BETA test for a new Ekiga.org WebSite

Hi,

We decided to improve our Website for Ekiga. It was hard to
manage/update for the Ekiga team and it was not as clear as our visitors
expected it.

We now reached the point were our new website can be more widely tested.

For the visitor, we focused on improving the download experience,
explain what Ekiga is more friendly for non-technophiles and added a
Roadmap for those asking about the future of Ekiga.

The new infrastructure behind the website, which is based on the well
know open source Drupal framework, will allow us to update the content
or the theme of the website much more easily.

Please, visit the new website and provide us feedback before we go
public. We want to provide the best experience possible.

BETA Ekiga.org:
http://ekiga.net/yannick/drupal-6.14/

Best regards,
On behalf of the Ekiga team,
Yannick

Hello Yannick,

On the main page, in the window "Get Ekiga!" the link "Download Ekiga" is
broken: http://ekiga.net/yannick/drupal-6.14/downloads

New site looks clean and to the point - Just thinking that after the
first or second latest release summary* it becomes less useful and you
loose the sense that there is additional info at the bottom. I would
rather see a listing of Ekiga's presence in various distros on the
front page - rather than bottom of the roadmap page, also links to the
debian/ubuntu/fedora etc repos. this would tell me that Ekiga was
broadly available in my favorite ditros and it would also be nice if
it lists the version in each repo. Even if it was just green light for
current release, amber for stale release and red for not in repo.
Snapshots are info for the developer community - which should have a
separate "home" page - as part of Community maybe?

I would also like to see, on the Ekiga.org page, a graph (RRDTool)
and even RSS feed on the status of Ekiga.net - this should be the
"designated offsite" goto notice location to get info on Ekiga.net
when there may be problems. A graph of utilization would also go a
long way in getting some well deserved credit for Ekiga.net.

* a listing of latest minor revision changes followed by a major
revision summary works best IMHO - you could even add a "coming
milestones" section - more of a coming features set than the developer
focus that the raodmap page seams to have.

minor revisions changes summary (3.2.6 specifics & diff back to 3.0)
major revision achievement summary (3.0)
next major revision objectives (4.0)
distro status listing & links
ekiga.net graph & RSS
ekiga.net news

much thx for Ekiga - great stuff! download page made me laugh - Ponies!

Hi,
The new website looks good. Compilation steps in Linux are
well documented; but I think that the same lacks for Windows. Moreover
from then problems which I've been facing since last few days, I also
suggest that some page of FAQs, mail archives, etc. should also be
clearly visible. Details of compilation on Redhat, Fedora are also
insufficient. Screenshots should also show multi user conference.
These are merely my suggestions; No intentions of being
offensive :-)).

Already a great improvement!!!!!
A few small things though.
1 - Community page says "You can subscribe on the right of this page" - it would be better, perhaps, to say "See below for mailing list information" - There is no subscribe info on the right.

2 - When the site goes live can we have a 'back to Home Page' link on all the wiki pages linked from the new site :
  • Documentation
  • Downloads -> Linux
  • -> snapshots
  • -> source
Or maybe just in the wiki main menu?
(I notice that there is no Fedora paragraph in the wiki/Linux install instructions.)

Obviously a lot of work has gone into the new website - and it shows!
A big pat on the back to everyone.

Everyone seems to move to Drupal now. Make sure you understand the
security aspects of this mammoth. I did a blitz check and it seems
/cron.php is world wide accessible.

Content-wise it seems to be nice. I appreciate the move.

Hi,

The site was empty during the past night, it is now back up again (I
moved it...)

I'm using the zen theming engine for drupal. I find it helpful to start
theming.

Yannick

I agree the idea of being more synthetic about the changes in Ekiga,
especially between majors versions. Its is the point with the scheme
numbering of Ekiga version and the website should reflect that.

It might seems quite simple to do, but it is not. The work of just
writing the changelog from one version to another, even if minor, is
quite time consuming and we are somewhat weak in term of people working
on the project. I must deal in one hand with the people working on the
project and there my goal is to ease the process, in the other hand with
our users needs where your idea seems quite good to me. But with the
actual situation of the software we are using (the current drupal
installation) this would mean even more work for our contributors
because this will require hand-writing it, and I doubt this will work
nicely on the long run.

The situation is not dark, as drupal is like a big framework with a lot
of possibilities, but IMHO its weakness is not dealing well with
"features". e.g. it should not be hard to write the necessary code to
get a revision software handler just like you designed it but drupal do
not provide it "out-of-the-box". I've dig up the question and I thing
using the drupal's modules taxonomy, views and features would help. It
will need some coding time but probably not too long. Unfortunately,
there is other tasks requiring love and being to my eyes more important,
i.e. ekiga.net improvements. I'll do that when I find the time, or if
someone wants to jump in he will be welcome. I will put it on the public
roadmap to do some advertising around it.

I will do something like that for ekiga.net as part of my work on it.
Damien will work on upgrading the software running the server there, we
will see if there is a tool already designated for monitoring it I can
use for the website or if I will need to write it. Still as quality
assurance around ekiga.net is one of our concerns, we will find a
solution soon I think.

Yannick

Distro support is quite hard to achieve. I probably could code something
to get automatically the version of Ekiga available in the main distros.
But for an accurate view of available version outside the main
repositories we will need a contributor for each distro. Please contact
us if you want to give us relevant informations about a distro (any
distro; I speak about "main" distro when I think doing the support
myself but "main" is not much important, it just mean "less work for
me").

Actually 3 members of the team deals with packaging our latest version
for Debian, Ubuntu and windows. You probably do not use one of them; the
green button on the main page automatically detect if you use one of
them (you need javascript enabled in your browser) and present the
visitor a direct link to the relevant information for debian or ubuntu
or windows. For now it is hand written and I plan to have an
administrator interface in Drupal for this feature.

Snapshot is IMHO more important than you think. We need tests and
testers. The more snapshots are tested, the best a release will be. I do
not plan to move it deeper.

Best regards,
Yannick

I did not find out how to change the main menu in the wiki.

The plan is to move the wiki inside Drupal; this will fix the navigation
issue. It might happen even sooner than I first though...

The documentation part, which is now in the wiki, will be reworked as
part of the wiki move to drupal. But it is a huge work I will do after
the Ekiga.net move to Drupal. Unfortunately, none of the core team use
Fedora/Red Hat, thus it is very hard for us to document it... If you
want, you can document this part; ask me and i'll grant you access to
the wiki.

Yannick

The details of compilation are (fortunately!) identical to all the
gnu/linux distributions.  You need to tell us what the compilation
problems you have, I think they are not distribution-related (and might
be no problem after all).

Could you give us a screenshot?

whohas is very handy here.  A small script, such as
whohas ekiga|tr -s " "|cut -d" " -f1,3
executed each night.  Note that there are many distributions, and each
distribution has several versions.

Or, better, at the beginning, we could just put the whole output of
whohas ekiga.  Later, we can improve it.

I tried, and the side bar doesn't seems to catch up...
