Hello Juan,

Some necessary background research may be necessary in order to adequately negate the effects of fragmentation. The greatest consequences of fragmentation are geographic isolation, reduced population size and restricted gene flow; the results of which are usually lowered genetic diversity and genetic drift which may lead to genetic erosion. Negating these effects using agroforestry is one way to solve this problem.

However some important background information may be necessary. Is the fragmented species in question a natural inbreeder or out breeder? What is the pollination syndrome of the species? What is the extent of pollen and seed dispersal? Are the other plants in the agroforestry system creating a suitable habitat to facilitate pollinators between fragments. What is the current state of genetic diversity and divergence present in the patches? Would increasing population size by introduction of new individuals/seeds be more effective instead of trying to bridge populations?

I believe that answering some of these questions are important. It may not make a lot of sense bridging two fragments if they contain and maintain the same level of diversity or use an agroforestry system that may be unfriendly to your pollinator(s).

Regards,

Nigel
> Hi
>
> Does anyone know how to approch a resarch study on how agroforestry
> could stop habitat fragmentation? or, How agrofrestry corridors could be
> use to connect fragmented patches? Any information would be helpful!!!

Hello Juan,

>From a spatial point of view, look at the fragstats software and r.le
programs.

You could design the corridors created by your interventions at the
landscape (that is create an imaginary GIS dataset with your agroforestry
regime).
Then run the landscape homogeneity tests for the current, and the future
landscape. The index values could provide an indicator of the effect of your
interventions.

Hope this helps,

Hello Juan,

>From a spatial point of view, look at the fragstats software and r.le programs.

You could design the corridors created by your interventions at the landscape (that is create an imaginary GIS dataset with your agroforestry regime).
Then run the landscape homogeneity tests for the current, and the future landscape. The index values could provide an indicator of the effect of your interventions.

Hope this helps,

my question:

could . . . walnut trees be inoculated to produce truffles?

we have a walnut orchard in n. CA

could truffles possibly grow among the roots?

the best way to test soil for acid or alkali ph?

we would like to explore the possibilities of growing truffles

wondering if n.CA might be as good a location as Oregon

are you available for consultation re all these things?

or is this the wrong department/forum in which to ask these questions?

thank you for your web site & information re truffles.

We count on program committee members to submit papers (hopefully
attend), help reviewing 2-3 papers, recommending new program committee
members, suggesting topics improvements, and disseminating the Call for
Papers.

Please reply to the invitation to petre@... with

- your most up to date affiliation
and
- 1-2 conferences, and your topics of interest, e.g.,
BIOINFO/Chemoinformatics, BIODIV/Bioinvasion

We would like to post the committee as soon as possible and start
distributing the Call for Papers.

Thanks for your potential help,

Gerald I agree with your observations BUT then again if it is his money, it
is his problem. However, if he is using country from the State you should
inform the appropriate agencies of your concern.

The university has a lab in Georgia we clone with but bioengineer is another
issue completely.

We spend a lot of time trying to correct the misconceptions about paulownia.
Like teak was the panacea twenty years ago, paulownia is rapidly falling
into that category.

Gerald, ENOCIS has an investors web site www.panampro.com for people
interested in investing in managed paulownia forests. The numbers therein,
are by third parties and not the university so it adds credibility to its
content.

As a swag, in ten years one can earn approximately $115,000 USD gross from
investing $10,000 USD in one hectare of paulownia, in the tropics, not
hundreds of thousands as is purported on some pages.
Asunto: Re: Paulownia Empress Splendor in Canada
Importancia: Alta

I went to Smale's web site too. But I wonder about his figures, for
example: "Grains produce approximately 10 tonnes of grain per acre. Empress
SplendorT is capable of producing up to 70 tonnes of cellulose per acre."

Wheat yields in Ontario average about 65-70 bu/acre; with wheat @60lb./bu,
that works out to about 4,000 lb./acre, or 2 tons. So maybe I have to
divide his 70 tons of Paulownia by 5 too?

I'm also wondering about his description of Empress Splendor as a
"bioengineered" plant. Is he just referring to the plant as being
propagated by tissue culture, or has it been genetically altered; if so,
what specifically did the breeder do to it? I can't find any information on
the genetic history.

Hey Steve,

Sorry to come at you through this corridor, but I have a question for you concerning remote sensing. Have you heard of an application of remote sensing to examine the spectral signature of plants to detect radioactivity that has been taken up into the plant tissue? Essentially, I'm thinking about an indirect measure of radioactivity. One specific nuclide is Sr-90, and so Sr metal detection in leaf tissue might be the specific condition to look for. Have you heard of an application like this?

Mike and Lorri you might go to the internet and read an article "Comparative
Analysis of Teak vs Paulownia" That will give you some insight into
paulownia. Like anything, paulownia has specific uses. For most people it is
either ascetic or commercial. They either want shade to decorate their
garden or to make money.

In many places paulownia is considered a pernicious weed because it is
difficult to kill once established. However to others it is a God send
because it offers alternate sources of income relatively quickly to peoples
of extreme poverty.

For more information on paulownia you might read www.paulownianow.org and
for information on investing in paulownia in Panama you can go to
www.panampro.com which will give you a balanced impartial perspective from
which you can draw your own conclusions.
> Bruce Decker

Hi Bruce.

I closed the website after contracting MRSA in 2006. Wasn't sure if
bacterium could be spread at that time, so erred on the save side.

Have now been "cured" of MRSA, and retired from my full-time job at
The Oregonian Publishing Company.

While I would still consider truffle inoculation, I'm not sure that
your area would be appropriate. Truffles in Oregon are typically found
under 1,000 feet elevation, mostly with Douglas fir. Much of Idaho
(all of it?) is higher. Alexander Smith made many collections of
truffles in Idaho, but I'm not sure that any of the truffles I have
cultivated (except the Rhizopogons) have been reported from Idaho.

I appreciate your interest, but suspect any inoculation would not be
successful unless you were under 1,000 feet in elevation.

Announcement postdoctoral position on modelling phenotypic plasticity

A 24 months post-doctoral position is available starting end of 2008 at
the Research Unit on Improvement, Genetics and Physiology of Forest
Trees (http://www.orleans.inra.fr/les_unites/ur_agpf) at INRA Orleans
(France).

This project is to gain insight through mathematical simulation on how
phenotypic plasticity responds to different causal genetic mechanisms
subjected to environmental shifts and evolutionary forces. This will
involve several successive objectives: a) to explore theoretically the
underlying mechanisms responsible of the expression of given levels of
phenotypic plasticity, b) to compare the constraints to the evolutionary
progress that are implicit to each of these identified mechanisms, c) to
evaluate the adequacy of population based response curves as measures of
individual plasticity under the different mechanisms. These mechanisms
will be studied by means of allelic models structured into gene
networks. Two complementary modelling approaches will be used, a
“model-to-result” approach and an “expectation-to-model” approach. The
fulfilment of objective (c) will allow a first validation over results
from dendrochronological records, where families and individuals were
simultaneously evaluated for temporal and spatial phenotypic plasticities.

The position is funded by a grant from the French Ministry of Research.
More details about the announcement are given at INRA’s institutional
website
(http://www.international.inra.fr/join_us/positions/postdoctoral_positions/annual_campaign_for_postdocs/research_projects_2008)

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants MUST have a Ph.D. degree by the time of
appointment, along with experience in quantitative and population
genetics and development of mathematical models, and training and/or
experience in one programming language (FORTRAN, C++, etc). An interest
in plant and/or forest tree improvement is also highly desirable.

APPLICATION: Application forms will be provided upon request at one of
the addresses below (or downloaded from previous INRA’s website). Send
fulfilled forms as soon as possible to

leopoldo.sanchez@...,
