it.

I'm selling my Paia 2700/4700 mixed system for $650 obo + shipping. It is featured in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCKeenZI5yU

I will add in my FR Mobius seen in the video to the deal for another $400. I will not sell the Mobius seperately at this time

The Paia system will include DIY pin cables and DIY pin to bannana cables. I will also include a number of pin connectors that you can use to make your own cables. As you can see in the video, the system works and easily integrates with other modular synth equipment using an MOTM patch panel. There may be individual modules that don't work 100%. I do know that one of the waveforms on one of the 3 oscillators will not output. I do not know of any other issues, but I may not have tried every combination.

It has a Transposer module that is great fun. It is the module I use in the video to tune the 3 oscillators to an interval. I don't see this module often.

I take Paypal. I will ship to most of the world.
