Re: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck! The rejection of your tarot deck is pretty lame tho. Especially to anybody that's seen the sales videos for the "wobble" apps that became popular a few months ago. L8r, Paul Kat Black wrote: Thanks for the heads-up. Re: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck! My advice - make a trivial change related to the issue (say,
add a little blur over the area, or something) and resubmit. Most likely your resubmission goes to a different person that did the original, and just as the first one was arbitrarily overzealous, the next one probably won't be. Rinse and repeat until you get the answer you want. This seems stupid, but I've seen it more or less work. I think the best likelihood to getting this problem actually fixed? Everyone iPhone developer who goes to WWDC should be loud and obnoxious about the issue. Apple management generally don't spend much time reading develope blogs and such, and tend to write it off as a few people whining, but when people harrass them in person and collectively, they might start to see this as the huge problem it is. The problem would be significantly helped with an actual appeal process or similar, so particularly stupid decisions like this one can be re-assessed. RE: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck!If you're going to lobby, please lobby for codification. The biggest problem I see is inconsistency - there's no way to know if your app will be accepted _before_ you've gone to the time and expense of developing and submitting it. As Kat says, not even the presence of a hundred other apps doing the same thing is any guarantee.

Codification would be terrific But my experience of Apple management is that you are unlikely to get them to change their mind on overall strategy if they are set on something else.... but you can convince them that there is a big problem that they should do *something* about. I also expect that codification would just lead to the rules being changed post-facto once they decided they really didn't like something. I also think that there are probably aspects that Apple simply isn't willing to talk about -- some categories of app that they might be convinced to do by the right partner, but not through the submission process but via the sort of negotiation independent developers are unlikely to get the chance to engage in, for example. Unfortunately, I'm not going to WWDC myself, so it will be up to others. But I hope people make a lot of noise about this issue. Re: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck!- If you offered different card sets on a website as content right now, would that violate the SDK?
Touchstone Tarot already exists as a printed deck, not sure if it would violate the SDK by offering card sets on a site, but the card are also up on 78friends.com. i.e. its an existing product. If anyone has other questions they would like put forward, I will try, although I'm not totally focussed on iPhone stuff. |

RE: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck!Might be a bit difficult to do a really good job for something as subjective as nudity - though it'd be very easy for it to be a whole a lot better than it is - but I was thinking of other criteria too. My biggest question is what constitutes valid API access and what doesn't, something much easier to codify and almost completely neglected. The camera APIs are notorious for this: the official API is atrocious to the point that basically noone is using it, but apps get rejected seemingly at random for using the same alternative techniques as everyone else.
They've gone a whole lot of effort in explaining their user-interaction guidelines, and barely any at all for the various other criteria. :( ________________________________________ From: Andy Dent [dent@...] Sent: Friday, May 01, 2009 12:41 PM To: pigmi@... I suspect varying content from your own site downloads, user entry or the forthcoming app store content may be the answer - Apple may be more willing to have categories of content rather than on the initial app store. Codification is harder than coding - frankly they *do* have rules at present, they just don't have any which are sufficiently finely defined that you can say whether a breast on a "classical nude" is over the line or not. My deck contains no more nudity that the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck that is used in pretty much every other iPhone Tarot App. These pics have been hanging in public galleries for a couple of centuries now, how could they possibly offend anyone? It's not like they're in a sexual context either - its a Tarot deck, they always have a bit of nudity. I think we can add this to the list of "What In The World Is Going On in the App Store Approvals Process?". Should I censor the pics to get it in the Store? Hi there Apple Store assessors, The only 'sexual' content is the breasts shown in a couple of cards, eg The Star: http://www.78friends.com/The_Star . This is traditional for those cards and shown in EVERY Tarot App already in the App Store using the Rider Waite Smith deck (ie, pretty much all of the existing tarot apps). eg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RWS_Tarot_17_Star.jpg Such portrayals are mainstream art, shown in public art galleries around the world. For example, the nude in my Star card is on public display at the Galleria Borghese, Rome. how in the world could such a picture be 'objectionable' as per the SDK Agreement? Re: Apple Store App Refusal - for classical nudes included in Tarot Deck! Apples censorship of iPhone apps got to its ridiculous
extreme recently with Eucalyptus, an ebook reader app that was refused because one of the books that it could load from project Gutenberg was the Kama Sutra. http://www.blog.montgomerie.net/whither-eucalyptus The good thing is that it looks like the decision is reversed. Someone from Apple contacted them, the decision was reversed. The question is, will the decision carry over to cases like Kats classical nude tarot app? It might be worth contacting James, the author of Eucalytptus. http://www.blog.montgomerie.net/hither-eucalyptus Cheers David --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: pigmi-unsubscribe@...
