It all started in October of 1998, when C2Net, the makers of the Stronghold secure Web server (based on the Apache Web server) put on a conference in San Francisco. The conference, called "ApacheCon '98", was designed for users and developers of the Apache Web server software, and included an exhibit area for vendors. There were three different tracks of talks, and a few hundred people were in attendance.

From the point of view of the delegates, the ApacheCon '98 show was a success. However, a number of difficulties combined to prevent it from being repeated the following year, and the next ApacheCon event did not happen until ApacheCon 2000 in April of 2000.

By that time the original Apache Group had become the Apache Software Foundation, incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation, and started expanded into project areas beyond just the original Web server. ApacheCon 2000 was the first official Apache conference, presented by the Foundation itself rather than an outside vendor.

Since the Apache Software Foundation is quite distributed, with developers and contributors from several countries and software deployed world-wide, it was determined that the ongoing ApacheCon events would likewise be distributed around the globe. Accordingly, the next conference after the April one, ApacheCon 2000 Europe, was held in London, England in October of 2000. The third ASF-offered ApacheCon, ApacheCon 2001, was in Santa Clara, California, USA. The fourth was to be in Dublin, Ireland, but the then-production company (Camelot Communications) went bankrupt.

There was a hiatus until November of 2002, at which point we began having annual U.S. conferences again, managed by a different production company. Conference activity outside the U.S. didn't resume until July of 2005, when S&S Verlag was retained to produce it.

The current plan is to continue this trend, holding two ApacheCon conferences per year -- one in the United States and the other somewhere else in the world.

The conferences are organised and managed by a planning committee consisting of members of the Foundation's 'conference committee' and representatives from the production company (or companies).

Raise a Glass to Apache: Join the ASF in celebrating its 10th Anniversary

As you know, the ASF turned 10 this year — our celebrations kicked off with cake at ApacheCon Europe this past March. We were thrilled to receive birthday wishes from so many members from the Apache community from across the world.

Our festivities will continue at ApacheCon US (Oakland, California), where we will be holding the Big Feather Birthday Bash and related community events during the conference. We anticipate seeing many of you there!

Some of you are unable to join us in person, but we don't want you to miss out on the fun. As such, we're inviting our global community to "Raise a Glass to Apache" and celebrate this landmark event at your own local gathering. Recognizing Apache developers and users as part of the ASF's 10th Anniversary is very important to us. We want you to join the fun, meet other Apache enthusiasts, make new friends, put faces to the names behind those emails, and, of course, engage in all things Apache.

We understand that communities have their own local culture and preferences: you are welcome to host the type of event best suited to your needs. Preferably, this will take place during the week of ApacheCon (2-6 November, 2009; the Big Feather Birthday Bash is on Wednesday, 4 November) — your event can be held on any day of that week, at any time of the day or night that is most convenient for you. Events include but are not limited to:

- Social Gatherings – getting together over coffee, lunch, drinks, or dinner
- Tech Talks – individual or industry presentations given about ASF projects and actvities
- Product Demos – showcasing how Apache technologies are powering creative and robust solutions
- Hackathon – collaborating on Apache code bases with ASF Committers
- MeetUps or GetTogethers – featuring talks or presentations on a specific Apache Project or activity
- Networking and Job Match – connecting developers with users, employers with potential hires, clients with contractors/consultants, etc.

Can't wait until ApacheCon? That's OK: we're always up for a celebration, so feel free to get started as soon as you'd like — you can Raise a Glass to Apache at an upcoming conference such as the OpenWorld Forum (Paris), SpringOne 2GX (New Orleans), CPOSC 2009 (Harrisburg, PA), FOSS4G 2009 (Sydney), NLUUG Open Web (Amsterdam), UTOSC 2009 (Sandy, UT), and OSMC 2009 (Nürnberg), among others.

So let's get started! There are three steps to make your event happen:

Step 1: Organize. Decide who will be the host(s)/main point(s) of contact, where the event will be held, the day and time, the format, and any costs.

Step 2: Publicize. Spread the word to your coworkers, the press, and your friends. Post details on your event on blogs, mailing lists, event listings, etc. Drive enthusiasm by discussing the event details to the media and on podcasts. Ask people who will be there to invite other groups who may be interested.

Step 3: Apprise. Share your goodwill with the Apache community. Wish the ASF a happy anniversary on the Foundation blog; post photos of your event online; and submit a "MyApache" video tribute (can be one or more of the following -- 1-2 minutes describing why you love Apache; 1-2 minutes of your group Raising a Glass to Apache/singing Happy Birthday; 2-5 minutes describing the cool ways you use ASF technologies ... be sure to mention which Apache projects you use as well as your results.)

The important thing is to have fun! Get inspired by checking out the ASF's YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/TheApacheFoundation. "MyApache" submissions received by 2 October (midnight US Pacific time/GMT-8) will receive priority consideration to be featured in the ASF's ApacheWay channel and at the Big Feather Birthday Bash!

A schedule of all confirmed events will be posted on the ApacheCon site. To be included in the list, please send a copy of your invitation (including the date, time, and location) to sk@.... I will send you information on how to add your event in the ApacheCon network, how to submit your "MyApache" tributes, as well as suggestions on how to organize and publicize your event.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

ApacheCon Celebrates the ASF's 10th Anniversary in Oakland, California,
2-6 November 2009

Call for Papers Opens for ApacheCon US 2009

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) invites submissions to its official
user and developer conference, taking place 2-6 November 2009 at the Oakland
Convention Center and Marriott Hotel. ApacheCon serves as a forum for
showcasing the ASF's latest projects, members, and community initiatives.
Offering unparalleled educational opportunities, ApacheCon's presentations,
hands-on trainings, and sessions address key technology, development,
business/community, and licensing issues in Open Source.

The wide range of activities offered at ApacheCon promotes the exchange of
ideas amongst ASF Members, committers, innovators, developers, vendors, and
users interested in the future of Open Source technology. The conference
program includes peer-reviewed sessions, trainings/workshops, and select
invited keynote presentations and speakers.

Conference Themes and Topics

Building on ten years of success, ApacheCon returns to the Bay Area for the
10th anniversary of the Apache Software Foundation. Comprising some of the
most active and recognized developers in the Open Source community,
ApacheCon provides an influential platform for dialogue between Open Source
developers and users, traversing a wide range of ideas, expertise, and
personalities.

ApacheCon welcomes submissions across many fields, geographic locations, and
areas of development. The breadth of the Apache community lends itself to
conference content that is somewhat loosely-structured, with common themes
of interest addressing groundbreaking technologies and emerging trends, best
practices (from development to deployment), case studies and lessons learned
(tips, tools, and tricks). In addition, ApacheCon will continue to offer its
highly popular, two-day intensive trainings; certifications of completion
will be distributed to those who fulfill all the training requirements.

Topics appropriate for submission are manifold, and may include but are not
restricted to: Apache HTTP server (installation, configuration, migration,
and more); ASF-wide projects (including Lucene, Hadoop, Jackrabbit, and
Maven); Scripting languages and dynamic content (such as Java, Perl, Python,
Ruby, XSL, and PHP); Security and e-commerce (performance tuning, load
balancing and high availability); New technologies (including broader
initiatives such as Web Services and Web 2.0); ASF-Incubated projects (such
as Sling, UIMA, and Shindig); and Business/Community issues (Open Source
driven business models, open development, enterprise adoption, and more).

Submission Guidelines

Submissions must include; – Session title - Speaker name - Speaker biography
- Session description - Format and duration - Audience expertise level

Full details are available online on the CFP page at [WWW]
http://us.apachecon.com/c/acus2009/cfp/

Types of Presentations; - Trainings/Workshops - General Sessions - Case
Studies/Industry Profiles - Corporate Showcases & Demonstrations - Fast
Feather (short) sessions - Birds of a Feather discussions - Invited
Keynotes/Panels/Speakers

Pre-Conference Trainings/Workshops

Held on the first two days of the conference (2-3 November 2009), ApacheCon
trainings are available at a registration fee beyond the regular conference
fee. Proposals may be submitted for half-day (3 hours), full-day (6 hours),
or two-day (12 hours) training sessions. These proposed tutorials should be
aimed at providing in-depth, hands-on development experience or related
continuing education. Training submissions are welcome at beginner,
intermediate, and expert levels.

General Sessions include presentations on practical development
applications, insight into high-interest projects, best practices and key
advances, overcoming implementation challenges, and industry innovations.
Especially welcome are submissions that extend participants' understanding
the role of ASF projects and their influence on the Open Source community at
large. General Sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes and are accessible to
all conference delegates.

Case Study/Industry Profile

Practitioners are invited to submit presentations that focus on how
implementing particular ASF technologies led to improved products/solutions,
service offerings, changes in work practices, among other successes.
Proposals that highlight overcoming interesting challenges in application
design and developing innovative frameworks using multiple ASF projects are
particularly encouraged. NOTE: Marketing-oriented submissions aimed at
promoting specific organizations or products will not be accepted.

Invited Keynotes/Panels/Speakers

Each conference the ApacheCon Planning team invites select presenters
dealing with engaging, dialectical, and challenging subjects to present in
keynote and/or panel formats. Topics include cutting-edge technology
development, industry leadership, hot or emerging trends, opinions on
controversial issues, insight on technology paradigms, and contrasting
viewpoints in complementary professional areas. Those interested in
suggesting a candidate for an invited speaker opportunity should submit a
brief proposal with the speaker's name, affiliation, background/bio,
overview of topics of interest, and contact information.

Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions and Fast Feather Track talks are selected
by separate processes, nearer to the beginning of the conference.

Proposals are now being accepted at http://us.apachecon.com/c/acus2009/cfp/
and can be revised at anytime until the submissions closing deadline of 28
February 2009.

In addition, sponsorship opportunities for both ApacheCon EU 2009/Amsterdam
and ApacheCon US 2009/Oakland are available. Please contact Delia Frees at

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) invites submissions to its official conference, ApacheCon Europe 2009. To be held 23rd to 27th March, 2009 at the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre, ApacheCon serves as a forum for showcasing the ASF's latest developments, including its projects, membership, and community. ApacheCon offers unparalleled educational opportunities, with dedicated presentations, hands-on trainings, and sessions that address core technology, development, business/marketing, and licensing issues in Open Source.

ApacheCon's wide range of activities are designed to promote the exchange of ideas amongst ASF Members, innovators, developers, vendors, and users interested in the future of Open Source technology. The conference program includes competitively selected presentations, trainings/workshops, and a small number of invited speakers. All sessions undergo a peer review process by the ApacheCon Conference Planning team. The following information provides presentation category descriptions, and information about how to submit your
proposal.

Conference Themes and Topics

APACHECON 2009 - LEADING THE WAVE OF OPEN SOURCE

Building on the success of the last two years, we are excited to return to Amsterdam in 2009. We'll be continuing to offer our very popular two-day trainings, including certifications of completion for those who fulfill all the requirements of these trainings.

The ASF comprises some of the most active and recognized developers in the Open Source community. By bringing together the pioneers, developers, and users of flagship Open Source technologies, ApacheCon provides an influential platform for dialogue, between the speaker and the audience, between project contributors and the community at large, traversing a wide range of ideas, expertise, and personalities.

ApacheCon welcomes submissions from like-minded delegates across many fields, geographic locations, and areas of development. The breadth and loosely-structured nature of the Apache community lends itself to conference content that is also somewhat loosely-structured. Common themes of interest address groundbreaking technologies and emerging trends, successful practices (from development to deployment), and lessons learned (tips, tools, and tricks). In addition to technical content, ApacheCon invites Business Track submissions that address Open Source business, marketing, and legal/licensing issues.

Topics appropriate for submission to this conference are manifold, and may include but are not restricted to:

- Apache HTTP server topics such as installation, configuration, and migration
- ASF-wide projects such as Lucene, SpamAssassin, Jackrabbit, and Maven
- Scripting languages and dynamic content such as Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, XSL, and PHP
- Security and e-commerce
- Performance tuning, load balancing and high availability
- New technologies and broader initiatives such as Web Services and Web 2.0
- ASF-Incubated projects such as Sling, UIMA, and Shindig

Submission Guidelines
Submissions must include
- Title
- Speaker name, with affiliation and email address
- Speaker bio (100 words or less)
- Short description (50 words or less)
- Full description including abstract and objectives (200 words or
less)
- Expertise level (beginner to advanced)
- Format and duration (trainings vs. general presentation; half-, full- or two-day workshop, etc.)
- Intended audience and maximum number of participants (trainings only)
- Background knowledge expected of the participants (trainings only)

Types of Presentations

- Trainings/Workshops
- General Sessions
- Case Studies/Industry Profiles
- Invited Keynotes/Panels/Speakers
- Corporate Showcases & Demonstrations

BoF sessions and Fast Feather Track talks will be selected separately

Pre Conference Trainings/Workshops
Held on the first and second day of the conference – 2008-03-23 and 2008-03-24, Trainings require a registration fee beyond the regular conference fee. Proposals may be submitted for half-day (3 hours), full-day (6 hours), or two-day (12 hours) training sessions, aimed at providing in-depth, hands-on development experience or related continuing education. Training submissions are welcome at beginner, intermediate, and expert levels.

General Sessions
General Sessions include presentations on practical development applications, insight into high-interest projects, best practices and key advances, overcoming implementation challenges, and industry innovations. Especially welcome are submissions that extend participants' understanding the role of ASF projects and their influence on the Open Source community at large. General Sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes and are accessible to all conference delegates.

Case Study/Industry Profile
Practitioners are invited to submit presentations that focus on how implementing particular ASF technologies led to improved products/solutions, service offerings, changes in work practices, among other successes. Proposals that highlight overcoming interesting challenges in application design and developing innovative frameworks using multiple ASF projects are particularly encouraged. NOTE: Marketing-oriented submissions aimed at promoting specific organizations or products will not be accepted.

Invited Keynotes/Panels/Speakers
Each conference the ApacheCon Planning team invites select presenters dealing with engaging, dialectical, and challenging subjects to present in keynote and/or panel formats. Topics include cutting-edge technology development, industry leadership, hot or emerging trends, opinions on controversial issues, insight on technology paradigms, and contrasting viewpoints in complementary professional areas. Those interested in suggesting a candidate for an invited speaker opportunity should submit a brief proposal with the speaker's name, affiliation, background/bio, overview of topics of interest, and contact information.

Important Dates
Please submit your completed proposal, at http://eu.apachecon.com/c/aceu2009/cfp/ before Friday, 24th October, 2008 Midnight GMT.

ApacheCon US and OFBiz Symposium bring together the Apache Community
in New Orleans, November 3-7

ApacheCon US to hold new BarCamp at 2008 conference and host
Voluntourism Day

New Orleans, LA – July 30, 2008 - ApacheCon US, the official user
conference of The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), will host new
features at this year's US conference to bring the Apache community
closer together, including a new BarCamp, a Voluntourism Day, and the
social networking site CrowdVine. The conference schedule has been
published and registration is open. Register by August 15 to receive
Early Bird discount prices.

The Apache Open For Business (OFBiz) Symposium is co-locating with
ApacheCon US, bringing a new community of users to the event.
Attendees will be able to mix-and-match the tracks from both
conferences and have the opportunity to network with submitters,
experts, and users.

New at ApacheCon is BarCampApache, (November 4). The BarCamp will be
the first Apache-focused, participant-driven unconference, gathering
people interested in The ASF and its various projects to share and
learn in an open environment. BarCampApache will be intense with
discussions, demos and interaction from participants packed into an
ad-hoc event. The BarCamp is free, but due to limited space,
pre-registration is required.

A special added feature of ApacheCon is Camp Hadoop, (November 6-7).
Camp sessions will focus on Apache Hadoop, the platform being utilized
by organizations to deliver petabyte scale computing and storage on
commodity hardware, and by academic and industrial research groups to
teach data parallel computing. Hadoop developers and users will
review new projects and case studies of Hadoop applications while
participating in interactive discussions on the platform's future.

For the first time ApacheCon will host a Voluntourism Day on November
8, a day focused on lending a hand to the New Orleans area. The ASF
has always emphasized "community over code" and now it will put that
motto into action by assisting and supporting another community in
need. Full details on the Voluntourism Day will be announced in
September.

"New Orleans is still in many ways suffering from the aftereffects of
Hurricane Katrina. Our goal is to utilize The ASF's ideals of openness
and collaboration to embrace the city's people and culture and work
together to bring change. We have a truly dedicated community writing
Open Source code and we hope our participants will stay to support the
Voluntourism Day," said Lars Eilebrecht, Vice President of Conference
Planning, ASF.

Open Source booms as ApacheCon Europe 2008 pulls in record crowds

Official European conference of The Apache Software Foundation
achieved 40% growth in registered attendee numbers and stronger
sponsorship from leading tech organisations, signifying greater
awareness, interest and investment in Open Source technology in
Europe.

Amsterdam - 29 April 2008 - ApacheCon Europe, the official
conference of The Apache Software Foundation, has announced that the
2008 event, held in April, attracted higher than ever attendance
figures, with 496 registered attendees for this year's event.
This figure represents an increase of more than 40% over the
previous year, demonstrating the rapidly growing interest in Open
Source software amongst European businesses.

Further proof of the increasing take-up of Open Source technology
was demonstrated by the fact that all of the pre-conference training
sessions, including the new two-day training events, were nearly
sold out. The conference also attracted a larger number of sponsors
this year, including several high profile partners such as Google,
Hewlett Packard, and Yahoo!.

Lars Eilebrecht, Vice President of Conference Planning, Apache
Software Foundation said, "The success of this year's ApacheCon
Europe provides a clear signal that Open Source technology is now a
significant component of the European IT landscape. Organisations
throughout Europe are increasingly recognising the many benefits
that Open Source software offers over its proprietary counterparts,
and this is reflected in their increased spending on Open Source
training and development."

Several distinguished keynote speakers attended the 2008 conference
including Cliff Schmidt from Literacy Bridge, Rishab Aiyer Ghosh
from the Open Source Initiative and Roy Fielding from Day Software.
This event was supported by CrowdVine for Conferences
(http://apacheconeu2008.crowdvine.com/), a social networking site
designed to help delegates, sponsors and speakers make the most of
their time at the conference. And for the first time, Linux New
Media provided a live streaming of the Keynotes and one track each
day. You can view these at
http://streaming.linux-magazin.de/en/archive_apachecon08eu.htm.
The keynotes are available for free and the other talks are
available for 49 Euro.

The response from bloggers who attended the conference has been
overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as the following finding
their way onto the blogosphere:

"The last five days I have been in Amsterdam to attend
ApacheCon. The conference this year, as always, was really amazing.
The presentations I attended were absolutely on the top-level."
- Petar Tahchiev
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/paranoiabla/archive/2008/04/apachecon_in_am.html

"I presented twice at ApacheCon Europe last week. Both times
the room was full - I think ApacheCon Europe is starting to have a
bit of buzz that wasn't there before. The conversations were
excellent." - Paul Fremantle
http://pzf.fremantle.org/2008/04/presentations-from-apachecon.html

"This was my first ApacheCon, I really enjoyed myself. Many
thanks to the sponsors and organisers for a great event." -
ApacheCon Europe, the official user conference of The Apache Software
Foundation, has announced the keynote speakers for this year's event
in Amsterdam, 7-11 April.

With topics encompassing the collaborative model of creativity, the
economics of free software, and Apache 3.0, ApacheCon Europe 2008
continues its commitment to leading the wave of Open Source. Through
sparking discussion and increasing interest within the Open Source
Community, ApacheCon expands the opportunities for the deployment and
application of Open Source software across Europe.

It is estimated that over 400 Open Source users, enthusiasts, experts
and beginners will attend this year's event in Amsterdam at which
the keynote speakers will be:

CLIFF SCHMIDT, Executive Director of Literacy Bridge - 9 April

"Using Audio Technology and Open Content to Reduce Global Illiteracy,
  Poverty and Disease"

Cliff will open the conference with a talk on how an Open Source project
is helping some of the world's one billion illiterate adults and
children to access the knowledge that is crucial to preventing diseases,
creating economic opportunity and defending their human rights.

RISHAB AIYER GHOSH, Open Source Initiative Board Member - 10 April

Apache and Steam Engines: the Magic of Collaborative Innovation

Rishab will discuss the collaborative model of creativity throughout
history, from 18th century steam engines to the human genome project and
discuss why and how collaborative creativity works.

ROY FIELDING, Co-founder of The Apache Software Foundation,
and Vice President, Apache HTTP Server - 11 April

Apache 3.0 (a Tall Tale)

At various points in Apache's history, the httpd project faced
chasms that could not be crossed by the small steps of collaborative
design, but required heroic individual leaps to push it forward. Roy
believes the project currently faces another chasm, and his talk will be
about what waits on the other side.

SPONSORS AND EXHIBITORS include world leading technology companies such
as Accenture, The Apache Software Foundation, Cloudmark, The Covalent
IONA, JTeam, WSO2, and Yahoo! This year's European gathering of
Open Source users, enthusiasts and vendors continues the ApacheCon
OS SUMMIT ASIA 2007: NEW EVENT, BACKED BY APACHE AND ECLIPSE, TO
DRIVE PACE OF OPEN SOURCE ADOPTION IN ASIA

Hong Kong to host Asia's largest Open Source community conference in
November this year. The event is expected to be hugely popular due to
rapidly growing support for Open Source software in Asia over recent
years.

Hong Kong - June 29, 2007 - Two of the leading organizations in the
Open Source community, The Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse
Foundation, have announced plans for Asia's largest Open Source community
conference - the first of its kind in Hong Kong and China.

The inaugural OS Summit Asia will be held at the Le Meridian hotel in
Hong Kong's leading edge Cyberport IT development zone on November
26th - 30th 2007.

With Open Source software rapidly growing in popularity in the region,
this community summit, the first joint conference between Apache and
Eclipse and the first in Hong Kong and China, is expected to be a vibrant
event, encouraging a lively exchange of ideas between all those involved
in OSS, including developers, vendors and users.

Winston Damarillo, Co-Executive Producer of the OS Summit said, "As Asia
moves to become the largest consumer of Open Source technologies, it is
increasingly important that the region is able to experience the Open
Source community process in action. We are excited to be able to
demonstrate this in the context of the collaboration between Eclipse and
Apache. Local communities and associations have been a tremendous help
in supporting us and providing the best possible venue to launch this
initiative."

According to recent research from Evans Data Corporation
(www.evansdata.com), the number of developers using Open Source software
in Asia has jumped by 40% over the past three years. The popularity of the
Linux operating system has also boomed in recent years, providing the
region's developing countries with a free and robust alternative to
leading commercial operating systems.

Justin Erenkrantz, President of The Apache Software Foundation, said,
"The Apache Software Foundation is delighted to be supporting Open Source
communities in emerging countries with the OS Summit Asia 2007
conference. We hope that by showcasing the combined communities behind
Eclipse and Apache that we will be able to cultivate a stronger presence
for Open Source in the region."

OS Summit Asia will offer unique educational opportunities, with hands-on
training, competitively selected general sessions, and a small number of
invited speakers that address new technologies, development methods,
business and marketing, and licensing issues in Open Source software.
Topics featured at the summit include:

ASF-wide projects such as Apache HTTP Server, Jakarta, Tomcat, Axis,
Harmony, Maven, Web Services, and SpamAssassin Eclipse-wide projects such
as BI and Reporting Tools (BIRT), Web Tools Platform (WTP), Eclipse
Modeling Framework (EMF), Data Tools Platform (DTP), Equinox and the Rich
Client Platform (RCP) Programming languages such as Java, Perl, Python,
Ruby and PHP Web development technologies and techniques including
security, performance tuning, e-commerce and Java EE New technologies and
trends such as Web Services and Web 2.0 Open Source projects and
activities in Asia, local efforts and case studies

Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation said,
"This event is not just about technology: it's about the community and
culture and inevitability of Open Source - a movement that creates and
maintains a wealth of innovation and ideas. Across Asia interest in Open
Source is building. The timing of this event is perfect to harness and
build on that interest."

CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE: 13th July 2007

Members of the Apache and Eclipse Open Source communities are invited to
trainers will be provided with up to 7 nights in the Le Meridian Hotel
