Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 kernal 2.6.28-15-genericI am now able to fax out successfully after receiving help here (http://www.nabble.com/ScanModem-report-to25518870.html). Thank you very much for your support.
A couple of issues remain: 1) When I first launch Efax-gtk and try to send a fax, I get an error message - "unrecoverable error". I then open terminal and execute $ sudo agrsm-test, after which I can send a fax. Is this the required first step to using efax-gtk, or am I missing something in the setup of efax-gtk? 2) I have not been able to receive a fax. Here are the messages following a few of my attempts: efax-0.9a: 12:21:27 waiting for activity efax-0.9a: 12:22:20 activity detected efax-0.9a: 12:22:33 fax call answered efax-0.9a: 12:23:03 Warning: 577 reception errors efax-0.9a: 12:23:04 Warning: reception errors efax-0.9a: 12:22:33 remote ID -> 16103884447 efax-0.9a: 12:22:33 session 98lpi 14.4kbps 8.5"/215mm any 1D - Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 kenal 2.6.28-15-genericA4,
You needn't run my agrsm-test, once it has been shown to be effective. Rather it should suffice to: $ sudo modprobe agrserial which will suffice to load agrmodem+agrserial and dynamically create the port, with the symbolic to it: /dev/ttySAGR --> /dev/ttyAGS3 This provides the access to the modem, and all else is an efax issue, better addressed to the efax list. Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 kenal 2.6.28-15-genericMarvin:
Chris solved my problems w/ receiving faxes and using the socket for sending. I now have a fully functional fax modem. Thanks for all your help. Along this journey I remember a website for reporting the status of modem operation on Ubuntu/Linux, but I can't find it now. Where should I record my modem status? Bill Lowther

Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 kenal 2.6.28-15-genericBill,
You should write up your efax solution clearly enough so that others will be able to follow it as a guide. Send it to both this List and http://old.nabble.com/, with say a title like: Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipsest supported vt agrsm06pci_2.1.80~20090825_i386.deb Thus it will be searchable in both Archives. Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 &10.4, Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipset supportedMarvin:
Sorry for the tardy response. I just completed an upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04, and also updated the files for my modem and fax. This process was not as difficult this time as it was the first time, but it did highlight a need for me to document (for future upgrades) the steps that I took to do so. Perhaps this will help someone else, too. Some background: Last year (2009) I bought a new eMachine computer that had Windows Vista installed. Included was a soft modem, but no fax program. I subsequently downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 as my primary OS, with Vista on a separate partition. With the help of this forum I was able to download the necessary files and programs to make a fully functional fax. In September of 2010 I upgraded Ubuntu along with the modem files and the latest version of efax-gtk. [EDIT 9/28/2010, 10/17/10] What follows is my latest procedure to upgrade my fax & modem files (in Ubuntu); it should suffice for an initial install as well --- I.Run scanModem to obtain information about the chipset of the modem. A.Go to http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ (or http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/index.html#scanmodem) and proceed down page to “So, what next,....? B.Click on “most recent version” of “scanModem”. Get window for opening the .gz, select Archive Mgr/OK. This places the .gz into /tmp folder. C.In Terminal, run [EDIT 10/13/10 - make sure proper case is used in file names below; lower case "m" was not recognized]: 1.sudo gunzip /tmp/scanModem.gz to unzip the file. 2.sudo chmod +x /tmp/scanModem to make it executable. 3.sudo /tmp/scanModem to run the utility program. This creates a folder “Modem” containing all the output files of the program. II.In scanModem output file ModemData.txt, A.“firmware information” showed that the “communication controller” is “Agere Systems Lucent V.92 Data/Fax Modem” with a chipset ID of 11c1:0620. B.Under “Predictive diagnostics”, the support type needed is shown to be “agrsm”. C.It also indicates that the following 2 drivers are available at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040 1.agrsmo6pci-2.1.80_20100106_i386.deb (check column for "Last Modified") 2.agrsm-tools_0.0.1_all.deb D.In Ubuntu's Synaptic Package Manager, search for these 2 “agrsm” files. 1.If this is an update, mark for "complete removal", and remove older versions. Check /tmp folder and delete remaining associated files. 2.Close Synaptic Package Manager. 3.Left click on new file (C, above), and Save to /tmp folder. 4. In /tmp folder, double click on file, then select Install Package in the GDebi package installer window. 5.Click on "Terminal" carrot to observe progress. 6.In terminal, run "$ ls /lib/modules/2.6.32-25-generic/updates/dkms/" to confirm presence of agrmodem.ko and agrserial.ko files. III.Install the latest version of the wvdial modem utility program. A.Check name of version currently in /tmp folder. B.The wvdial program can be found at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages (near bottom of list). 1.If wvdial version here is an update, go to Synaptic Package Manager and mark for "complete removal" of older version. 2.Left click new version and Save to /tmp. 3.Right click and "Extract here". 4.This will create a subfolder called wvdial_lucid_i386 (or latest version) with 4 files in it. 5.One file will be wvdial_1.60.3_i386.deb (or latest version). 6.Go to Synaptic Package Manager and search “All” for this. 7.Mark and install this new version. This will install all necessary files for the utility. IV.In Terminal: A.run sudo modprobe agrserial B.run sudo agrsm-test C.The later will find the wvdial utility, run it, and have an output .txt file. D.Compare against previous test outputs to see if anything looks strange. V.For fax (efax-gtk) version updates: A.Go to http://efax-gtk.sourceforge.net/ and look for precompiled packages to download. B.If there is an update, go to Applications/Office/Efax-gtk/settings and copy/print out the existing settings. C.Then go to Synaptic Mgr and remove the current version before downloading the new. D.In Sep. 2010, I downloaded v3.2.3-2 from the above url. 1.Click on the link, which took me to http://packages.debian.org/unstable/comm/efax-gtk. 2.Here I clicked on “squeeze” at the top, which took me to http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/efax-gtk. 3.Here, I clicked on Architecture/ i386 from a table on that page. 4.This took me to http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/i386/efax-gtk/download, 5.where I clicked on ftp.us.debian.org/debian in a list under North America. 6.Save this file under /Bill. 7.Then double click to install. 8.When install is completed, run “sudo agrsm-test”. VI.Prior to running Efax-gtk, A.shutdown email and Internet (to avoid possible disruptions), B.then run “sudo modprobe agrserial” in terminal, C.then launch Efax-gtk. Works great. Bill

Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 &10.4, Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipset supportedBill,
Sorry to ask, but did you get the file: > Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipsest supported vt > agrsm06pci_2.1.80~20090825_i386.deb You declare that you are using: > In output file Agrsm.txt, the “current confirmed support is with the > agrsm-20090418.tar.gz at > http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040”. This is an older version of the driver. Which BTW, I also have an 11c11:0620 and a 11c11:0630 modem and I use the newer agrsm06pci_2.1.80-20100106.tar.gz from Here's part of scanModem output: Only plain text email is forwarded by the Discuss@... Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 &10.4, Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipset supportedBill,
That version you got is *older* than the version suggested by Marv and it is older than the one that exists now. Here's what scanModem points out: That same version of the driver, I remember I could not get to work, but when newer versions came out, they worked and I am using one with 11c1:0630 and a similar 11c1:0620 modem. Here's output so you can see. The AgereSystems/LSI agrsm code supports compiling of a agrmodem + agrserial driver pair. There are a few different chipsets which use this driver pair, but they use different code resources: Chipsets KV* PackageNames (most current as of November 2009) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11c1:048c and 11c1:048f 2.6.29 agrsm048pci-2.1.60_20100108_i386.deb or agrsm048pci-2.1.60_20100108.tar.gz 11c1:0620 2.6.31 agrsm06pci-2.1.80_20100106_i386.deb or agrsm06pci-2.1.80~20100106.tar.gz !! 11c11040 (on HDA audio cards) 2.6.31 agrsm-11c11040_20091225_i386.deb or agrsm-11c11040-2.1.80~20091225.tar.bz2 !! All available at: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040/ Additionally there are; automation & testing agrsm-tools_0.0.1_all.deb or agrsm-tools-0.0.1-2.noarch.rpm General background agrsm_howto.txt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * KV == latest kernel release with a reported success !! Latest update with major credit to Nikolay Zhuravlev But see conflict issue: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-nineth/msg02753.html For the 11c11040 chip with kernels 2.6.31 and later a change in a modules loading settingmay be necessary. Within the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (or equivalent for your Distro), change the phrase: options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 to: options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 or the agrsm drivers will not function. For Ubuntu related systems this can be done with: $ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Report from Bjorn Wielens: Please note- trying to load the modules on a OpenSuSE 11.2 system gives an error about the module_version symbol. Using: # modprobe --force agrmodem # modprobe --force agrserial is necessary to load the drivers, and does not appear to cause ill effects. All of the above packages are dkms competent. This means that if your Linux distros dkms package is previously installed, if provides for future updates matching forthcoming kernels. -------------- end Agere Systems section ------------------- Here summarized in case: 11c1:0620 2.6.31 agrsm06pci-2.1.80_20100106_i386.deb or agrsm06pci-2.1.80~20100106.tar.gz !! This would be for 2.6.31 and newer kernels :) Regards, Antonio On 9/14/10, A4Skyhawk <624WTL@...> wrote: > > Antonio: > Yes, I downloaded the most current version, which was > agrsm-20090418.tar.gz > > Bill > > > Antonio Olivares-2 wrote: >> >> Bill, >> >> Sorry to ask, but did you get the file: >> >>> Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipsest supported vt >>> agrsm06pci_2.1.80~20090825_i386.deb >> >> You declare that you are using: >> >>> In output file Agrsm.txt, the “current confirmed support is with the >>> agrsm-20090418.tar.gz at >>> http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040”. >> >> This is an older version of the driver. Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 &10.4, Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipset supportedAntonio:
My apologies, I copied/pasted the wrong file name in my previous post. What I downloaded was the most current shown in the list, which was agrsm06pci-2.1.80_20100106_i386.deb Thank you checking on me. Kind regards, Bill

Re: Bill Lowther, USA, Ubuntu 9.04 &10.4, Efax with Agere 11c1:0620 chipset supportedBill,
Thanks for the report on the fax setup for the 11c1:0620 chipset. Once the agrsm-tools package has been installed, agrmodem + agrserial and ports are all created by: $ sudo modprobe agrserial This should be manually done on every bootup. Again runing $ sudo agrsm-test should not be necessary, unless some failure arises.
