Bears in Bear Valley
I know there have been problem bears in the past, dumpster diving, raiding vacant cabins, etc. How big a problem are bears in Bear Valley?

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
if you search this forum, then you should find some bear stories. A bear did invade someones house while someone was in there... apparently jumping on his bed even while he was in it, hard to believe. But that's what was told. SO they are out there, and still I have only seen one, crossing Hwy 4 just above Dorrington, but none ever in the town or surrounding areas. Though as pics on this site indicate, they are out and about.

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
Bob has had another sighting, and one of our Sheriff's report some recent 'activity' at Lake Alpine Lodge. Oh, boy............ here we go! Everyone, be diligent about NOT attracting a bear to your lot/house/site... with food smells, garbage, dog food, or anything remotely attractive to them. Seems some of these guys remember what lies behind doors and shutters.

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
not that I would do such a thing, but it would be an interesting experiment to leave some honey jar open and see how long/if a bear comes avisiting.... on a little hike I took today between houses up to the ridge, I saw plenty of big ole footprints, hoof prints, all kinds of stuff in the mud. I don't claim to be able to identify any of these tracks, but they aren't tiny creatures making these, for sure.

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
Better than waiting to see if they come, how about setting a "trap" so to speak so when a bear does show up, he/she gets a bitter reception, like a snout of pepper spray or amounia(sp?). This would provide negative re-enforcement that these humans are no fun and should be avoided!
By the way, after my bear encounter I went out and bought a "Bear Bell" for hiking solo and soon to get some bear pepper spray.

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
pepper spray sounds like a good alternative... I don't know why the lady did not deploy her spray... doesn't sound iike from any reading that bears are stealthy like mountain cats.
For me the bear bell would annoy me after 5 minutes and I'd throw it off.

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
Yeah Tony, I thought the same - that it would be too annoying. It isn't too bad, it's a little "jingle Bell" that comes with a little sack with a magnet to put into "quiet" mode if one wants. I'm not sure I'd use it all the time because part of the adventure of hiking is the quiteness and the occasional wildlife that one may come upon (like deer). ...and my wife made me do it!

Re: Bears in Bear Valley
lol... quiet mode. too funny. do you have a website link... I'd rather not be surprised by a bear either.
