I created an initial wikipedia article, with much of the content coming from the mapnik faq page.  Wikipedia raised a red flag because of concerns of plagiarism, and asked me to get permission from the authors, or it will be quickly deleted.

It went on the explain that text imported from other sites into Wikipedia articles must be licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) (CC-BY-SA compatible licenses are also accepted, as, of course, is release into public domain). When asking for permission, you should explain that this means that
  1. The text may be freely redistributed and used.
  2. It may be freely modified, and modified versions may also be freely redistributed and used.
  3. In all cases, CC-BY-SA requires proper attribution of the author(s).
  4. CC-BY-SA allows commercial re-uses provided such re-use is also under CC-BY-SA.
By the way I plagiarised the above information from Wikipedia.

If you do not want me to use this text, let me know and I'll delete the article.  If it is okay let me know and I'll take the next step of uploading the text to Commons.

Do you want to show the mapnik logo in the article. If so I need to follow the same procedure to use the image.

Hey James,

great work. I took a crack at making the text a bit more unique from the FAQ (and found some errors of mine in the process! ya right mapnik works on PPC Macs :) ), and took the liberty to delete the warning, since my sense is anyone can remove that other than creator of the page (thanks for spearheading!).

So, looks great, let's just continue to add to it/improve as a group and we should be rolling...

Logo seems reasonable too. Perhaps we need to state the licensing on the logo (which I'm not sure about) somewhere on the Mapnik.org site....
