Any one else experienced this issue?Hi,
Does anyone else have this happen to them. Establish an Alias to your database, then put your database in the trash. Now use you Alias to see if you can open your database. I know, it shouldn't, but mine does! It doesn't happen on may other software program I own, only with 4D. Is this peculiar to my system only? Any feedback would be helpful. Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Michael,
Since you mention Alias I assume you're referring to Mac OS X. What version of 4D? I tested 4D v11.4 and I get a message from the OS telling me I cannot open the alias because the original item is in the Trash. -- Kind Regards, Luis Pineiros Technical Services Team Member 4D, Inc./www.4d.com ............................................................... Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Michael,
In 4D 2004.8 the message I get is from 4D and it reads: File not found The database cannot be used. It's a dialog, when I click OK 4D Quits. Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Hi Luis,
I have a folder which contains this particular database. I have an alias to the .4DB file within that folder. I place the folder with all its contents in the trash. I double click on the alias and the database starts up without a care in the world. I cannot do it with any other software program I own. I can't explain it, I only know that's what's happening. The reason I'm raising this is that I've just lost 2 weeks of work on the database because I deleted the trash thinking I was working on an entirely different version of the database. I had no idea that every time I used the alias, it was retrieving the 'trashed' version. As soon as I trashed the trash, I lost it all. You previously asked: > Is this peculiar to my system only? I think Luis is trying to say "yes" since he can't reproduce the problem. Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Hi Josh,
Yes, that hadn't escaped me, but I thought if I explained exactly how I did it, it might be different to the way Luis had tried. Sometimes doing something exactly the same way might produce the error. But thanks for replying. Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Michael,
As Josh had already mentioned, the steps are the best way to go. I had not placed the entire folder in the trash, just the file with the alias. However, the results for me are the same. In this case, Mac OS X 10.5.7 displays a dialog: The alias "name_of_database.4DB alias" could not be opened because it is in the Trash. To use this item, drag it out of the Trash first. Sometimes aliases may have the same name, but point to different files. To recap, using Mac OS X 10.5.7 and 4D 2004.8, regardless of how I tried to open a database placed in the trash using an alias, I was not able to do so. -- Kind Regards, Luis Pineiros Technical Services Team Member 4D, Inc./www.4d.com ............................................................... Re: Any one else experienced this issue?Hi Luis,
Thanks for 'experimenting' - even if you couldn't produce the error. I'll have to approach Apple and see what's going on in my machine.
