<br><br>Unfortunately, this was a user problem. I had correctly installed
<br>"Aquamacs Emacs.app" in the Applications directory, but was using a
<br>previous (renamed) "Emacs.app". My bad. My preference for calling it
<br>(plain, old, unqualified) "emacs" was an optimization that prevented
<br>me from seeing that the new installation worked as it should.

<br>buffer open, and I've apparently gotten so used to double-pressing tab

<br>strike, not happening inherently due to the first tab. Hiding the
<br>outdated *Completions* buffer just made me conscious of this.
<br><br>For what it's worth, I'd prefer after a partial completion to update
<br>the contents rather than to hide it and require the second tab, or at
<br>least an option to configure it this way. Maybe this is an issue to

<br><br>Since both left and right option keys are treated the same, there is no
<br>perfect solution for having access to Ctrl, meta, super and special
<br>character (nil, passed to the system). Enabling xxx-keyboard emulation is
<br>not better; polish keyboard uses Option-x for ź character.
<br><br>the NSEvent modifierFlags have additional bits for differentiating between
<br>left and right option and command key, thus allowing for using left option
<br>as meta, and right option as special character key.
<br><br>Attached is a proof of concept implementation. Basically it defines a new
<br>variable: ns-right-alternate-modifier, by default set to none which just
<br>falls back to ns-alternate-modifier.
<br>However, You can have ns-alternate-modifier set to 'meta, and
<br>ns-right-alternate-modifier set to nil -- which makes right option key
<br>passed to mac os x to generate special characters.
<br><br>I know that maybe this patch should go to emacs mailing list first, but
<br>perhaps general emacs mailing list members have better things to do than
<br>evaluate this.
<br><br>Please share Your thoughts about this patch. At the beginning I tried to
<br>implement all four possibilities (left/right option/command overrides) but
<br>after looking at the code I found it too invasive to implement in an
<br>elegant fashion.
<br><br>Also note that I failed to add ns-right-alternate-modifier to customization
<br>interface: After hour of grepping and find-tagging I couldn't find where
<br>ns-alternate-modifier defcustom actually takes place. There are also some
<br>aliases for it, but I couldn't find customize information for them neither.

<br>way. When it broke, it would still launch. The icon appeared in the
<br>Dock, and the menu bar changed to the Aquamacs menu items, but no

<br>"error" sound and nothing happened. No windows appeared. Same thing
<br>when I did "Aquamacs->About Aquamacs Emacs". None of the menu items
<br>would cause a menu to appear except one: "Aquamacs->Check for
<br>updates", which caused a window to appear that said "2.0preview3 is
<br>the most recent Aquamacs version available".
<br><br>It happens that I have 2.0preview3 installed in /Applications, and a
<br>2.0dev installed in my home directory. Both of them exhibited the
<br>same behavior. This made me suspect my OS environment or my Aquamacs
<br>startup files. By process of elimination, I found that if I deleted ~/
<br>Library/Preferences/Aquamacs Emacs/frame-positions.el, normal behavior
<br>was restored.
<br><br>I carry my laptop back and forth between home and work. I have
<br>external monitors at home and work. Usually, I just use the external
<br>monitors and leave the laptop cover closed. Yesterday I was starved
<br>for screen real estate, so for the first time I opened my laptop so
<br>that I could use both the 15" laptop screen and a 20" external monitor
<br>at the same time. Mac laptops can do this even if the two displays
<br>are different sizes. It behaves like one large, oddly shaped
<br>display. The mouse moves from one window to the other, you can move
<br>windows right off the edge of one display and onto the other, have a
<br>window partially visible on both displays, etc.
<br><br>After several hours of work, I had several Aquamacs frames open. I
<br>moved them from display to display as needed, without thinking about
<br>it. I quit Aquamacs and restarted, and it was unusable, as described
<br>above. It seems that frame-postions.el got very confused, and
<br>Aquamacs began thinking that it should display windows somewhere
<br>outside the display space. Whenever it tried, I heard an error noise,
<br>but nothing appeared on my displays.

<br>display space without telling Aquamacs. The scary thing was, when I
<br>disconnected my external monitor and rebooted the laptop, hoping to
<br>"reset" to some working state, Aquamacs was still catatonic. It
<br>didn't work until I deleted the frame-positions.el file.
<br><br>I don't yet know exactly how to avoid the problem, but at least I know
<br>how to fix it. I pity the next poor soul that it happens to :-)
