Automatic key positioning to avoid overlap

Is there a way for gnuplot to automatically choose an (inner) position
for the key so that it's not overlapping with the plots (at least for
simple 2D plots), instead of having the user manually specify this
each time or doing the calculations herself?

No.  The only automatic key placements that avoid data are those outside
the graph area.

OK, thanks. Consider this a feature suggestion, then! :)
