tag:old.nabble.com,2006:forum-23246Nabble - ApacheCon2009-12-02T23:47:02ZIt all started in October of 1998, when C2Net, the makers of the Stronghold secure Web server (based on the Apache Web server) put on a conference in San Francisco. The conference, called "ApacheCon '98", was designed for users and developers of the Apache Web server software, and included an exhibit area for vendors. There were three different tracks of talks, and a few hundred people were in attendance.
<br><br>From the point of view of the delegates, the ApacheCon '98 show was a success. However, a number of difficulties combined to prevent it from being repeated the following year, and the next ApacheCon event did not happen until <a href="http://apachecon.com/2000/US/" target="_top" rel="nofollow">ApacheCon 2000</a> in April of 2000.
<br><br>By that time the original Apache Group had become the <a href="http://www.apache.org/" target="_top" rel="nofollow">Apache Software Foundation</a>, incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation, and started expanded into project areas beyond just the original Web server. ApacheCon 2000 was the first official Apache conference, presented by the Foundation itself rather than an outside vendor.
<br><br>Since the Apache Software Foundation is quite distributed, with developers and contributors from several countries and software deployed world-wide, it was determined that the ongoing ApacheCon events would likewise be distributed around the globe. Accordingly, the next conference after the April one, <a href="http://apachecon.com/2000/EU/" target="_top" rel="nofollow">ApacheCon 2000 Europe</a>, was held in London, England in October of 2000. The third ASF-offered ApacheCon, <a href="http://apachecon.com/2001/US/" target="_top" rel="nofollow">ApacheCon 2001</a>, was in Santa Clara, California, USA. The fourth was to be in Dublin, Ireland, but the then-production company (Camelot Communications) went bankrupt.
<br><br>There was a hiatus until November of 2002, at which point we began having annual U.S. conferences again, managed by a different production company. Conference activity outside the U.S. didn't resume until July of 2005, when S&S Verlag was retained to produce it.
<br><br>The current plan is to continue this trend, holding two ApacheCon conferences per year -- one in the United States and the other somewhere else in the world.

We were thrilled to receive birthday wishes from so many members from the Apache community from across the world.
<br><br>Our festivities will continue at ApacheCon US (Oakland, California), where we will be holding the Big Feather Birthday Bash and related community events during the conference. We anticipate seeing many of you there!
<br><br>Some of you are unable to join us in person, but we don't want you to miss out on the fun. As such, we're inviting our global community to "Raise a Glass to Apache" and celebrate this landmark event at your own local gathering. Recognizing Apache developers and users as part of the ASF's 10th Anniversary is very important to us. We want you to join the fun, meet other Apache enthusiasts, make new friends, put faces to the names behind those emails, and, of course, engage in all things Apache.
<br><br>We understand that communities have their own local culture and preferences: you are welcome to host the type of event best suited to your needs. Preferably, this will take place during the week of ApacheCon (2-6 November, 2009; the Big Feather Birthday Bash is on Wednesday, 4 November) — your event can be held on any day of that week, at any time of the day or night that is most convenient for you. Events include but are not limited to:

<br>- Tech Talks – individual or industry presentations given about ASF projects and actvities
<br>- Product Demos – showcasing how Apache technologies are powering creative and robust solutions
<br>- Hackathon – collaborating on Apache code bases with ASF Committers
<br>- MeetUps or GetTogethers – featuring talks or presentations on a specific Apache Project or activity
<br>- Networking and Job Match – connecting developers with users, employers with potential hires, clients with contractors/consultants, etc.
<br><br>Can't wait until ApacheCon? That's OK: we're always up for a celebration, so feel free to get started as soon as you'd like — you can Raise a Glass to Apache at an upcoming conference such as the OpenWorld Forum (Paris), SpringOne 2GX (New Orleans), CPOSC 2009 (Harrisburg, PA), FOSS4G 2009 (Sydney), NLUUG Open Web (Amsterdam), UTOSC 2009 (Sandy, UT), and OSMC 2009 (Nürnberg), among others.
<br><br>So let's get started! There are three steps to make your event happen:
<br><br>Step 1: Organize. Decide who will be the host(s)/main point(s) of contact, where the event will be held, the day and time, the format, and any costs.
<br><br>Step 2: Publicize. Spread the word to your coworkers, the press, and your friends. Post details on your event on blogs, mailing lists, event listings, etc. Drive enthusiasm by discussing the event details to the media and on podcasts. Ask people who will be there to invite other groups who may be interested.
<br><br>Step 3: Apprise. Share your goodwill with the Apache community. Wish the ASF a happy anniversary on the Foundation blog; post photos of your event online; and submit a "MyApache" video tribute (can be one or more of the following -- 1-2 minutes describing why you love Apache; 1-2 minutes of your group Raising a Glass to Apache/singing Happy Birthday; 2-5 minutes describing the cool ways you use ASF technologies ... be sure to mention which Apache projects you use as well as your results.)
<br><br>The important thing is to have fun! Get inspired by checking out the ASF's YouTube channel at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/TheApacheFoundation" target="_top" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/user/TheApacheFoundation</a>. "MyApache" submissions received by 2 October (midnight US Pacific time/GMT-8) will receive priority consideration to be featured in the ASF's ApacheWay channel and at the Big Feather Birthday Bash!

<br><br>The ASF comprises some of the most active and recognized developers in the Open Source community. By bringing together the pioneers, developers, and users of flagship Open Source technologies, ApacheCon provides an influential platform for dialogue, between the speaker and the audience, between project contributors and the community at large, traversing a wide range of ideas, expertise, and personalities.
<br><br>ApacheCon welcomes submissions from like-minded delegates across many fields, geographic locations, and areas of development. The breadth and loosely-structured nature of the Apache community lends itself to conference content that is also somewhat loosely-structured. <br><br>ApacheCon US to hold new BarCamp at 2008 conference and host
<br>Voluntourism Day
<br><br><br>New Orleans, LA – July 30, 2008 - ApacheCon US, the official user
<br>conference of The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), will host new
<br>features at this year's US conference to bring the Apache community
<br>closer together, including a new BarCamp, a Voluntourism Day, and the
<br>social networking site CrowdVine. The conference schedule has been
<br>published and registration is open. Register by August 15 to receive
<br>Early Bird discount prices.
<br><br>The Apache Open For Business (OFBiz) Symposium is co-locating with
<br>ApacheCon US, bringing a new community of users to the event.
<br>Attendees will be able to mix-and-match the tracks from both
<br>conferences and have the opportunity to network with submitters,
<br>experts, and users.
<br><br>New at ApacheCon is BarCampApache, (November 4). The BarCamp will be
<br>the first Apache-focused, participant-driven unconference, gathering
<br>people interested in The ASF and its various projects to share and
<br>learn in an open environment. BarCampApache will be intense with
<br>discussions, demos and interaction from participants packed into an
<br>ad-hoc event. The BarCamp is free, but due to limited space,
<br>pre-registration is required.
<br><br>A special added feature of ApacheCon is Camp Hadoop, (November 6-7).
<br>Camp sessions will focus on Apache Hadoop, the platform being utilized
<br>by organizations to deliver petabyte scale computing and storage on
<br>commodity hardware, and by academic and industrial research groups to
<br>teach data parallel computing. Hadoop developers and users will
<br>review new projects and case studies of Hadoop applications while
<br>participating in interactive discussions on the platform's future.
<br><br>For the first time ApacheCon will host a Voluntourism Day on November
<br>8, a day focused on lending a hand to the New Orleans area. The ASF
<br>has always emphasized "community over code" and now it will put that
<br>motto into action by assisting and supporting another community in
<br>need. Full details on the Voluntourism Day will be announced in
<br>September.
<br><br>"New Orleans is still in many ways suffering from the aftereffects of
<br>Hurricane Katrina. Our goal is to utilize The ASF's ideals of openness
<br>and collaboration to embrace the city's people and culture and work
<br>together to bring change. We have a truly dedicated community writing
<br>Open Source code and we hope our participants will stay to support the
<br>Voluntourism Day," said Lars Eilebrecht, Vice President of Conference
<br>Planning, ASF.
<br><br>Prior to this year's conference, ApacheCon US will create a social
<br>networking platform to help attendees, speakers, and sponsors to

<br>sponsorship from leading tech organisations, signifying greater
<br>awareness, interest and investment in Open Source technology in
<br>Europe.
<br><br><br>Amsterdam - 29 April 2008 - ApacheCon Europe, the official
<br>conference of The Apache Software Foundation, has announced that the
<br>2008 event, held in April, attracted higher than ever attendance
<br>figures, with 496 registered attendees for this year's event.
<br>This figure represents an increase of more than 40% over the
<br>previous year, demonstrating the rapidly growing interest in Open
<br>Source software amongst European businesses.
<br><br>Further proof of the increasing take-up of Open Source technology
<br>was demonstrated by the fact that all of the pre-conference training
<br>sessions, including the new two-day training events, were nearly
<br>sold out. The conference also attracted a larger number of sponsors
<br>this year, including several high profile partners such as Google,
<br>Hewlett Packard, and Yahoo!.
<br><br>Lars Eilebrecht, Vice President of Conference Planning, Apache
<br>Software Foundation said, "The success of this year's ApacheCon
<br>Europe provides a clear signal that Open Source technology is now a
<br>significant component of the European IT landscape. Organisations

<br>abstract and objectives (200 words or less); intended audience and
<br>maximum number of participants, with background knowledge expected of
<br>the participants (Trainings only); and speaker bio (100 words or less).

<br>(www.evansdata.com), the number of developers using Open Source software
<br>in Asia has jumped by 40% over the past three years. The popularity of the
<br>Linux operating system has also boomed in recent years, providing the
<br>region's developing countries with a free and robust alternative to
<br>leading commercial operating systems.
<br><br>Justin Erenkrantz, President of The Apache Software Foundation, said,

<br>communities in emerging countries with the OS Summit Asia 2007

<br>submit session proposals no later than 13th July 2007. All speakers and
<br>trainers will be provided with up to 7 nights in the Le Meridian Hotel
<br>at Cyberport. To create an experience of an open source community in
<br>action we are providing speakers and trainers with the opportunity of
<br>staying for the entire week of conference. And the flight allowance for
<br>those coming in from a distance is 1300 USD.

<br>November 26-30 at the Cyberport in Hong Kong. This joint conference
<br>between the Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation will
<br>be consist of two days of tutorials (Nov 26-27) and three days of
<br>regular conference sessions (Nov 28-30).
