Assigning from Schemas with a Choice

When a schema includes a <choice/>, I have a lot of trouble creating an <Assign/> in a BPEL that assigns FROM one of the elements inside the choice.  "Selection failure" is the typical result.

What is the right way to assign from an part of the <choice/> ?
