Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPDear All,
I have probelm to excute RIS 2.0 that enclosed with original package under Windows XP system. On the other hand, I found one patch on Lego officical site, but it doesn't work when I installed it. And, seems that patch is not for that purpose. Can anyone help me to this issue? Either tell where I can download the proper patch or full installer? You reply would be much appreciated & great thanks! Alan |

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPI have probably the same problem? Get the error message:
A critical error has occurred. You may be running out of memory, or you may need to reinstall Robotics Invention System 2.0 I think a Windows update patch has done the thing, since it used to run on one of my XP pc's but suddenly stopped working and I now get the same error when installed it on another pc. I hope LEGO realizes that it is not fair nor acceptable to their customers if they abandon RCX support in the future - taking the huge installed base into consideration Regards Morten In lugnet.robotics, Alan0722 <ac0722@...> wrote: > Dear All, > > I have probelm to excute RIS 2.0 that enclosed with original package under > Windows XP system. Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPI ran into this problem 2 weeks ago when trying to deploy a new software
image to 2 of my labs at work. The installs in the two build images both worked the first time and then started giving the error mentioned below. So far as I have been able to tell it is not a file permissions or registry related problem. Once in this state even uninstalling and reinstalling does not seem to help. These images were built from scratch and have all available MS updates installed. Since I needed the Mindstorms software up and running asap I abandoned the image and manually installed the software on 14 machines in one of the labs. Every machine worked flawlessly every time they were used throughout a 3 day camp. Most of the machines only had SP2 installed but two had SP3 and all critical updates installed. When installing the Mindstorms software I installed both the tower patch and the hyperthreading patch. I plan to investigate this more as I need to still go back and fix my two build images. So far I have not found anything on the net about it. If anyone finds something please post it in this thread (where I will also post anything I find). Lego Robotics in NSW schools AustraliaHello Everyone, I have been given the task to set up a middle school
(Year 9/10) robotics course in a new school in NSW, Australia. I been doing a bit of research recently and came across this mailing list. I have been reviewing the comments sent, most are over my head, however I hope they we come in handy as I gain knowledge and work through the NXT system. I was wondering whether everyone on the list is from Aust. or better still NSW and how you have incorporated the robotics into a Board Of Studies subject. In particular, I was hoping that some kind person/s out there may have a course set up that I could get a copy to get me started. I would greatly appreciated any help received. Thanks Stuart |

RE: Lego Robotics in NSW schools AustraliaHello Stuart, My name is Dan Brush from Woodbury Vermont, USA, we are also
setting up a first - year team here and I have been in Couch with FIRST directly and they have put me in touch with some teams in the neighboring state of New Hampshire. I'll pass along info when I meet with them. Our team is meeting several times over our summer break to familiarize themselves with the Lego system and our librarian has ordered some books which have some robotic animals the kids can build as part of this. Please feel free to contact me----- Dan Brush -----Original Message----- From: Stuart Young [mailto:syoung42@...] Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:39 AM Cc: lego-robotics@... Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPI had this error message on a Vista system. RIS 2.0 worked fine the first time
I ran it, but gave this error every subsequent time (even if I uninstalled/reinstalled it). Memory definitely wasn't an issue since the system had 4GB RAM plus swap space. The same thing happened on a second system (also Vista Ultimate). I was able to get it working by deleting the file "Ris 2.0.mov.#res" from the local Temp directory. On Vista this was C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp\Ris 2.0.mov.#res. On XP I'd guess it would be something like C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Temp. If not there, try a search for the file and delete it. You need to delete this file every time you want to run the program so it may be worth scripting. Hope this helps. regards johng In lugnet.robotics, Morten Høgholm Pedersen wrote: > I have probably the same problem? Get the error message: > > A critical error has occurred. I saw on the Lego website that this is because of a recent Quicktime version, but once again the software ran perfectly on the first run.. I looked in the temp folder but cannot find anything. Any ideas? Thanks Luca |

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPOk I'll do that. Lego support has always been very helpful in the past :)

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPI had two laptops giving me that same error: "A critical error has occurred. You may be running out of memory, or you may need to reinstall Robotics Invention System 2.0." It must have been a recent Windows update that messed them up, as these computers worked just a few weeks ago.
Here's what I did to get them working again: 1. Log onto your computer as Administrator, or an account with Administrative privileges. 2. Browse to your RIS 2.0 install directory. I believe the default is C:\Program Files\LEGO MINDSTORMS\RIS 2.0\ 3 a. Right-Click LaunchRis2.exe. 3 b. Select the "Compatibility" tab. 3 c. Select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME". 4 a. Browse to C:\Program Files. 4 b. Right-click the LEGO MINDSTORMS folder, go to the Security tab. 4 c. Click "add". Under "Enter the object names to select" type "Everyone" and click "OK". 4 d. Under the "group or user name" list on the Security tab, select "Everyone" and ensure that the "Full Control" box is checked under "Permissions". Click OK. 5 a. Click Start -> Search -> All Files & Folders. Under "advanced option" ensure that "Search all files and folders" is checked off. 5 b. Search for "2.0.mov.#res" and delete every instance of the file that occurs. Reboot. On one of my laptops a newer version of QuickTime was installed, which was also prompting a QuickTime error. I uninstalled it, and installed QuickTime 6.5.2 from http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=quicktime Ensure RIS 2.0 runs under an administrator account, and under non-administrator accounts. Please let me know if this works - it worked on my two machines, but I can't guarantee it will work for everyone else.

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPHi all,
If your RIS 2.0 freezes under Windows XP when it tries to detect the USB IR tower, install this patch : http://cache.lego.com/downloads/education/tower164.zip |

Re: Lots of gratitudeDear Brahm,
We know we are not supposed to do this on this forum, but we shall do it anyways because our gratitude towards you is more intense than just a 5 star rating. We have been trying to make our RIS 2.0 software and hardware work for many and many hours. Your tips , combined with other patches and apps, have finally led us to achieving our goal. We will now be able to power our insane robot project and be able to program it. Many thanks from Montreal, Canada, and we wish you the best for 2011! Felix and Laurent |

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPI know what the answer to this one is! I solved the "A critical error has occurred" problem with Robotics Invention System 2.0 by uninstalling QuickTime and installing the QuickTime version from the RIS 2.0 disk. Don't forget to delete the QuickTimeUpdater.exe or you will be doing this again!
Good luck!

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPThrere are two fixes to the "A critical error has occurred" problem.
One fix is to uninstall the latest Quicktime and install the older Quicktime version from the RIS CD (or any Quicktime version older than version 7). Another fix (described earlier in this thread) is to remove the file "Ris 2.0.mov.#res" from the local Temp directory right before starting the RIS software. I use the following batch file to do this. -------------------------------- @echo off echo this script runs the RIS LEGO Robot software echo after deleting a temporary movie file that interferes with Quicktime working correctly del "%temp%\RIS 2.0.mov.#res" set dir=%PROGRAMFILES%\LEGO MINDSTORMS\RIS 2.0 if exist "%dir%" goto DOIT set dir=%PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\LEGO MINDSTORMS\RIS 2.0 if exist "%dir%" goto DOIT echo did not find any RIS installation goto END :DOIT echo found "%dir%" cd "%dir%" LaunchRis2.exe :END -------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Putz www.RoboticsLearning.com |

Re: Asking for RIS 2.0 patch under Windows XPDear Mr. Putz:
I am having the same problem of "A critical error has occurred" with Widows Vista. I have deleted the "Ris 2.0mov.#res" file but the same critical error occurs. Any suggestions?
