Didn't get a chance to make it down to this, unfortunately. Did anyone else get a chance? If so, what sort of prices were the pinball machines going for? I'm always curious as to how much they're selling for now.

We took our friend with us who is a guru of arcade machines and pinballs and the likes.

He said that the prices were ranging from ridiculous to reasonable. Some big big spending at the start on one pinball machine (batman) which went for over 6k I think.. maybe more.

There were a few of bootleg tabletop machines, not really originals.

I think most people wanted one of the 60in1 arcade table tap machines (new), they had tones of them there.

I also think that the auctioneer guy was dyslexic, mixing up lot numbers and getting the order of things wrong, which was slightly amusing.

That analogue dune buggy game looked cool.. I would have liked to play that.

The Simpsons 4 player arcade game would have been top of my shopping list but it was too expensive at around 1k.

So how are they selling these lowboys and cocktail cabinets with Galaga and Space Invader on them?  How do you get a license to sell the machine with valid ROM's in them?

I know you're not allowed to sell MAME in on these machines.

All the ones I have seen (of the n-games-in-one variety) have been knockoff imitation games - i.e. they look *very* similar to Pacman/Galaga/Insert-game-here, but they aren't actually the real deal.

Not saying the same necessarily applies here, but it is one explanation.

Yep, no one cares about copyright here in the industry!!

Bootlegs game boards have been around since the dawn of time and it took them at least 25 years to do something about it for old games.

It wasn’t until about 1988 when the government here started doing anything about it and even then it was piss weak

The games in the lowboys (why would you want a lowboy anyway??! ) have no license and no one really cares in Asia at all.

People like Namco (who make Galaga and Pacman) do keep their old copyrights active but really can’t do too much about it.

Other companies either no longer exist or don’t actively pursue copyright violations.

And then you get other companies like Gaelco who freely give away roms for mame use as they are not making any more money from those games affected…

End essay rant

This is true too, Bart explained to me that in Galaga for example, you know it’s a bootleg because the laser beam from your ship doesn’t change colour on the bootleg but it does change colour on the original.

Also in bootleg pacman, they have slightly different levels..

We also rebooted some of them and you can tell from the boot screen if they are just emulated or original game boards (which you can see from peeking inside anyway)

They games we saw on the (running) older lowboys (not the bubble wrapped new ones) where knockoffs, and not the strictly original game machines. Not that it matters since its practically identical unless you are some kind of pacman aficionado.

Well if aint the real deal what's the point?  I would only like to play
the originals.  There's no nostalgic value in playing a game that's
close to the original.

So I guess the only real hurdle is MAME - is there another emulator that
doesn't stop you from on-selling?
