Best GPS for cage while I'm working real estate

Trying to make my livelihood full-time in real estate, I'm looking to
upgrade my tomtom1 GPS.  I've been looking at the Garmin 850, which has been
discontinued, and can be had for about $250.

I really need hands free and voice interactive.  In the northern Virginia
area, traffic is a plus, if it is truly timely and accurate, which WTOP
often is not.

All opinions appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom Fitzpatrick

We have a 7 series Garmin ( I think the 760). It has traffic/weather,
bluetooth for hands free phone, an micro SD slot for
music (it transmits to a blank FM channel), and a host of other features.

It's WAY better than our built in GPS's in our cars (a Lexus and a Camry).
In fact, it's pretty much a standard item
in our luggage whenever we go on trips and are renting a car.  I also like
the display better than the Tom Tom 130 I just
received.  It's stone cold reliable and pretty damn accurate.

Lifetime map updates are $128.  Traffic/weather subscription is separate
(something like $20 a year).  Quite frankly,
I wouldn't subscribe to traffic/weather. The weather can be heard off WTOP
and traffic changes so rapidly that the
service can't keep up with it. The only things that traffic is good for is
extended accidents or contruction...both of
which you'll hear on the radio or already know.

If you're listening to sat radio or your ipod, you wouldn't hear
anything about local traffic incidents or construction.  I don't know
how the stand alone units work, but my wife's car has real time
traffic and it works well.  Coupled with the nav, it alerts you to
incidents and provides suggested routes to avoid them.

The stand alone units, at least for Garmin are fed off of MSN. Nuff
said on THAT. Tom Tom has their own service
and I haven't tried it but I understand it's free if you buy their
specialized charging plug.

I have Garmin Nuvi. I use it in the car and on the bike (have a ram mount that's waterproof)have had no problems and it's not that expensive. I also have XM radio (well Sirius/XM) they used to have a really good traffic channel on it for the Wash DC/Metro area. That was updated really quickly. Saved me a lot of time then but now they've lumped Baltimore into it too and now it's not so good.

Doesn't the Tom Tom give updates on the traffic too. That would be a option. Check them out on Amazon.com they usually have really good customer reviews on stuff.

BTW I on the ride home on the bike yesterday I saw so many wannabe Lance Armstrong's out and about. They would ride 3-4 wide through the park and ignore the rest of the traffic. I actually had a couple of bikes riding the double yellow into oncoming traffice. Share the road huh. My middle finger is tired. Had to vent.

[Dave]  Actually Iphone maps & crackberry have apps with nav. That show
traffic on interstates..  Fairly accurately, but I'm not sure about
"autorouting" around.  I'm not real keen on Garmin's "detour" logic.  In
fact, on my zumo sometimes it plain doesn't work.  I haven't found a way to
"detour" in advance on a route you launch on the unit either.  I'm otherwise
happy with it.

[Dave]  I give them 2 beeps, downshift & throttle.  If they're too stupid to
get out of the way, tough cookies.  They want to ride multi-abreast, I'm
splitting between them.  We get them on the GW Pkway obstructing traffic
quite a bit.  They can be ticketed (obstructing) IF they're observed by a
cop, but they're never around.

I share your frustration, but just split between them leaving them in your
asphalt ripping wake.

I treat them like any other two wheeler...  they get my full courtesy
until they fail to return it, at which point they're an obstacle and
dealt with as such.

just think of them as quicker than normal harleys.

Yeah, we have MSN Traffic on our Garmin Nuvi and it's pathetic. Google
Maps on my iPhone has very good traffic info -- I use it every day.
