Hi all,

Just to remind you that RAatE is fast approaching and that you need to get your registration in now(ish) to guarantee a place. There are some great papers, keynotes (this is the only UK 'date' to see Dr Scherer for example), training and exhibition this year. This is also the only opportunity to meet and network with like minded people and services from the UK (i.e. the people on this list).

Keynote speakers are Dr Marcia Sherer and Dr Carrie Britton. Dr. Scherer is President, Institute for Matching Person & Technology and author of "Living in the State of Stuck: How Assistive Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities". Dr Britton trained as an occupational therapist in rheumatology and now works to improve the design, delivery and standards of services for families of children with disabilities or long term illness.

Training sessions will focus on current AT education provision, an introduction to Trusted Assessor training and Digital Inclusion. Presentations will cover a wide range of topics including computer access, telecare, location awareness, wheelchair design and AT for people with learning disabilities.

The only problems that have been encountered with care line systems and
broadband telephone services, with perhaps one exception, have all been
traced back to the incorrect installation of either or both ... I have attached
an example below. The advisory message following this was sent to Hackney
Social Services in an attempt to prevent future difficulties.

It should be standard procedure to connect a community telephone alarm
to a telephone master socket, however from my experience, for a
community alarm to be correctly connected would seem to be optional -
definitely not the rule!

On Tuesday this week I visited a client where once again the community
alarm had been incorrectly wired.
Hackney Telecare have confirmed that the community telephone alarm
should not have been connected in this manner and are to visit the
client to remedy the situation.

A key function of a community alarm telephone is that it should be able
to disconnect all other telephones and any call that may be in progress
and seize control of the telephone line to make an emergency call.
However, a community telephone alarm can only do this providing it is
the ONLY device connected to the telephone master socket and all other
telephone extensions are taken from the community telephone alarm.

Experience suggests that the location of a community alarm telephone
within a residence tends to determine how an alarm telephone is
connected. A community alarm telephone is usually placed at or near the
central point within a client's home, however, if the selected location
for the alarm is not near the master telephone socket then the community
alarm may be (incorrectly) connected to a telephone extension socket
instead. This is easier for whoever is performing the installation, as
correct fitting requires running a telephone cable between the alarm
telephone and the master telephone socket and then re-connecting all
existing telephone extension sockets to the community alarm. Typically
the telephone output from a community alarm telephone has a Ringer
Equivalence Number (REN) value of 2 so it may not support all the
telephony devices previously connected to the master telephone socket
(which should have a REN of 4). However, the REN value of a telephone
line can be increased by purchasing what is known as a 'REN Extender' -
most will increase the REN value to 8. A REN Extender should be fitted
between the community alarm telephone and all other telephone extension
sockets within the home. The typical cost of a REN Extender is around
40 pounds.
[ For those readers unfamiliar with REN values then please refer to the
note on REN at the bottom of this message. ]

The correct connection of community alarm telephone is something that
seems to be overlooked but can easily be checked; there is a simple test
that may be performed to check whether a telecare community alarm
telephone is connected to the master telephone socket in a client's
residence as follows:

(1) First, remove all the handsets from ALL the telephones in a client's
house and place each handset beside its respective telephone.

(2) Second, trigger the community alarm, despite all the removed
handsets, it should be possible to get through the community alarm call
centre.

(3) If any or all of the telephone handsets have to be replaced to get a
connection to the community alarm call centre then the community alarm
telephone is NOT the only device connected to the master telephone
socket and the provider or installer of the alarm should be contacted to
remedy the situation.

(4) If connection is made to the community alarm call centre without
replacing any or all telephone handsets within a residence then the
community alarm telephone is the only device wired to the telephone
master socket (and all other telephone extensions are taken from the
community telephone alarm).
NB: If all is well with the client then be sure to reassure the
community alarm call centre staff that the call is a test and that there
is no emergency. Be prepared to give your name and position as all
community alarm calls are routinely logged; failure to satisfy call
centre staff as to the nature of the call may result in the dispatch of
an emergency service.

(5) When testing is complete, ensure that all telephone handsets have
been replaced.

IMPORTANT: In any residence, where a single telephone line is fitted,
there is ONLY ONE MASTER TELEPHONE SOCKET!!!

NOTE:

Ringer Equivalence Number (REN)

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN)
which is used to calculate the number of items that may be connected to
any one telephone line. Although it is possible to have any number of
telephone extension sockets, it is important to limit the number of
telephones and other items including faxes, answer machines and modems,
connected to the telephone sockets connected to a single telephone line
within a home. Every telephone or item connected to the telephone has a
REN, usually displayed on the base of the device (near to the green
approval sticker) or in the user manual for the device. Most telephones
have a REN of 1, but some faxes and modems may have a REN of more than
1.

To check that the REN limit is not exceeded, add up the REN numbers of
all the devices connected to a single telephone line anywhere in a
residence - the total should not exceed 4. It is likely that technical
problems will be encountered (with equipment not working or ringing very
quietly) if you exceed the REN limit of 4. If some or all of the
telephones fail to ring or some ring very weakly then try unplugging
devices one at a time until they work.

Is it me, or are they slowly replacing all the NOS that had 'assistive' in their title with less specific ones (see below)?

This is what I get [1] when searching for 'assistive' now. Much less relevant than previously.

I'm not sure what impact, if any, this has on us, but it doesn't seem very good?

You can use a Possum Pager with a radio transmitter which you can plug a switch into. I have used these with success. I have also used the adapted doorbell with success. I tend to suggest that people do a test each day to ensure the switch is accessible and that everything is working for an attention calling system to reduce risk of batteries running out etc.

Possum requirements:
HC401 - Pager2 code 034-436 £233 each
HC402 - Triple Radio Transmitters code 034-614 £218 each
HC501C - Charger code 034-541 £61 each

Obviously more expensive than doorbell.

If you are maintain this yourselves, then I would have thought that, given that you will be able to re-use this, that the balance total-cost-of-ownership/reliability/low battery warning would be better with a switch accessible pager (Mini3/Possum Pager/Trex)? I have been impressed with the Trex pagers in terms of range, batteries etc, though I am not so impressed with the price and the slightly bodgy solution for switch access...

Sorry, what I meant was to use the tool to create the CSS and then
check out the code so you can see what it's doing. So you can get
started with a working file and go on from there. Kind of like demo

Neil

Last week we attached a flying lead with a 3.5mm socket on to the pushbutton of a Unicomm door chime from Maplin (£12). Its a bit of a bodge but it’s just so cheap that you can’t ignore it!

Disadvantages:

The chime tone may not be appropriate
Sometimes the attachment of a lead can slug a radio transmitter, so it doesn’t work.
Not terrifically robust
Can be unreliable around fridges, radiators & other large conductors

My client didn’t like any of the chimes – he’s currently using a whooping siren from a kids bike! Were going with a RS buzzer in this case.

Yes it’s a complex situation. The seizures are apparently very predictable in type and timing – breathing difficulties in the early hours of the morning and the family member is apparently well-tuned to the pattern, and also feels that there is time to respond within the current set up. Broadband is not currently set up and there are no PCs and managing PCs would be am on-going headache in this situation, but I may need to propose these if no-one can help be id a suitable system. Regarding Walkie Talkies I haven’t yet found one that offers an option for a continuously open channel. Family-member confidence is key here and sound-activation does not seem to suffice.

I sympathise with the family as I have personal experience of the situation. From my experience epilepsy detectors don’t pick up every seizure – they each have their own quirks & each seizure is slightly different in sound or movement. I can understand the insistence on live sound - I’m not sure how, but mothers seem tuned in to the critical noises that are important for the care of their offspring!

How about a walkie-talkie type radio, or a link through Skype or MS Netmeeting?

Having said that, is this about letting go? What action will she take if she hears a seizure a couple of hundred yards away? Perhaps she will rush round in the middle of the night? Is that fast enough?

I have a client who has a family member with epilepsy and they are in need of a monitoring system. Her experience is that none of the standard epilepsy monitoring sensor(s) are reliable enough and that the only sound gives her a reliable alert and she has always relied on a baby monitor. It is a night time problem only. The family member has recently moved to a block of flats a couple of hundred yards from the family home and none of the digital baby monitor systems are capable of reliable transmission. I have suggested phone dialler systems triggered by sound, which could be linked to a dedicated mobile phone that would also give her more freedom to roam, but she insists that it has to be real-time sound monitoring – at the moment she sleeps in a camp bed in her family member’s living room with a baby monitor – the situation is rapidly becoming untenable.

I think that the answer is probably some form of intercom system with a signal booster but I am having difficulties tracking one down. All the standard nurse call-type ones do not allow for a continuously open channel and the only other options that might meet the bill seem to be very expensive covert surveillance systems.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks for the info. There are a few monitor options available that theoretically meet the need, but unfortunately none of the standard off-the-shelf baby monitors will meet my transmission concerns. The transmission is from a house to a block of flats approx 200m away with no direct line of site. I think I will need a booster system with externally mounted boosters, but I can’t currently id a suitable candidate.

I have an angelcare baby monitor for my daughter that seems to work pretty well. You can have it set to real time sound monitoring or to only activate to human speech/sounds, it also has a temperature alert if the temp is too high or low and comes with a sensor pad that goes under the mattress so that if the baby is still (or not breathing) for more than 20 seconds, it sounds an alarm. Not sure how useful a feature that would be for someone with epilepsy however. There are quite a few video baby monitors out there as well with good night cameras, though from reading reviews, I think a lot of them are pretty prone to interference.

Neel is correct, you need to remove the <STYLE> sections if it's an
external .css file.
You have duplicate entries for BODY.
You have an orphan section - the second { section.
Every style rule must end with a semicolon - you miss a couple out.
No space between the exclamation character and important where you use it.

Finally, shameless plug time. If you install WebbIE you'll find a
program called I.E. Appearance Editor. This provides a simple UI to
let you choose font size, zoom, and colours, and creates the
appropriate CSS file and configures IE to use it:

I think there are contenders other than Sony which are, arguably, better with somewhat easier buttons for direct access Lisa. Steve mentioned some but I can't remember their names now.

Also, I don't know if it's a common problem but one thing I noticed when I downloaded a couple of free e-books were that quite a lot of the text was gobbledegook gobbledygook illegible.

This would be very useful to several of my clients, one of whom was so wanting one she was going to look at see if any of them had decent enough buttons that she could dib with a mouthstick (although practically and posturally this would be a nightmare for her!).

Hi

Tony and a Remap chap have just been demo-ing a Remap switch adapted Sony E Reader that has been linked into an Activ 500. It was great.

We were talking about it and the Remap engineer said that it was V V difficult to switch adapt it (ask Tony why). I was wondering if there is any merit in ACT trying to create a marketable version of our own, or to see if there is another sort of e-reader that we could more readily switch adapt??

The e-reader knocks the socks off the page turners, and they seem to be a more feasible solution to many of our clients needs.

At the very least it would be good to see if switch adapting them is something we could do here, and to have one to demo to clients.

What do you think??
