Bengali Bangladesh (bn-BD) Translation of SquirrelMailHello,
Can someone please help to integrate Bengali Bangladesh translation? Some questions/notes follow: The comment lines at the top of your squirrelmail.po file should look more like the Swedish one (for example). Please have a look at it in sv_SE/LC_MESSAGES/squirrelmail.po and at least put the right language in. Regarding the language code, I want to confirm that Bengali in Bangladesh is in fact different than in India? We do already (as you probably know) have a bn_IN translation. We are moving away from including region codes in the language name in SquirrelMail if there is no reason to have it, so if you object to having the India region in the Bengali translation name, we can remove it. 2009/2/25 Paul Lesniewski <paul@...>
Thanks for informing the issue. Now the language code is added. Please check: http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/squirrelmail_bn_BD_26feb09.tar.bz2 Regarding the language code, I want to confirm that Bengali in Yes, there are differences on spellings, dialects and general terms usage. So we should keep the region codes. You can reply to the list - you don't need to reply to me. >> > Can someone please help to integrate Bengali Bangladesh translation? Please > check: Thank you. Note that the word "LANGUAGE" at the very top of the file should be replaced with the actual language name. Also, please update the copyright to 2009. Also, if you don't mind, can you tell me where you got the original .pot file you translated? As well, if you would, please provide a translated version of the image file found in the main SquirrelMail images directory called sec_remove_eng.png. It can also be found in our repository: http://squirrelmail.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/squirrelmail/trunk/squirrelmail/images/sec_remove_eng.png?view=markup And who should be listed as the official language maintainers? I don't see your name in the translation itself...? I'd need names and email addresses of the maintainers. Finally, in your testing, what did you add to functions/i18n.php? Here is an example for Latvian. Please show what you used. $languages['lv_LV']['NAME'] = 'Latvian'; $languages['lv_LV']['ALTNAME'] = 'Latvių'; $languages['lv_LV']['CHARSET'] = 'utf-8'; $languages['lv_LV']['LOCALE'] = 'lv_LV.UTF-8'; $languages['lv']['ALIAS'] = 'lv_LV'; Note that LOCALE can contain multiple preferences in case the first isn't found, such as: $languages['sv_SE']['LOCALE'] = array('sv_SE.UTF-8','sv_SE'); >> Regarding the language code, I want to confirm that Bengali in >> Bangladesh is in fact different than in India? Looking at what the rest of the free software world does, it looks like many projects (e.g., KDE, Fedora) have a "bn_IN" translation and a "bn" translation, although I do see that Debian also has a "bn_BD" translation. I am not an expert on Bengali, but I just want to make sure we are synchronized with what everyone else is doing. Thanks, we are very pleased to have your contribution! Re: Bengali Bangladesh (bn-BD) Translation of SquirrelMailHi Paul,
2009/3/1 Paul Lesniewski <paul@...> Jamil, Sorry. Actually pressing reply was going only to your email address. So I used, reply all, which included the list too. Now pressing reply is taking me to the list. :)
Now both "LANGUAGE" and copyright information is updated. http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/squirrelmail_bn_BD_09mar09.tar.bz2 Also, if you don't mind, can you tell me where you got the original I used the HEAD branch of bn_IN, where only "squirrelmail.po" was partially translated. http://l10n-stats.squirrelmail.org/HEAD/bn_IN/squirrelmail/index.php As well, if you would, please provide a translated version of the Done. You can use following file: http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/sec_remove_bn_BD.png And who should be listed as the official language maintainers? I Finally, in your testing, what did you add to functions/i18n.php? You can use the content of following file for "bn_BD": http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/lang_info.txt Btw, in bn_IN's setup.php there is an alias for both "bn" and "bn_BD" which needs to be removed. $languages['bn_BD']['ALIAS'] = 'bn_IN'; $languages['bn']['ALIAS'] = 'bn_IN'; Ref: http://squirrelmail.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/squirrelmail/trunk/locales/locale/bn_IN/setup.php?view=markup
Yes, initially we {Ankur, a team consist of Bangladeshi and Indian volunteers for Bengali localization} started with "bn" translation for GNOME, KDE, Fedora etc projects. After the translation reached into a good level, it was forked into "bn" and "bn_IN". Later we did not changed the "bn" translations into "bn_BD". Btw, Bengali is the first official language of Bangladesh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengali_language Thanks, we are very pleased to have your contribution! Thanks for your co-operation! Please let me know if there is anything more to be done. :) Cheers, -Jamil Paul ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apps built with the Adobe(R) Flex(R) framework and Flex Builder(TM) are powering Web 2.0 with engaging, cross-platform capabilities. One thing left -- the string "sec_remove_eng.png" in squirrelmail.po should be translated to "sec_remove_bn_BD". Any 8-bit symbols must be HTML-encoded. As for whether or not "bn" should be aliased to "bn_IN" or "bn_ID", I'm not certain. Do more people use Bengali in Bangladesh or India? India's population being what it is and that it's the second most spoken language there, I'd guess the latter. However, it's the first official language of Bangladesh and your translation is much much more thorough. Do you have reasons for your opinion on this matter? > Btw, in bn_IN's setup.php there is an alias for both "bn" and "bn_BD" which > needs to be removed. > > $languages['bn_BD']['ALIAS'] = 'bn_IN'; > $languages['bn']['ALIAS'] = 'bn_IN'; Yes, I'll remove the alias for "bn_BD", but per above, I'm not yet sure who should get "bn". >> >> Regarding the language code, I want to confirm that Bengali in >> >> Bangladesh is in fact different than in India? Re: Bengali Bangladesh (bn-BD) Translation of SquirrelMail2009/3/12 Paul Lesniewski <paul@...>
Done. Please check: http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/squirrelmail_bn_BD_13mar09.tar.bz2 Also I have updated the png file with red texts. :) http://www.ankur.org.bd/downloads/l10n/squirrelmail/sec_remove_bn_BD.png
Sorry, I have updated the file. Please check again. As for whether or not "bn" should be aliased to "bn_IN" or "bn_ID", According to http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=ben, 100M people of Bangladesh speak Bengali but only 70M in India, and Bengali is the official *national* language of Bangladesh.
Also projects like OpenOffice.org and Debian-Installer use bn for bn-BD. Ref link for OOo: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=50434
Actually we thought/think, as Bengali is the *national* language of Bangladesh and the number of speaker is highest in Bangladesh, bn will go for bn_BD by default. :) OK, it sounds like "bn_BD" is good for SquirrelMail.
