Announcing the Interaction 10 Design Challenge!Introduction
The Interaction Design Association (IxDA) http://www.ixda.org has joined together with the Creative Coast Alliance http://www.thecreativecoast.org to create a Design Challenge that will have a direct impact on the creative professionals and businesses of Savannah. The Challenge is structured to give participants an opportunity to put interaction design principles and methods to work, engage with the rich history of Savannah, and address an issue that effects the lives of their local peers. The Interaction 10 Local Design Challenge is generously sponsored by Adobe Systems. Background Savannah is duly proud of its legacy as the "first designed city" in the US, as well as its strong tradition of conservation for its historic city squares and architecture. The city is now enjoying a rebirth as a hub of creative and design-oriented business. Many of these have sprung up in the fertile ground of the Historic District, as new studios and consultancies have put down roots in this beautiful and inspirational part of the city. The Design Challenge In this burgeoning environment of entrepreneurialism, a new level of coordination between city government, small business and professional organizations is required. The emergence of these businesses in what was once purely residential space has created a conflict with the policies that were designed to preserve the city plan that spawned it. What kinds of systems and services are necessary to ensure that city government can respond to the needs of small businesses? What steps can be taken to help businesses understand their rights and obligations under current zoning, safety and conservation laws? IxDA and the Creative Coast Alliance are looking for participants to design systems, services and/or applications that will enable city government and planning departments to work with design professionals, businesses and entrepreneurs to identify areas of friction, propose solutions, and facilitate compromise. We're asking you to help facilitate useful, beneficial interaction that helps foster small business in a way that strengthens the community and takes into account Savannah's legacy of forward-thinking design. Getting Started At its core, this is a Gov2.0 design challenge: you're bringing the principles of participation, collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to bear to ameliorate a lack of communication between city government and its constituents. To understand your audience better, the Creative Coast Alliance will supply participants with a brief outline of the primary issues that impact small creative businesses in Savannah. Use these as a jumping off point for concepting what kind of solution you'd like to create. Participate! We're asking that interested participants sign up by emailing interaction@... by November 15th, 2009. All we need is a list of names of the individual/team that will be collaborating on a submission, and contact information for the individual/team representative. Team sizes up to four individuals are permissible. Prizes The Interaction 10 Local Design Challenge is generously sponsored by Adobe Systems. The winners in each of the Individual and Team categories will receive a copy of Adobe Creative Suite (up to 4 suites for the team) and $1000 donated in their name to a local Savannah charity. Important Dates November 15 - Participation enrollment ends December 15th - Submissions due January 15th - Selections announced For more information about the Design Challenge, please visit http://interaction.ixda.org/design-challenge/ About the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) With over 10,000 members worldwide and almost 70 local groups around the world, the IxDA network actively focuses on interaction design issues for the practitioner, no matter his or her level of experience.
