Mary Lou,

I hope everything worked well with both the show and the luncheon today.  You may have some pictures to post for those who could not attend.  What were your impressions of attendance and the displays, especially the GB display with two ashore boats, or were the two boats on the water?  Cowie's post suggested he was a second demo boat.  Let's hope this will drum up some good sales results for Stan & Company.

I have a followup ad coming in Sail which may help produce prospective skippers.

If the weather holds out, Sunday and Monday will produce some new contracts and more happy Rhoadie skippers.

Any news to the list appreciated.  Best to you and Fred.

Art

Parent Message unknown Boat Show Report

Art asked for a Boat Show report. So here goes. My apologies if I
missed someone that we spent time talking to. It was a very warm day
and ultimately I wilted a bit in the heat. (That's my story but in
truth my memory isn't great and my memory for names and faces is even worse)

Arrived in Annapolis around 0835 and parked in our secret parking
place. Had breakfast at a local hangout and had a nice chat with the
folks at the next table. One was a local racer and the other a friend
who was working a booth for company from Newport RI making kevlar
kayaks. Service was slow so we by the time we hit the bank and then
walked over to the show it was open. We did stop on the way and
admired Chris's Opus in the demo boat slip. Very sharp looking boat.

Wandered around a bit hit the GB display around 1030. 3 boats on
land. A new one, a recycled '01 and a recycled '88 with the mast
hoist system in place. Made for a very impressive display. # terrific
boats. I think it was made possible by the fact that Hunter seems to
have abandoned the space where it had a shoreside display. Spent some
time talking to Michael Meltzer. Met Mac Macready from the Magothy
and Steve Staum from Massachusetts. And a couple from Kansas who own
an older boat. Can't remember your names. Oops. Also at the display
was Carlos Rodriguez from General Boats.

No gathering for lunch.

In looking for a place for lunch we did see a couple in R22 shirts.
We followed them to their table and introduced themselves. I didn't
catch or don't recall their names but they were from Montreal and
bought Peter Thorn's Raven which once belonged to the Kaynors and
before that to Gary Sanford. I think that's the only R22 where we've
met 4 of the owners. We invited them to join the list so you may hear
from them something about the crazy Americans who accost people at lunch.

We managed to hit nearly all the land displays and a few of the boat
displays in addition to the GB display. I found a great deal on a
pair of Keen sandals and bought my nautical Christmas cards including
elle's Santa crab.

Actually GB was bucking the trend with a larger display. There were
fewer Catalinas, Hunters and Island Packets at the show than in
recent years. There were fewer large catamarans but there were still
a lot. West Marine had moved to the much larger space once occupied
by Boaters World (and I got a good deal on some sailing gloves). We
spent a bunch of time talking to Garmin trying to figure out the
differences between their small GPS/plotters.

Came back to the GB booth several times to see if we could help sell
a Rhodes or three. Chris, your boat was out on at least 3 demo sales
one of which may have sold a boat. We may have another boat on the
Choptank River off the Chesapeake Bay. Overall, interest in the R22
seemed high and Michael was working his butt off trying to be a
pushy-in-a-nice-way New York salesman. Actually he was great and if
he works at the same pace tomorrow he may be worn out by the time he
starts his new job in Chicago.

I think overall attendance was a little light but maybe not as light
as last year or the year before in the rain. Rain is predicted for
tomorrow. Not necessarily a bad thing as serious buyers still go.

We originally thought we might stick around and do dinner in
Annapolis but our feet were sore and we were wilting from the heat so
around 1800 we bid Stan, Elton, Michael, Mac and Steve goodbye and
headed back to the car.

Stopped in Chestertown on our way home. Highly recommend Brooks
Tavern if you are ever there. Great food, moderate portions and
prices. Arrived home to 40-some email messages and the request for a
Boat Show Report.

Good night.

Mary Lou,

Thanks for the show news, I just wish I could have been there to see that impressive display and have lunch with you all.  I hope that the bigger show presence pays off for GB.

It is a little rainy here, on and off.  I remember the gales of shows past.  Hope the rest of the show goes well.  Thanks again for a so thorough review.

Art

Best Stuff to clean your boat

by Bob Keller :: Rate this Message:

Reply to Author | View Threaded | Show Only this Message

Just wanted to share something I tried last week.  I always used "mean green" to clean my R-22.  Not the stuff you smoke, but the stuff they sell at Dollar General.   Used to buy the concentrate and mix it with water in a tank sprayer and clean the boat with it.  It used to be fine until I moved to the S. Georgia coast and when I left the boat in or out of the water for a couple of weeks it would be covered with dirt and mildew.  The mean green only worked if I scrubbed it with an abrasive sponge.  Used to kick my ass between having to scrub and fight off the sand gnats.  It was a losing battle and the boat was really getting worse and worse and scrubbing it was getting old.

My daughter's boyfriend (future son-in-law?) told me to try Jomax which he used to clean the fancy houses at the Ford Plantation in Richmond Hill.  I bought a small container of the concentrate, mixed it with bleach as per the instructions and used the same tank sprayer to apply it to the sailboat.  The boat was a huge mess since it sat in the boat yard uncovered from May until September.

I sprayed the stuff on the dry surface of the boat and let it sit for a while and had the sponge and bucket ready.  It was amazing - all the dirt and mildew came off on its own - all I had to do was rinse.  Did not have to pick up a sponge and I called Sheila to show her how clean the boat looked.  She was amazed.  I am really glad to have found this because when I keep the boat in the water at the Shrimp Docks it gets filthy and I have had no easy way to clean it.  This Jomax cleaned spots where I had not been able to reach before and it sparkled.

No, I am not trying to sell Jomax - this is not an infomercial.  I am just sharing what I consider an amazing new finding in how to clean your boat without much effort.

After the Jomax treatment, I gave it a quick Woody Wax treatment and I am ready for the next trip next week:  will it be Punta Gorda, Gulfport, Hartwell or Hilton Head?  Not sure yet - it is weather dependent, but will let you know.

Good night.

Bob,

Thanks for the recommendation, Bob.  Your impression after having your upcoming outing on the boat will be helpful too.  I'm curious what sprayer you use.  Would a hand sprayer work?

Would I enjoy seeing you all in Florida!

>
>
>

They make a few different products for stains. Which one did you use, the house cleaner or the mildew stain remover?

Hi All,
I was at the show Friday afternoon & all day Saturday. I was with Stan
as he closed the deal on the 2001 Refurb. Great to watch a master at
work. Michael Meltzer is working his ass off all day, every day,
trying to sell boats. I thought traffic @ the GB booth was great both
days- lot's of tire kickers & some interested parties. Cowie is doing
yeoman work taking many prospects on test sales with Mac doing double
duty as first mate & additional sales help. I took a turn yesterday as
first mate on Cowie's georgous R22 & helped with sales all afternoon.
What a great crew!
The show was a blast, sorry Ivhad to leave last night.

Steve
It was good to meet you.  Thanks for pitching in as first mate.  It
was especially helpful with those wind gusts off the Severn river.  I
plan to help out some more Monday and look forward to seeing how they
get all those boats out of the show Monday night.  I plan to watch
with a cold one in my hand and will spend the night on opus before
sailing her home Tuesday.

I was out Saturday and was getting hammered by the gusts. It said they were up to 18 knots, but it felt like more. Buried the rail for a time, and had a serious "what have I done!?" moment. Went to just the Main and it turned into a really nice (but still challenging) day.

My passenger was about to bail on me when she was kissing the Bay, but we were laughing about it the rest of the sail.lol

If you get a chance when the show is done I would like to hear how you handled things in those gusts.

Good to meet you Cowie & thanks for the sail on your gorgeous boat. If
you are ever in MA & want to slum it on an original 87 model, it would
be my pleasure.

Greg
The wind was quite gusty in Annapolis.  It gets especially tricky as
the shoreline conditions vary.  This was a real challange but good
opportunity to show potential buyers how well the rhodes can handle
such conditions.  We also kept away from the more open waters of the
Severn river were we could see white caps.  The main thing I did was
not to let out too much sail but do let out a balance if main and
jib.  Also don't be afraid to dump the main and let the sails luff a
bit until the gust passes.  We had few customers slid around a bit as
the rail dipped down but we didn't loose any.

>green only worked if I scrubbed it with an abrasive sponge.  Used to kick  my
>ass between having to scrub and fight off the sand gnats.  It was a  losing
>battle and the boat was really getting worse and worse and scrubbing it  was

>>My daughter's  boyfriend (future son-in-law?) told me to try Jomax which
>he used to clean the  fancy houses at the Ford Plantation in Richmond Hill.
>I bought a small  container of the concentrate, mixed it with bleach as per
>the instructions and  used the same tank sprayer to apply it to the
>sailboat.  The boat was a  huge mess since it sat in the boat yard uncovered from
>May until  September.

>>I sprayed the stuff on the  dry surface of the boat and let it sit for a
>while and had the sponge and  bucket ready.  It was amazing - all the dirt
>and mildew came off on its  own - all I had to do was rinse.  Did not have to
>pick up a sponge and I  called Sheila to show her how clean the boat looked.
> She was  amazed.  I am really glad to have found this because when I keep
>the boat  in the water at the Shrimp Docks it gets filthy and I have had no
>easy way to  clean it.  This Jomax cleaned spots where I had not been able
>to reach  before and it sparkled.

>>No, I am not  trying to sell Jomax - this is not an infomercial.  I am
>just sharing  what I consider an amazing new finding in how to clean your boat
>without much  effort.
>>
>>
>>
>>After the Jomax treatment, I gave it  a quick Woody Wax treatment and I am
>ready for the next trip next week:   will it be Punta Gorda, Gulfport,
>Hartwell or Hilton Head?  Not sure yet  - it is weather dependent, but will let
>you know.
